Air temperature and rain days are national met service September normals via the WMO World Weather Information Service. Montenegro’s reading is the Podgorica station, which runs about a degree warmer than the Tivat and Budva coast. Albania has no station in that dataset, so the Albanian Riviera row uses Corfu’s normals: Saranda sits roughly 30 km across the strait. “Price vs August” is a directional judgement based on when each destination’s main source markets go back to school, not a measured price index.

1. Rhodes, Greece: the best all-round September island
Rhodes combines the second-hottest sea in this table with 1.5 rain days, which is the closest thing to a weather guarantee Europe offers. The old town works in 28 °C in a way it simply does not in August.

2. Paphos, Cyprus: the driest month you can book
Paphos averages 29.4 °C days, 5.8 mm of rain and 1.1 rain days in September. Cyprus’s swimming season runs later than anywhere else in the European Union, and the archaeological park is bearable again once the August heat breaks.

3. Antalya and Bodrum, Turkey: the warmest water in Europe
Antalya’s September sea averages about 28.6 °C, warmer than the Mediterranean gets anywhere else, and the Turkish State Meteorological Service puts the daytime normal at 30.9 °C with 1.8 rain days.

4. Crete, Greece: the island that stays open longest
Crete’s size is the point. Heraklion averages 26.4 °C with 2.4 rain days, and the island keeps ferries, buses and hotels running long after smaller islands wind down.

5. Mallorca, Spain: the shortest flight to a warm sea
Palma drops from a 31.3 °C August normal to 27.9 °C in September while the sea holds around 26.7 °C. From Frankfurt it is a two-hour flight, which makes a long weekend genuinely worth it.
The catch: September is the wettest month Mallorca has seen all year at 50 mm, and autumn storms arrive fast when they arrive. Pack one waterproof layer and stop worrying about it.
6. Sardinia, Italy: clear water, empty sand
Cagliari averages 27.4 °C with 4.3 rain days, and the beaches that were shoulder-to-shoulder in August are close to empty by the second week. The water is the clearest in the western Mediterranean.

7. Sicily, Italy: the culture trip with a swim attached
Palermo averages 27.5 °C in September, down from 30.5 °C in August, with a sea around 26.1 °C. It is the rare destination where the sightseeing and the beach both work in the same week.
The catch: rain days climb from August’s near-zero to 5.4, usually as short, heavy afternoon storms rather than grey days. Plan the indoor half of the day for the afternoon.
8. Costa del Sol and Andalusia, Spain: the least reliable water here
Málaga is warm and dry in September, at 28.2 °C with 3.2 rain days, and the cities inland finally become walkable again.
The catch is the sea, and it is a real one. 10. Corfu, Greece: the value pick with an honest weather problem
Corfu is the cheapest of the big Greek islands in September and still averages 27.6 °C with a sea around 25.5 °C.

Faro averages 26.7 °C with only 3.0 rain days, and the light in late September is the best of the year. Prices fall hard once the Portuguese and Spanish school years restart.

Split averages 25.1 °C in September, down from 29.5 °C, and Dubrovnik 25.4 °C. The island ferries are still running and the old towns are walkable again by mid-month.

Montenegro’s September sea sits around 25.2 °C, warmer than Split’s, and the Bay of Kotor is a genuine alternative to Dalmatia at lower cost.

14. Albanian Riviera: the cheapest warm sea in Europe
Saranda, Himara and Dhërmi sit on the same strait as Corfu, with the same climate and roughly half the prices. September is when the domestic crowd goes home and the coast belongs to you.

Here is the part most people get wrong. The sea lags the sun by weeks, so September water is warmer than June water at every eastern Mediterranean spot we checked: Corfu, Antalya, Naples and Paphos all sat in the 22 to 25 °C band in June 2026 and are in the 25 to 29 °C band in September.
How much cheaper is September than August?
Cheaper, but the discount arrives in two waves, and which wave you catch depends on where the resort’s guests come from. There is no single percentage, so do not trust anyone who quotes one.
The structural facts behind it:

Four long-haul options that genuinely work this month, and one that mostly does not.

- Japan, with caution. Tokyo averages 27.5 °C but 224.9 mm of rain over 11 days in September, the wettest month of its year, and typhoon season is at full strength. The reward is Hokkaido: Daisetsuzan National Park is the first place in Japan to turn colour, with the earliest red appearing around mid-September.
- Cape Town, South Africa. Early spring, at 19.2 °C by day and 40 mm of rain over 10.4 days. Not a beach month, but the whale-watching season is running and prices sit well below December.
- New England, only from late September. Vermont’s tourism office reports colour starting in mid-September in the Northeast Kingdom, with peak in that northern region usually late September into early October. Anywhere further south is an October trip.
What can go wrong in September, and what to do
The Atlantic hurricane season peaks on 10 September. The US National Hurricane Center puts the climatological peak on that exact date, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Typhoons across Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991 to 2020 normals give September five typhoons formed, 3.3 approaching Japan and 1.0 making landfall. A single storm can close Shinkansen lines and airports for a day, so leave slack around international connections.
Monsoon tails in South and Southeast Asia. The India Meteorological Department’s normal withdrawal of the southwest monsoon begins on 17 September and completes on 15 October, so Kerala and the west coast are still wet. Phuket has its wettest month of the year in September at 386.5 mm over 22.8 days, while Thailand’s Gulf islands sit on the opposite cycle and are drier.
First snow in the Alps. Early cold snaps can put snow on high passes in September and close them for a day or two. If your trip includes an Alpine driving route, check the pass status the morning you travel rather than assuming summer conditions.
Atlantic swell on the Algarve and Madeira. The same Atlantic that keeps the water at about 20.7 °C also brings the first autumn swells. Great if you surf, less good if you wanted a flat sea for children.
