Where to go in May 2027, before summer takes over

May is the last month of the year when the southern Mediterranean is warm and the calendar is still on your side. From the end of May the school holidays start stacking up; July and August bring all of them.

The catch is that “the Mediterranean” is not one climate in May. The southern and eastern coasts are already in summer. The Adriatic is still in spring. Pick the wrong one and you get a wet week on a coastline you booked for the beach.

DHMZ’s station pages publish the mean temperature and the count of days above 25 °C, not a mean daily maximum, so the two Croatian rows compare on the mean column and on rainfall.

Three numbers in that table carry the decision.

Seville’s 27.2 °C. Inland Andalusia is already hot in May, and it is the one place in the table where the risk is too much heat rather than too little. For Seville, May is the comfortable month, not the early one.

Dubrovnik’s 66.7 mm. That is more than four times the rain Athens gets in May, across about 10 rainy days against about 6. The Croatian coast is lovely in May for walls, islands and old towns. It is not reliable beach weather yet.

Lisbon against Faro. The two are 0.4 °C apart on the daily maximum and more than 30 mm apart on rain: Lisbon 57.8 mm, Faro 26.2 mm. IPMA records 9.5 days above 25 °C in Faro in May. If Portugal is the plan and the beach is the point, go south.

Where the sea is warm enough in May

Air temperature is the easy half. The sea decides whether May is a swimming trip.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes a monthly sea-water average for each of Turkey’s seas, running from 1970 to 2025:

Two things follow from those rows.

  • May is the crossover month. The Mediterranean off Turkey goes from 18.1 °C to 20.8 °C, which is the difference between a quick dip and a proper swim for most people.
  • The Aegean runs about two degrees behind. At 18.8 °C in May, Bodrum and the eastern Aegean islands are bracing rather than comfortable. The Greek Cyclades and Santorini sit in the same sea.

MGM’s own breakdown shows the recent years running warmer than the long-run figure: its annual Mediterranean average for 2014-2025 is 22.3 °C, against 21.5 °C for the whole 1970-2025 series. Treat the May numbers above as a floor, not a ceiling.

The other met services used on this page publish air normals on the pages we checked, not sea normals, so the Spanish, Greek and Croatian coasts have no row here. Late May beats early May on both Turkish seas, which warm by roughly three degrees a month through spring.

The Mediterranean in May, country by country

Turkey: the warmest sea, the best case for a beach week

Antalya combines the warmest air in the eastern table, 25.7 °C, with the warmest sea, 20.8 °C, and 33.3 mm of rain across about five rainy days, per MGM. MGM also records 9.7 hours of daily sunshine in May.

That combination is why the Turkish Riviera is the strongest May beach bet on this page. Istanbul and Cappadocia are the inland and city alternatives in the same trip.

Greece: dry and warm, with a cooler sea

Greece is the driest country in the table. HNMS records 13.4 mm of rain in May at Heraklion on Crete, 14.3 mm at Athens and 16.4 mm on Rhodes, each across four to six rainy days.

The trade is the water: the Aegean is around 18.8 °C by MGM’s measure. Rhodes and Crete, the two southernmost big islands, are the warmest Greek picks for May. Check the Greek ferries guide before building an island-hop, and the cheapest Greek islands if price is the filter.

The Ionian side is wetter: HNMS gives Corfu 36.5 mm in May, more than double Crete.

Portugal: go south for the beach, north for the cities

Faro in the Algarve is the Portuguese pick for warmth: 23.5 °C, 26.2 mm of rain and 9.5 days above 25 °C by IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal. Lisbon matches it on temperature at 23.1 °C but is wetter at 57.8 mm, and Porto is a city trip in May, not a beach one.

Madeira is the outlier. Funchal is mild at 22.0 °C, but IPMA counts only 1.1 days above 25 °C in May. It is a walking island in May, the same as in winter.

Spain: heat inland, balance on the coast

Seville at 27.2 °C and 293 hours of May sunshine is the hottest stop in this guide. The coast is gentler: Málaga 24.3 °C with 20 mm, Almería 24.1 °C with 12 mm, both by AEMET. For a mixed city-and-coast trip, Andalusia in May is close to ideal, before inland heat takes over.

The Canaries are warm but not hot: Santa Cruz de Tenerife reaches 24.1 °C with 4 mm of rain, which is 3 °C above its January figure.

Croatia and the Balkans: shoulder season, not beach season

Dubrovnik averages 66.7 mm of rain over about 10 rainy days in May, with a mean temperature of 18.7 °C and just 5 days above 25 °C, per DHMZ. Split is slightly warmer at a 19.2 °C mean, with 57.5 mm and 9 days above 25 °C. Both stations log more than 270 hours of sunshine in May, so the rain comes in bursts, not in grey weeks.

