Quick Answer

July is peak heat and peak crowds, so the best July trips go where the heat is not. By the national met services, the mean daily maximum is 20.8 °C in Brest (Brittany), 21.8 °C in San Sebastián, 22.1 °C in A Coruña, 24.7 °C in the Azores and 25.4 °C in Funchal on Madeira, against 36.0 °C at Seville airport and 34.2 °C in Antalya. The north is cooler still: Edinburgh 19.1 °C, Oslo 21.5 °C, Stockholm 23.6 °C. For warm water, the Turkish State Meteorological Service puts the Mediterranean at 26.7 °C in July. Long-haul, July is Bali’s dry season (55 mm), Cusco’s dry season (4.0 mm, against 145.3 mm in January) and the start of the Maasai Mara river crossings, which the Kenya Tourism Board places July to October. Avoid Phuket (284.1 mm). For price, travel 1 to 9 July 2027, before the Dutch holidays start on 10 July and England’s from about 22 July.

Where to go in July 2027, without the heat

July is the month most people can travel, which is exactly why it is the hardest month to get right. Southern Europe is at its hottest, and every major school calendar in Europe is either on holiday or about to be.

So this guide does one job: routing. It sends you to the coasts and mountains where a July afternoon is pleasant, tells you which famous places to time around the heat, and shows which weeks of July 2027 avoid the worst of the holiday pricing.

Where it is not too hot in July

VoyageHacks pulled every figure below from the national meteorological service that publishes it, on 2 October 2026. Each row names its own normal period, because the agencies do not share one: IPMA and Météo-France publish 1991-2020, AEMET’s station pages carry 1981-2010, and several rows come through the WMO World Weather Information Service with older periods.

Rainy days count days with at least 1 mm. The trade on this list is simple: the cooler the row, the wetter it tends to be.

Brittany and the Basque coast: cool, green, and not always dry

Brest averages 20.8 °C in July, and Météo-France counts only 3.6 days above 25 °C and 0.4 above 30 °C. The cost is rain: 70.7 mm across 10.6 days. Inland Rennes, by contrast, reaches 24.8 °C.

San Sebastián is similar at 21.8 °C with 86 mm over 9.8 days, the wettest July on the Spanish coast in AEMET’s table. A Coruña in Galicia is the drier compromise: 22.1 °C, 34 mm and 5.5 rainy days. Bilbao airport runs warmer at 25.4 °C.

Porto and northern Portugal

Porto is the city pick for July: 24.3 °C, 16.6 mm and just 3.1 rainy days, by IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal. IPMA counts 0.6 days a year at 35 °C or more in an average July there, against 1.7 in Lisbon.

Madeira and the Azores: the warm islands that do not overheat

Madeira is the strongest all-round July pick on this page. IPMA gives Funchal a 25.4 °C mean maximum, 1.7 mm of rain and only 0.4 days a year at 30 °C or more in July. It is warm enough for the sea and cool enough for the levada walks.

The Azores are a degree cooler and a little wetter: Ponta Delgada averages 24.7 °C, 26.0 mm over 4.8 rainy days, and IPMA records zero days at 30 °C in July across 1991-2020.

The Canaries: warm, dry, and breezy

The Canary Islands are hotter than Madeira but well short of the mainland. AEMET gives Santa Cruz de Tenerife 28.7 °C, no measurable rain and 337 hours of July sunshine. It suits a beach week; it is not the escape from heat that Madeira is.

Scotland, Scandinavia and Iceland: long days, light jackets

The north swaps heat for light. MET Norway’s sunrise data for 1 July 2027 gives:

PlaceSunriseSunsetNote
Edinburgh04:3122:0117.5 hours of daylight
Oslo03:5922:41over 18.5 hours
Stockholm03:3622:05about 18.5 hours
Reykjavik03:0523:56almost 21 hours
Tromsønonenonemidnight sun: the sun stays up all night

Temperatures are mild rather than warm: Edinburgh 19.1 °C, Oslo 21.5 °C, Stockholm 23.6 °C, Reykjavik 13.3 °C. Bergen is the warning row: 148 mm of rain over 18 days in July. For Iceland, those near-21-hour days make July the easiest month to fit the Golden Circle and the south coast into one trip.

The Alps: cooler up high, stormier in the afternoon

Valley stations show why the Alps work in July. Innsbruck averages 24.7 °C and Zurich 23.0 °C, both well below the Mediterranean. The catch is rain: Innsbruck logs 137.2 mm over 13.9 rainy days in July, so build slack into hiking plans and start early. Switzerland is the easiest Alpine base by train.

Not every Alpine valley is cool. Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites, averages 29.0 °C in July (1971-2000). Sleep higher.

The hot list: where to time July carefully

These are the famous summer destinations where July heat is a planning problem, not just a number.

