Quick Answer

June is the first month the whole Mediterranean is beach weather, and the peak of several long-haul dry seasons. The Turkish State Meteorological Service puts the Mediterranean sea at 23.9 °C in June and the Aegean at 22.1 °C, both about three degrees up on May. On land, Rhodes averages a 28.3 °C maximum with 1.8 mm of rain, Faro 26.8 °C with 5.1 mm, and Croatia finally turns: Split logs 23 days above 25 °C. The traps are heat and rain. Córdoba averages 32.8 °C and Seville 32.2 °C by AEMET, and the Japan Meteorological Agency puts the start of Tokyo’s rainy season around 7 June. Long-haul, June is dry for Cusco (1.5 mm), Maun in Botswana (0.7 mm) and Bali (53 mm, against 345 mm in January), while Phuket gets 236.9 mm. The cleanest dates are 7 to 25 June 2027, after UK half term and before Germany’s first summer holidays on 28 June.

Where to go in June 2027, before the summer rush

June is the best-balanced month of the European summer. The sea has caught up with the air, the days are the longest of the year, and most school holidays have not started yet.

The catch is that June is already too hot in some places and still wet in others. Inland Spain and Morocco are in full summer heat, and East and Southeast Asia are entering their rainiest weeks.

The June table, from the met services

VoyageHacks pulled every figure below from the national meteorological service that publishes it, on 2 October 2026. Each row states its own normal period, because the agencies do not share one: AEMET’s public station pages carry 1981-2010, IPMA publishes 1991-2020, HNMS 1955-2010, MGM a series from 1930 and DHMZ a series to 2024.

DHMZ’s station pages publish the mean temperature and the count of days above 25 °C, not a mean daily maximum, so the two Croatian rows compare on the mean column and on rainfall.

Italy, Malta and Cyprus come through the WMO World Weather Information Service, which carries each national service’s figures with a mean maximum and rainfall but no mean temperature:

DestinationMean daily max, JuneMean daily minJune rainfallSource and period

Naples, for the Amalfi Coast26.7 °C16.2 °C32.8 mmItalian Air Force Meteorological Service, 1971-2000

Three numbers in those tables carry the decision.

Rhodes’s 1.8 mm. The southern Greek islands are effectively dry in June: HNMS counts 1.1 rainy days on Rhodes and 1.3 at Heraklion. If a guaranteed-sun beach week is the brief, this is where the odds are best.

Córdoba’s 32.8 °C. That is an average maximum, so a run of days well above it is normal. Inland Andalusia, Madrid and inland Cyprus are summer-heat destinations by June, not shoulder-season ones.

Faro against Lisbon. IPMA records 19.4 days above 25 °C in Faro in June and 16.9 in Lisbon, with 5.1 mm against 14.1 mm of rain. Both work in June. The Algarve is the warmer and drier of the two.

Where the sea is warm enough in June

June is the month the water catches up. The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes a monthly sea-water average for each of Turkey’s seas, from 1970 to 2025:

Sea (MGM, 1970-2025)MayJuneJuly
Mediterranean (Antalya coast)20.8 °C23.9 °C26.7 °C
Aegean (Bodrum coast)18.8 °C22.1 °C24.2 °C
  • The Mediterranean off Turkey jumps 3.1 °C from May to June, which takes it from a brisk swim to a comfortable one for most people.
  • The Aegean is still about two degrees behind. At 22.1 °C, Bodrum, the Cyclades and Santorini are fine for swimming, and warmer at the end of the month than the start.

MGM’s own breakdown shows recent years running warmer than the long-run figure: its annual Mediterranean average for 2014-2025 is 22.3 °C, against 21.5 °C for the full 1970-2025 series. Treat the June numbers as a floor.

The other met services used on this page publish air normals on the pages we checked, not sea normals, so the Spanish, Italian, Greek and Croatian coasts have no row here.

The Mediterranean in June, country by country

Greece: the driest beach week in Europe

HNMS records 1.8 mm of June rain on Rhodes, 2.4 mm on Naxos in the Cyclades and 2.9 mm at Heraklion on Crete. Rhodes reaches a 28.3 °C mean maximum, Crete 27.3 °C, and Athens 29.2 °C.

