October is the month people get wrong. The air temperature still looks like summer on most Mediterranean forecasts, so travellers book the Algarve or the Costa del Sol expecting to swim, then find the Atlantic at 20 °C and a wind off the water.

How we built this ranking
This is a data comparison, not a review. We did not visit these places in October 2026 and we do not claim to have.
- Air temperature is the average daily maximum for October from each country’s own national meteorological service, published through the WMO World Weather Information Service, or from that service’s own 1991–2020 normals where we could read them directly (Portugal’s IPMA, Turkey’s MGM, the US National Weather Service).
- Sea temperature is the October mean of NOAA’s OISST v2 high-resolution 1991–2020 daily sea surface temperature climatology, read at a point in open water off each destination. We calculated these values ourselves from NOAA’s published dataset on 16 August 2026.
- Rainy days come from the same national met-service normals. Each service uses its own threshold (from 0.01 mm in Egypt to 1 mm in Japan and Thailand), so read that column as a wet-or-dry ranking rather than an exact count.
- Flight times are typical scheduled nonstop block times from London on current airline timetables, rounded to five minutes. Frankfurt is broadly similar for the Mediterranean and about 30 minutes shorter to Egypt and Turkey.
- Price pressure is our structural judgement based on when each destination’s high season actually runs, not a measured fare. Winter-sun islands soften less in October than pure summer beach destinations do.
Climate normals are 30-year averages, not forecasts. A single October can run several degrees either side of them.

1. Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt
Nothing else within a five-hour flight of London offers water this warm this late, and the fringing reef along this coast is close enough to shore that snorkelling rarely needs a boat.

2. Hurghada, Egypt
Hurghada has the better airport links from mainland Europe and a wider spread of family resorts, and it is the cheaper of the two Red Sea options in most October weeks.

Cyprus keeps the warmest sea in the Mediterranean into late autumn and, unusually for October, stays genuinely dry with under four rainy days on the coast.
The catch is that the island’s high season does not really end, so hotel rates soften less here than in Greece. Larnaca is the better base for a first trip; Paphos suits walkers and anyone who wants the quieter end.
4. Antalya, Turkey
Antalya is the value pick of the whole list: an eastern Mediterranean sea temperature matched only by Cyprus, on a coast whose resort pricing falls hard once the summer peak ends.

5. Rhodes, Greece
Rhodes holds its sea temperature better than any other Greek island this far into autumn, and the medieval old town is genuinely more pleasant without August’s crowds and heat.

6. Tenerife, Canary Islands
Tenerife is the safety net. The south of the island is the driest, sunniest part and its winter season is only just beginning in October, so nothing is closing down around you.
The catch is that Tenerife has two climates: the north around Puerto de la Cruz is greener, cloudier and several degrees cooler than Costa Adeje in the south. 7. Malta
Malta gives you the shortest flight on this list to water still above 23 °C, plus Valletta, Mdina and the Hypogeum when you have had enough of the sea.
The catch is rain: Malta records the highest October rainy-day count of the 14, because the autumn rains arrive here before they arrive anywhere else in the central Mediterranean. They tend to come as short heavy bursts rather than grey days.
8. Madeira
Madeira is the October choice for people who want to walk rather than lie down. The levada paths are at their best when it is 25 °C rather than 30, and the island is subtropical rather than seasonal.

9. Heraklion, Crete
Crete is the largest Greek island and the one that still functions normally in October, with a sea that holds just above the comfortable threshold and a fraction of the August traffic.

10. Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Lanzarote is the driest of the Atlantic islands here, with four rainy days in an average October, and its sheltered south-coast bays around Playa Blanca stay swimmable when the swell picks up elsewhere.
The catch is wind. The island is exposed, and north-coast beaches can be uncomfortable on a breezy day even when the sun is out. Papagayo and the Playa Blanca side are the reliable ones.
11. Catania, Sicily
October is arguably Sicily’s best month: harvest produce in the markets, Etna walkable without the summer heat haze, and a sea that is still warm enough for a swim between sightseeing days.

The Algarve is the cheapest short flight on this list and one of the biggest August-to-October price drops in Europe, with warm, walkable days and quiet beaches.
The catch is the one that catches everyone: the Atlantic here is around 20.5 °C in October, which is bracing rather than pleasant for most swimmers. Come for the cliffs, the Ria Formosa lagoon and the food, not the swimming. Our Algarve guide covers the coastal walks.
13. Málaga and the Costa del Sol
Málaga is the best October city on the list: the Picasso and Carmen Thyssen museums, a working port promenade, and the Andalusian interior of Granada, Córdoba and Ronda inside a day trip.
The catch is the sea. The water off Málaga is the coolest of all 14 destinations in October, cooler even than the Algarve, so treat the Costa del Sol as a city-and-culture trip rather than a swimming one.
14. Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech gives you 28.5 °C and four rainy days without needing a coast at all, and October is when the Atlas foothills become comfortable for a day trip rather than punishing.
The catch is honest: there is no sea, and the nearest Atlantic coast at Essaouira and Agadir sits around 20 °C, the same problem as the Algarve. Our Marrakech guide covers the medina and the day trips.
Where is it still warm enough to swim in October?
Sea temperatures above about 22 °C feel comfortable for most swimmers without a wetsuit. Below 20 °C most people will get in, gasp, and get out.
Grouped by that threshold, from the NOAA 1991–2020 October climatology:
- Bathwater (27 °C and above): the Red Sea at Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, the Maldives, Thailand’s Andaman coast, and the Gulf off Dubai (31.1 °C, the warmest sea in this whole article).
- Comfortably warm (24–25 °C): Larnaca and Paphos, Antalya, Rhodes.
- Warm enough (22.5–24 °C): Tenerife, Malta, Madeira, Crete, Lanzarote, Sicily, Bali.
- Bracing (19–21 °C): the Algarve, the Costa del Sol, and Morocco’s Atlantic coast at Agadir and Essaouira.
That last band is the trap. The Algarve and the Costa del Sol have the warmest October land temperatures of any short-haul destination relative to flight time, and the coolest water. If swimming is the point of the trip, spend the extra 90 minutes in the air and go east.
How much cheaper is October than August?
Eurostat publishes a harmonised monthly price index for the whole EU, which lets us answer this without guessing. Here is October measured against the same year’s August peak.