That makes May a sightseeing month on the Adriatic: walls, old towns and Plitvice Lakes. Montenegro follows the same pattern: the WMO service lists Podgorica, the inland capital, from the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology at a 24.3 °C mean maximum and 89 mm of rain in May. Albania sits on the same coast and the same shoulder season.

Scandinavia and Iceland: light, not heat

May is when the Nordic light returns in earnest. MET Norway’s sunrise data for 31 May 2027 gives Oslo 04:09 to 22:21 and Stockholm 03:45 to 21:46, both over 18 hours of daylight. Reykjavik runs from 03:26 to 23:27, about 20 hours. Tromsø has no sunset at all on 31 May: the midnight sun has started.

The temperatures are spring, not summer. SMHI’s 1991-2020 normal puts Stockholm at a 16.5 °C mean maximum and 34.0 mm of rain in May. MET Norway’s 1961-1990 figure for Oslo is 15.8 °C and 53 mm. The Icelandic Meteorological Office gives Reykjavik 9.4 °C.

For Iceland, May is the start of the long-light season, before the summer crowd. Pack for 10 °C, not for the calendar.

Japan: after Golden Week, before the rainy season

The Cabinet Office lists Japan’s spring holidays as Showa Day on Thursday 29 April and Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day on 3, 4 and 5 May 2027. That cluster is Golden Week, when domestic trains and hotels fill. From Thursday 6 May the country is back at work.

The weather window is real but not dry: JMA’s 1991-2020 normals give Tokyo 139.7 mm in May, rising to 167.8 mm in June as the rainy season arrives. Kyoto is warmer, at 25.1 °C. Mid-May is the sweet spot.

Bali: drier, not yet driest

BMKG’s normal for Denpasar on the WMO service shows the wet season breaking: 345 mm in January, 93 mm across 8 rainy days in May, 53 mm in June. Bali in May is a good month with the odd shower rather than the driest one.

Peru and Machu Picchu: the dry season has arrived

SENAMHI’s data for Cusco on the WMO service shows the sharpest turn of any place on this page: 145.3 mm in January, 8.7 mm in May. The catch is the nights: the mean minimum is 2.5 °C. May is prime time for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, so check entry-ticket availability before you book flights.

Southern Africa: go to Kruger, not the Cape

South Africa splits in two in May. SAWS figures for Mbombela, the town nearest Kruger’s southern gates, give 13 mm of rain in May against 132 mm in January: the bush is drying out. Cape Town goes the other way, from 15 mm in January to 69 mm in May, as its winter rain begins.

The May 2027 holiday calendar, week by week

May’s price story is a string of short holidays, not one long block. Here is how they fall in 2027, from the official calendars:

  • 24 April to 2 May. Dutch meivakantie, the advisory dates for every region, per Rijksoverheid.
  • 3 May. UK early May bank holiday, per GOV.UK. French Zone B schools return the same day, under the 2026-2027 arrêté. Japan’s Golden Week runs 3 to 5 May.
  • 6 to 9 May. Ascension long weekend. Ascension is Thursday 6 May; France closes schools on Friday 7 May under its arrêté, and Berlin does the same by its Ferienordnung.
  • 10 to 13 May. The clean window. None of the school calendars on this page is on holiday.
  • 15 to 19 May. Pentecost weekend: Pentecost Sunday is 16 May, seven weeks after Easter Sunday on 28 March, and Whit Monday is 17 May. Berlin’s Pfingstferien take 18 and 19 May.
  • 18 to 28 May. Bavaria’s Pfingstferien, per the Bavarian education ministry. The other calendars on this page are back at school from 20 May.
  • 31 May to 4 June. UK spring bank holiday on Monday 31 May, then half term. The Royal Borough of Greenwich sets 31 May to 4 June 2027; other councils set their own week.

The practical read: if you have no school-age children, aim for 10 to 13 May or 20 to 28 May. The second window also gets you the warmer sea.

You booked the Adriatic for a beach week

Dubrovnik’s 66.7 mm and 18.7 °C mean are a spring climate. Book Croatia in May for sightseeing, or swap to Crete or Antalya for the beach.

You expected the Aegean to be warm

18.8 °C is swimmable for a few minutes, not an afternoon. The Turkish Mediterranean at 20.8 °C is the warmer water.

You booked Seville for the end of May

A 27.2 °C average hides the hot days, and the month warms as it goes. Early May is the easier half.

You landed in Tokyo on 3 May

Golden Week runs to 5 May 2027. Arrive on the 6th or later.