That makes Rhodes and Crete the strongest all-round June picks on this page: hot but not inland-Spain hot, almost no rain, and a sea above 22 °C.

The Ionian side is wetter: HNMS gives Corfu 15.5 mm in June over about 5 rainy days. For island-hopping, read the Greek ferries guide before you fix dates, and the cheapest Greek islands if price is the filter. Mykonos sits next to Naxos in the same dry Cyclades.

Turkey: the warmest water

Antalya has the warmest sea in this guide at 23.9 °C, a 30.8 °C mean maximum, 10.7 mm of rain over about 2.5 rainy days and 11.1 hours of daily sunshine, all per MGM. It is hotter than the Greek islands on land, so it suits travellers who want the water warm above everything else.

Bodrum is on the cooler Aegean, at 22.1 °C. Istanbul is a city trip in June.

Croatia: the month it becomes a beach destination

June is when the Adriatic switches seasons. DHMZ counts 23 days above 25 °C in Split in June, against 9 in May, and 19 in Dubrovnik, against 5. Both stations log more than 300 hours of June sunshine.

It is still wetter than Greece: Split averages 49.0 mm over about 8 rainy days and Dubrovnik 55.5 mm over about 7. Expect the odd storm rather than grey weeks. Hvar and Plitvice Lakes fit the same trip.

Spain: coast yes, interior with care

On the coast, Málaga and Palma both average 28.1 °C with 6 mm and 12 mm of rain, and Valencia 27.1 °C, by AEMET. That is close to ideal beach weather.

Inland is a different month. Seville averages 32.2 °C and Córdoba 32.8 °C, and both keep climbing: AEMET gives Córdoba a 36.9 °C mean maximum in July. If Andalusia is the plan, the first half of June is the easier half. Barcelona is the mild option at 24.9 °C.

Portugal: the Algarve is at its best before the holidays

Faro in the Algarve averages 26.8 °C, 5.1 mm of rain and 19.4 days above 25 °C in June, by IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal. IPMA counts only 0.3 days above 35 °C in the month, so the coast avoids the inland heat. Lisbon is close behind at 26.1 °C and 14.1 mm.

Madeira stays mild: Funchal averages 23.7 °C, with 5.9 days above 25 °C.

Italy, Malta and Cyprus

Sicily is the hot end of Italy: Catania averages 30.0 °C in June and Palermo 27.2 °C, per the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service. Cagliari on Sardinia has 11.9 mm of rain over about 2 days. Rome and Naples, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, are warm at around 27 °C but get more than 30 mm of rain.

Malta is one of the driest places on this page: the Malta Meteorological Office gives Luqa 3.2 mm in June and a 27.5 °C mean maximum. Cyprus is the hottest: Nicosia, inland, averages 34.3 °C, so base a Cyprus beach week on the coast, not in the capital.

Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland: the light month

June is the month of the longest days. MET Norway’s sunrise data for the solstice, 21 June 2027, gives:

PlaceSunriseSunsetJune mean maxJune rainfallClimate source
Tromsøsun does not setsun does not set12.5 °C59 mmMET Norway, 1961-1990

Stockholm03:3022:0820.8 °C61.7 mmSMHI, 1991-2020

Times are local. Above the Arctic Circle, in Tromsø and Rovaniemi, MET Norway returns no sunrise or sunset at all on 21 June: that is the midnight sun.

The temperatures are mild, not hot. Stockholm and Oslo sit around 20 °C, and Iceland around 12 °C, so June suits hiking, road trips and city breaks, not swimming. The Iceland itinerary and the Golden Circle guide make the most of the long evenings.

Sweden’s Midsummer is the one fixed date to plan around. Swedish law sets Midsummer Day as the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, which in 2027 is Saturday 26 June, with Midsummer Eve on Friday 25 June.

Southern Africa: peak safari conditions

Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, gets 0.7 mm of rain in June against 109.4 mm in January, and Victoria Falls 0.6 mm against 167.6 mm. Mbombela, near Kruger’s southern gates, has 8 mm. That is the heart of the dry season.

The trade is the cold nights: minimums of 6 to 8 °C at all three. Pack layers for early game drives. Cape Town is the exception: SAWS gives it 93 mm over about 13 rainy days in June, its winter.