How to read that table:

  • Seville and Madrid are city trips you should move to spring or autumn if you can. A 36.0 °C average means many afternoons above it. If July is fixed, sightsee before 11:00 and after 19:00.
  • Antalya is a beach, not a city break, in July. A 34.2 °C average high next to a 26.7 °C sea is a fine resort week and a punishing one for ruins and bazaars.
  • Coastal Athens is cooler than inland Athens. HNMS gives Hellinikon 32.2 °C against 33.8 °C at Nea Filadelfia. Book the Acropolis for opening time.
  • The Algarve and the Riviera are the moderate south. Faro (29.4 °C) and Nice (27.5 °C) run 6.6 to 8.5 °C below Seville airport.

Where the sea is warmest in July

The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes monthly sea-water averages from 1970 to 2025:

Sea (MGM, 1970-2025)JuneJulyAugust
Mediterranean (Antalya coast)23.9 °C26.7 °C28.1 °C
Aegean (Bodrum coast)22.1 °C24.2 °C24.6 °C

July is warm-water month across the eastern Mediterranean. The Aegean, which also washes the Greek islands from Rhodes to Santorini, runs about 2.5 °C behind.

MGM’s own breakdown shows recent years running warmer: its 2014-2025 annual Mediterranean average is 22.3 °C, against 21.5 °C for the full series. The other met services on this page publish air normals, not sea normals, on the pages we read, so the Atlantic coasts have no row here. Expect noticeably cooler water in Brittany, Galicia and the Azores than in Turkey.

Bali: the heart of the dry season

BMKG’s normal for Denpasar on the WMO service gives 55 mm across 4 rainy days in July, against 345 mm in January. Only August (25 mm) and September (47 mm) are drier in that record, so July sits squarely in Bali’s dry season, for Ubud as much as for the beaches of Canggu.

Kenya and Tanzania: the Great Migration reaches the Mara

The Kenya Tourism Board says the most dramatic part of the Great Migration runs from July to October, when the herds cross the Mara River into the Maasai Mara. July is the opening of that window.

The weather helps: Narok, the Mara’s county town, averages 16.6 mm of July rain, and Nairobi 17.5 mm over 3 days. Nights are cool, with Narok’s mean minimum at 9.0 °C. In Tanzania, Mwanza on Lake Victoria drops from 168.2 mm in April to 11.9 mm in July.

Peru: dry, clear and cold at night

SENAMHI’s data for Cusco shows 4.0 mm of rain in July against 145.3 mm in January; only June (1.5 mm) is drier. The mean minimum is 0.1 °C, so pack for frost at dawn. For Machu Picchu in the dry season, secure entry tickets before flights.

Canada: the mild alternative to a European summer

Vancouver averages 21.7 °C with 39.6 mm of July rain over 6.9 days, and Calgary, the airport for Banff, 22.9 °C with 67.9 mm over 13 days. Toronto is warmer at 26.4 °C.

Those are wet-season numbers for Thailand’s Andaman coast and northern Vietnam. Bangkok is a city break that copes with showers; Phuket is a beach that does not.

The Caribbean: hurricane season has started, but quietly

NOAA’s National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November. It also says the first named storm typically forms in mid to late June, the first hurricane in early to mid-August, and that most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, with the peak on 10 September.

So July is low-risk rather than no-risk. Keep bookings flexible, and read our hurricane season travel guide before booking August or September instead.

The July 2027 school-holiday calendar

July prices follow school holidays, and in 2027 they arrive in a clear sequence. Dates come from the official calendars:

Date (2027)Who starts the summer holidaySource
Mon 28 JuneHesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, SaarlandKMK
Thu 1 JulyBerlin, Brandenburg, HamburgKMK
Sat 3 JulyAll of France; Schleswig-HolsteinLégifrance arrêté; KMK

Thu 22 JulyLast day of the summer term in Greenwich, England (councils vary)Royal Borough of Greenwich
Sat 24 JulyNetherlands regio ZuidRijksoverheid
Thu 29 JulyBaden-WürttembergKMK
Mon 2 AugustBavariaKMK

The KMK dates are the first day of the holiday under the long-term summer rota agreed by Germany’s education ministers. The practical read:

  • 1 to 9 July is the cleanest stretch. France and a handful of German states are off; the Netherlands, England and Germany’s biggest state, North Rhine-Westphalia, are not.
  • From 17 July demand stacks up. Dutch Midden, then North Rhine-Westphalia, then England all start within a week.
  • 24 July onwards is full summer. Every calendar on this page except Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria is on holiday.

