Quick Answer

In January, only five places in Europe average above 20 °C, and all five are Atlantic islands off the coast of Africa: Santa Cruz de Tenerife (21.0 °C), Gran Canaria (20.8 °C), Lanzarote (20.7 °C), Fuerteventura (20.6 °C) by AEMET’s normals, and Funchal in Madeira (20.0 °C) by IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal. The European mainland does not get there: Málaga is 16.8 °C, Faro 16.3 °C, Antalya 15.0 °C with 225.5 mm of rain. Prices fall the moment the Christmas school holidays end, which in France is 4 January 2027.

Where to Go in January 2027 If You Actually Want Warmth

January is the month the winter-sun lists lie hardest. They put the Algarve, the Costa del Sol and the Turkish coast next to the Canaries as if the four were interchangeable.

They are not, and the met services say so plainly. Skip this page if you want a cheap European city break, because January is a superb month for that. If you want to sit outside without a jacket, there are five places, and the gap between them and everywhere else is about four degrees.

The January table, from the met services

VoyageHacks pulled every figure below from the national meteorological service that publishes it, on 20 August 2026. Where AEMET’s public station pages carry the 1981-2010 normal rather than 1991-2020, that is stated: the period is the one the agency publishes, not a choice.

Two numbers in that table do more work than the rest.

Antalya’s 225.5 mm. That is not a wet week, it is the station’s wettest month of the year, on a record running from 1930. The Turkish Mediterranean in January is a winter climate that happens to sit on a summer coastline.

Faro’s zero. IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal records 0.0 days above 25 °C in Faro in January, and the same zero for Funchal. Nowhere in this table is beach weather in the sense a July traveller means. The Canaries and Madeira are shirt-sleeve weather; the mainland is a good coat.

What the five warm places are actually like

The Canary Islands: pick by rain, not by heat

The four main islands sit within half a degree of each other on January warmth, so choosing between them on temperature is noise. Rainfall is the real variable, and it splits them cleanly.

The eastern islands are drier: Fuerteventura at 14 mm and Lanzarote at 16 mm in January, against 32 mm at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If you want the highest chance of a dry week, go east; if you want green landscape and more to do off the beach, go west and accept the showers.

Madeira: the same warmth, a different holiday

Funchal’s 20.0 °C January maximum puts it inside the same band as the Canaries, but the island is built for walking rather than lying down. Its levada paths work all winter, which is the actual reason to go in January.

The trade is honest: IPMA’s normal shows Funchal reaching 25 °C on zero days in January, and the sea is cooler than the Canaries. This is a hiking and gardens month, not a swimming one.

When January is cheap, and exactly why

January’s price story is a school calendar, not a weather pattern.

The French school year for 2026-2027, fixed by arrêté and published on Légifrance, runs the Noël holidays from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 across all three zones. Germany, the Netherlands and the UK bracket the same period.

That gives January a clean shape:

  • 1 to 4 January. Still holiday season, still holiday pricing.
  • Second week of January onward. The cheapest travel window of the European winter. Schools are back everywhere, the February break has not started, and demand collapses.
  • From 6 February. The February holidays begin, Zone C first under the 2027 calendar, and prices climb again.

If you have no school-age children, the middle three weeks of January are the single best-value period in the northern winter.

Where January goes wrong

You booked the Mediterranean expecting sun

The mainland Mediterranean in January is cool and, in the eastern basin, genuinely wet. The numbers above are the check: if a destination’s mean daily maximum is under 17 °C, it is a city-break climate, and that is fine as long as you booked it as one.

You went in the first week

The first days of January carry Christmas-holiday pricing with none of the Christmas-holiday atmosphere. Shifting a trip by one week is often the largest single saving available in the whole winter.

You chose a Canary island on temperature

Half a degree separates them. Rainfall does not: Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are roughly half as wet as Tenerife’s capital in January. Choose on rain, terrain and flight price instead.

VoyageHacks checked every figure on this page against the meteorological service that publishes it on 20 August 2026. AEMET’s public station pages currently publish 1981-2010 normals; IPMA publishes 1991-2020; MGM publishes a 1930-2025 series. Each row above states which period applies, and none of these figures are forecasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it warm in Europe in January?

Only the Atlantic archipelagos. Using the national met services, five places average above 20 °C for daily maximum temperature in January: Santa Cruz de Tenerife at 21.0 °C, Gran Canaria airport at 20.8 °C, Lanzarote airport at 20.7 °C, Fuerteventura airport at 20.6 °C (all AEMET) and Funchal in Madeira at 20.0 °C (IPMA). Nowhere on the European mainland reaches 20 °C.

Is the Costa del Sol warm in January?

Not by beach standards. AEMET’s normals put Málaga airport at a 16.8 °C mean daily maximum in January and Almería airport at 16.9 °C, roughly 4 °C below the Canaries. Faro in the Algarve is 16.3 °C by IPMA’s 1991-2020 normal. These are pleasant walking temperatures in the sun and no more: IPMA records zero days above 25 °C in Faro in January.

Which Canary Island is warmest in January?

The differences are small enough to ignore. AEMET’s January mean daily maximums run 21.0 °C at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 20.8 °C at Gran Canaria airport, 20.7 °C at Lanzarote airport and 20.6 °C at Fuerteventura airport. Rainfall separates them more than heat does: Fuerteventura averages 14 mm in January and Lanzarote 16 mm, against 32 mm at Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

When do January prices drop?

As soon as the Christmas school holidays end. The French calendar for 2026-2027, fixed by arrêté, runs the Noël holidays from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 in all three zones. Once schools return in the first week of January, the whole of Europe is out of holiday season until the February break, which makes mid-January the cheapest travel window of the winter.

Should you go to the Mediterranean in January?

For cities, yes. For beaches, no. Antalya is the clearest warning: the Turkish State Meteorological Service records a January mean maximum of 15.0 °C and 225.5 mm of rainfall, its wettest month of the year. The Mediterranean coast in January is a cool, wet, low-season proposition, which is exactly why it is cheap.

When is the February half term in 2027?

France staggers it across three zones under the 2026-2027 arrêté: Zone C from 6 to 22 February 2027, Zone A from 13 February to 1 March, and Zone B from 20 February to 8 March. Most of the UK takes a week in mid-February. If you are travelling without school-age children, the whole of that block is worth avoiding on price.

Ready to price a January trip?

Pick the island first, then the week. The temperature difference between the Canaries is half a degree; the price difference between the first and third week of January is not.

Next in the calendar: where to go in September , October , November and December . If the kind of trip matters more than the month, the travel styles cover beach, city, ski and the rest, and the hotels hub has the stay-side guides.