Peru: dry and cold in the Andes

SENAMHI’s data for Cusco shows 1.5 mm of rain in June, against 145.3 mm in January, with a mean minimum of 0.3 °C. Days are clear and nights near freezing. For Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, check entry-ticket availability before you book flights. Lima, on the coast, is cool at a 19.7 °C mean maximum.

Bali and central Vietnam: the dry exceptions in Asia

BMKG’s normal for Denpasar shows Bali at 53 mm over about 6 rainy days in June, against 345 mm in January: close to its driest. Da Nang and Hoi An run on a different calendar from the rest of Vietnam: 68 mm in June, against 231 mm in Hanoi and 224 mm in Ho Chi Minh City.

Canada and Alaska: the start of the short season

June is warm enough for the outdoors in western Canada and Alaska. Vancouver averages 19.2 °C, Banff 18.5 °C with a 5.4 °C minimum, and Anchorage 18.2 °C with 30.5 mm of rain. Two catches: June is Calgary’s wettest month on the Meteorological Service of Canada’s normals (79.8 mm), and Juneau gets 112.3 mm over about 18 rainy days.

Long-haul in June: where it does not

Japan: the rainy season

The Japan Meteorological Agency defines tsuyu, the rainy season, as the weeks between spring and summer with more rain and less sunshine than either side. Its 1991-2020 normal dates:

JMA regionNormal startNormal endStart in 2026
Okinawaaround 10 Mayaround 21 Junearound 4 May
Kinki (Kyoto, Osaka)around 6 Junearound 19 Julyaround 2 June
Kanto-Koshin (Tokyo)around 7 Junearound 19 Julyaround 2 June
Northern Tohokuaround 15 Junearound 28 Julyaround 21 June

JMA’s normals give Kyoto 199.7 mm of rain in June and 133.1 hours of sunshine, against 182.4 hours in May. Tokyo gets 167.8 mm. JMA’s tsuyu table covers twelve regions from Okinawa to northern Tohoku and has no entry for Hokkaido, where Sapporo averages 60.4 mm in June. If Japan in June is fixed, Hokkaido is the dry-ish answer.

The Cabinet Office lists no national holiday in June 2027, so there is no Golden Week-style domestic travel peak. That is the one upside.

Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka: wet season arrives

The Thai Meteorological Department’s figures put Phuket at 236.9 mm over about 19 rainy days in June, against 23.3 mm in January. Bangkok gets 149 mm. In Sri Lanka, Colombo on the west coast averages 184.9 mm over about 16 days.

If the sea is the point, Bali and Da Nang are the drier bets in the region.

The June 2027 holiday calendar, week by week

June’s price story is simple: a clean middle, with holidays at both ends. From the official calendars:

  • 31 May. UK spring bank holiday in every UK nation, per GOV.UK, and US Memorial Day, per OPM.
  • 31 May to 4 June. UK half term. The Royal Borough of Greenwich sets these dates; other councils set their own week. Bavaria’s Pfingstferien end on 28 May.
  • 7 to 25 June. The clean window. None of the school calendars checked here is on holiday, and Japan has no national holiday all month.
  • 18 June. Juneteenth falls on Saturday 19 June, so OPM lists the US federal holiday on Friday 18 June.
  • 25 and 26 June. Swedish Midsummer Eve and Midsummer Day.
  • 28 June. Summer holidays start in Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland, per the KMK’s long-term schedule.
  • 1 to 3 July. Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg on 1 July, Schleswig-Holstein on 3 July, and France on Saturday 3 July under its 2026-2027 arrêté.
  • 10 July. The northern Netherlands’ zomervakantie, per Rijksoverheid. Bavaria waits until 2 August.

The practical read: if you have no school-age children, book 7 to 25 June. The second half of that window also gets you the warmer sea.

Cadence Travel Containers: Daily Routine Capsule Set (4 Medium 1.32oz + 3 Small 0.56oz)

Seven rigid, magnetic-lidded capsules that snap together into one flat labeled block instead of rolling loose around your bag. Interchangeable tiles mark shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer and pills, so you never open the wrong one half-asleep. The catch: rigid capsules hold less per unit than a squeeze bottle of the same footprint, so heavy users need more of them for a long trip.