Liquids rule
Cadence Travel Containers: Daily Routine Capsule Set (4 Medium 1.32oz + 3 Small 0.56oz)

Seven rigid, magnetic-lidded capsules that snap together into one flat labeled block instead of rolling loose around your bag. Interchangeable tiles mark shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer and pills, so you never open the wrong one half-asleep. The catch: rigid capsules hold less per unit than a squeeze bottle of the same footprint, so heavy users need more of them for a long trip.

Packing
Bagail 8-Set Compression Packing Cubes

The best value compression set going. A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

Where July goes wrong

A heatwave arrives in the middle of your city break

The averages above are averages. MGM’s record for Antalya in July is 45.0 °C, Météo-France’s for Marseille-Marignane 39.7 °C, and even Brest has hit 39.3 °C (July 2022). Book rooms with air conditioning in the south, and keep the middle of the day for indoors.

A wildfire closes the road or the trail

Greece’s Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection publishes daily fire hazard forecast maps through the summer. Its forest-fire guidance tells people to respect signs prohibiting access in periods of high risk, not to use open-air barbecues near dry vegetation, and not to take shelter in a car if a fire approaches. Check the day’s risk before a hike, and follow 112 alerts.

You assumed Venice still charges a day-trip fee

The City of Venice’s access-fee site says the 2026 trial has ended: from 27 July 2026 the fee was no longer in effect, and any fee in later years is for the city’s governing bodies to approve. As of 2 October 2026 no 2027 calendar was published, so check cda.ve.it before a July 2027 day trip to Venice.

You picked the Alps for guaranteed sunshine

Innsbruck’s 137.2 mm across 13.9 rainy days is the wettest July in the cool-places table after Bergen. Start walks early and keep a rain day in the plan.

You booked a beach in Phuket or Hanoi’s region

284.1 mm in Phuket and 300 mm in Hanoi are monsoon months. Swap to Bali for the same budget and a dry week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where in Europe is it not too hot in July?

The Atlantic edge and the north. By the national met services, the mean daily maximum in July is 20.8 °C in Brest, 21.8 °C in San Sebastián, 22.1 °C in A Coruña, 24.3 °C in Porto, 24.7 °C in Ponta Delgada in the Azores and 25.4 °C in Funchal on Madeira. Edinburgh averages 19.1 °C, Oslo 21.5 °C and Stockholm 23.6 °C. Seville, for comparison, averages 36.0 °C.

Which places are too hot in July?

Inland Iberia, the Turkish Riviera and Athens need careful timing. AEMET gives Seville airport a 36.0 °C mean daily maximum in July and Madrid airport 33.5 °C. IPMA counts 11.5 days at or above 35 °C in Évora. MGM gives Antalya a 34.2 °C average high and a 45.0 °C record, and HNMS gives inland Athens (Nea Filadelfia) 33.8 °C.

How warm is the sea in July?

Warm in the eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish State Meteorological Service puts its 1970-2025 Mediterranean sea average at 26.7 °C in July and 28.1 °C in August. The Aegean is cooler at 24.2 °C in July. The other met services used on this page publish air normals, not sea normals, on the pages we read.

When do the summer school holidays start in July 2027?

France breaks up on Saturday 3 July 2027 under the national arrêté. In the Netherlands the zomervakantie starts on 10 July in regio Noord, 17 July in Midden and 24 July in Zuid. Germany staggers by state, from 28 June in Hesse to 2 August in Bavaria. In England, the Royal Borough of Greenwich ends its summer term on Thursday 22 July 2027, and other councils vary.

Is July a good month for a Kenya safari?

Yes. The Kenya Tourism Board says the most dramatic part of the Great Migration runs from July to October, when the herds cross the Mara River into the Maasai Mara. Kenya Meteorological Department data on the WMO service gives Narok, the Mara’s county town, 16.6 mm of rain in July and a 22.3 °C mean maximum. VoyageHacks treats July as the start of the Mara season, not its peak.

Should I avoid Southeast Asia and the Caribbean in July?

Southeast Asia’s west coasts, mostly yes: Thai Meteorological Department data puts Phuket at 284.1 mm of July rain against 23.3 mm in January. The Caribbean is a lower risk than it sounds. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center says the season runs 1 June to 30 November, but the first hurricane tends to form in early to mid-August and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October.

Ready to price a July trip?

Decide first whether you want heat or relief from it. For relief, Madeira, the Azores, Porto, Galicia, Brittany and the north. For heat with a sea to match, the Turkish Mediterranean, timed for a resort rather than a city.

Then pick the week. In 2027, 1 to 9 July is the stretch with the fewest overlapping school holidays; from 17 July the Dutch, German and English calendars pile in.

Elsewhere in the calendar: where to go in May for the Mediterranean before the heat, and September and October for the same coasts after it. The full list is in the when-to-go hub, and the travel styles cover beach, city and the rest.