Three things that table does not say out loud:
- September is cheaper than October for flights. EU air fares in September ran 16.9% below August in 2024 and 18.8% below in 2025, a much bigger drop than October’s. October rebounds because half term and Toussaint pull demand back. If your dates are free, see where to go in September .
- The demand collapse is far bigger than the price fall. Eurostat counted 511.5 million nights spent in EU tourist accommodation in August 2025 and 238.6 million in October 2025. Occupancy roughly halves, but published rates only fall by single digits, because hotels would rather run empty than reset their rate card.
- This is an EU-wide average. A specific route in a specific week can move far more than 11%, in either direction.

October school holidays and long weekends 2026
If you can travel in the first two weeks of October you will pay less almost everywhere in Europe. These are the windows that push prices back up, verified against each country’s official calendar.

The pinch point is obvious once it is written down: from 17 October the French, Dutch, British and several German markets are all off at once. The first two weeks of October are the cheap ones.
Which October trip fits you?
- Families tied to half term (26–30 October): Tenerife or Lanzarote. Their season is starting rather than ending, so nothing closes around you and the weather risk is the lowest on this list.
- Couples who want to actually swim: Cyprus or Antalya. The warmest Mediterranean water, and both are quiet by late October.
- The tightest budget: Faro or Málaga, on the shortest and cheapest flights, accepting that this is a walking-and-eating trip rather than a swimming one.
- A city break with heat: Marrakech, or Málaga as a base for Granada and Córdoba.
- Long-haul, with eyes open: the Maldives and Bali are both in a wetter part of their year. Dubai is dependable but expensive as its season starts, and New York is a jacket-and-foliage trip, not a beach one.

October is an awkward month across most of Asia, and the honest framing matters more than the temperature.

What can go wrong in October, and what to do
The 25 October cliff. The airline winter timetable for 2026/27 starts on Sunday 25 October and runs to 27 March 2027, and EU clocks go back the same night. Seasonal summer routes stop, frequencies drop, and sunset moves an hour earlier. If you are flying in the last week of the month, confirm your route still operates in the winter schedule rather than assuming the summer timetable holds.
Resorts closing around you. Greek islands, and smaller Turkish and Italian resort towns, begin shutting from mid-October. Big islands (Crete, Rhodes, Tenerife, Sicily, Malta) and cities carry on normally. Small islands and single-resort bays do not.
Atlantic swell in the Canaries and Madeira. The first serious north Atlantic swells of the season arrive in October. South-facing beaches stay usable; exposed north and west coasts get red flags. Check the flag before you swim, every time.
Egypt and Turkey heat variance. Early October in Sharm, Hurghada and Antalya can still hit the mid-30s, and the last week can be 8–10 degrees cooler. The 30-year normals in the table are the middle of a wide range, not a guarantee.
Caribbean hurricane risk. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic hurricane season as 1 June to 30 November, with the climatological peak on 10 September and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Rain that is not on the forecast. Autumn Mediterranean rain arrives as short violent bursts rather than all-day drizzle. A 40% chance of rain in Malta in October usually means one dramatic hour, not a washout.

Cyprus, Antalya in Turkey and the Canary Islands are the warmest reliable options, with average daily highs of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius. Greek islands such as Rhodes and Crete, plus Malta, Sicily and Madeira, sit between 23 and 25 degrees. Southern Spain and the Algarve stay warm on land, but their Atlantic water is much cooler.
Where can you swim in the sea in October?
Sea temperatures above about 22 degrees Celsius feel comfortable for most swimmers. Using NOAA sea surface temperature normals for 1991 to 2020, October averages around 28 degrees in the Red Sea, 25 off Cyprus and Antalya, 24 around Rhodes, and 23 in Tenerife, Malta and Sicily. The Algarve and the Costa del Sol drop to 20 or below.
Is October a cheap month to travel?
Yes, compared with August. Eurostat consumer price data for the EU shows October air fares running about 11 to 12 percent below August in both 2024 and 2025, accommodation about 8 percent below, and package holidays about 10 percent below. September is cheaper still for flights, because October picks up school-holiday demand.
Where is hot in October outside Europe?
Dubai still averages around 35 degrees Celsius with sea temperatures near 31, and Egypt’s Red Sea resorts sit around 31 to 32 degrees on land. When is the October half term and autumn school holiday in 2026?
Most schools in England and Wales take the autumn half term from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026, while Scotland’s October break usually falls a fortnight earlier. France runs Toussaint from 17 October to 2 November for all zones, the Netherlands starts on 10 or 17 October by region, and Germany staggers Herbstferien between 5 October and 6 November by state.
Pick a month, then pick a destination
The month is the decision that costs the most money, so make it first. If your dates are still open, September is cheaper for flights and October is warmer for swimming, and by November the short-haul options narrow to the Canary Islands, the Red Sea and long-haul winter sun.
Then let the sea temperature choose the destination, and the calendar choose the week.