Carry-on
Samsonite Freeform Hardside Carry-On Spinner, Black

Samsonite’s own listing gives 15 x 10 x 23 in with the wheels on, a 34 litre polypropylene shell and 6.5 lb empty, which is light for a hardside case. A built-in combination lock is TSA-approved per Samsonite’s own spec table. The catch: 23 in tall is over the 22 x 14 x 9 in figure most US carriers publish, so measure your airline before you buy, not after.

Where June goes wrong

You booked inland Spain or Morocco for the end of the month

Córdoba’s 32.8 °C and Seville’s 32.2 °C are averages, and July is hotter still. Marrakech averages 33.6 °C in June by Morocco’s Direction de la Météorologie Nationale. Go in early June, or go to the coast.

You planned Japan for the cherry-blossom weather

That was April. From about 7 June, Tokyo and Kyoto are in tsuyu. Go to Hokkaido, or go in May or autumn.

You booked Phuket for a beach week

236.9 mm in June. Bali or Da Nang are the dry options in the same part of the world.

You left the Greek ferries until the last week of June

The first German summer holidays start on 28 June 2027, and France follows on 3 July. Fix your island-hop in the ferries guide before then, or travel in the clean window.

You chose Cape Town for a June safari trip

Cape Town is in its wet winter, at 93 mm. Kruger, Botswana and Victoria Falls are in their dry season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it warm enough for the beach in Europe in June?

Almost the whole Mediterranean. By the national met services, Antalya averages a 30.8 °C daily maximum in June, Athens 29.2 °C, Rhodes 28.3 °C, Málaga 28.1 °C, Heraklion 27.3 °C and Faro 26.8 °C, and every one of them gets under 11 mm of rain in the month. The Turkish State Meteorological Service puts the Mediterranean sea at 23.9 °C in June and the Aegean at 22.1 °C.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in June?

Yes, in the eastern Mediterranean. MGM’s 1970-2025 average for the Mediterranean off Turkey is 23.9 °C in June, up from 20.8 °C in May, and the Aegean is 22.1 °C, up from 18.8 °C. Both keep warming into July, when they reach 26.7 °C and 24.2 °C, so late June is noticeably warmer in the water than early June.

Is Croatia a good idea in June?

Yes, June is the month Croatia turns. DHMZ’s normals give Split 23 days above 25 °C in June, against 9 in May, with 49.0 mm of rain over about 8 rainy days. Dubrovnik has 19 days above 25 °C and 55.5 mm. Both stations log more than 300 hours of sunshine in June. It is still wetter than Greece, where Rhodes gets 1.8 mm.

Is June a good time to visit Japan?

Only if you can live with rain. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991-2020 normal puts the start of the rainy season, tsuyu, around 6 June in Kinki and 7 June in Kanto-Koshin, ending around 19 July in both. Kyoto averages 199.7 mm of rain in June and 133.1 hours of sunshine, against 182.4 hours in May. Japan has no national holiday in June 2027.

When are the June 2027 school holidays?

In the UK, GOV.UK lists the spring bank holiday on Monday 31 May 2027, and the Royal Borough of Greenwich sets half term from 31 May to 4 June. The first German summer holidays start on 28 June in Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland, per the KMK. France starts on 3 July and the northern Netherlands on 10 July. VoyageHacks counts 7 to 25 June 2027 as the clean window.

Where is good for long-haul travel in June?

Places in their dry season. On the WMO service, Maun in Botswana gets 0.7 mm of rain in June, Victoria Falls 0.6 mm, Cusco in Peru 1.5 mm and Denpasar in Bali 53 mm, against 345 mm in January. Avoid Phuket, which the Thai Meteorological Department puts at 236.9 mm over about 19 rainy days in June, and Tokyo, at 167.8 mm.

Ready to price a June trip?

Decide first whether you want heat, water or light, because June sells all three in different places. For the sea, the Greek islands and the Turkish coast; for the long days, Scandinavia and Iceland; for long-haul, southern Africa and Peru.

Then pick the week. In 2027, 7 to 25 June is the window with no European school holidays in it, and the last of those weeks has the warmest water.

Next in the calendar: where to go in May for the shoulder season, then September, October, November and December, with January, February, March and April for the year ahead.
