Where to go in April 2027, and what April actually changes

April is the first month of the year when the European mainland beats the Canary Islands on daytime warmth. That opens up the whole Mediterranean south for city and walking trips.

What April does not do is heat the sea. If you want to swim in comfort, this page will talk you out of April. If you want 20 to 25 °C for Seville, Crete or Marrakech without the summer crowds, April is the month.

Three things in that table are worth stopping on.

Seville wins on heat and loses on rain. Its 23.4 °C is the warmest reading in Spain here, but its 54 mm is also the wettest. AEMET records 36 mm in March and 30 mm in May, so April is the one spring month when a Seville trip should carry an umbrella.

Tenerife is now the dry choice, not the warm one. Santa Cruz de Tenerife gains only 0.6 °C over March and falls behind Seville on daytime heat. Its 12 mm of rain, against Seville’s 54 mm, is now the reason to pick it.

The east warms fastest. Nicosia gains 4.2 °C over March, Antalya 3.4 °C and Heraklion 3.1 °C. These three spend the winter well behind Andalusia and reach the same range by the end of April.

The Mediterranean south: warm enough to walk, too cold to swim

This is what April is for. Days in the low twenties, nights around 11 to 12 °C, and the heavy winter rain largely over.

The sea is the catch

The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes a sea water average for the Mediterranean coast of Türkiye: 16.6 °C in March, 18.1 °C in April, 20.7 °C in May and 28.1 °C in August, averaged over 1970 to 2024. Swimming at 18 °C is possible, but most people will not want to stay in long.

If swimming matters, May is the better month for the eastern Mediterranean. If you are going for Crete’s archaeological sites, Antalya’s old town or the Alhambra in Granada, April’s cooler water does not matter.

Pick by what you want to do

  • City and monuments: Seville for heat, Granada for a cooler base (6.0 °C nights, so pack a layer), Málaga for the coast.
  • Ruins and walking in the east: Crete and Antalya, both in the 20 to 21.5 °C range, both far drier than in winter. Antalya’s rainfall drops from 90.8 mm in March to 48.5 mm in April, by MGM.
  • The warmest short-haul option from Europe: Marrakech at 25.7 °C, with rainfall falling from 35.3 mm in March to 26.3 mm.
  • Dry and mild: Tenerife and the rest of the Canaries, where April rain is under a quarter of Seville’s.

Long haul in April: blossom, Songkran and the desert parks

April beyond Europe is about timing, not temperature. Every destination below has one fixed date that decides the trip.

Japan: the tail of the blossom, then Golden Week

The Japan Meteorological Agency sets the normal full-bloom date at 31 March in Tokyo and 4 April in Kyoto and Osaka. By early April the southern cities are past their peak within days. In 2026 Tokyo reached full bloom on 28 March, three days early, and Kyoto on 30 March, five days early.

For blossom later in April, go north. The normal full bloom is 13 April in Sendai and 26 April in Aomori. Osaka follows the same timing as Kyoto.

Then the calendar closes the month. The Cabinet Office lists Showa Day on Thursday 29 April 2027, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day on 3, 4 and 5 May. With the weekend of 1 and 2 May, that is five days off in a row for much of Japan. Plan domestic trains and rooms around those dates, not through them.

Thailand: Songkran in the hottest weeks

The Bank of Thailand lists Songkran Festival on Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April 2027. It is the Thai New Year, celebrated with water throwing in the streets and merit-making at temples. Expect to get soaked in the centres of Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

The weather is the trade-off. April is Chiang Mai’s hottest month at a 36.1 °C mean daily maximum, and Bangkok reaches 34.9 °C. Bangkok’s rainfall jumps from 65 mm in April to 220 mm in May by the Thai Meteorological Department’s normals, so April is the last month before the rains.

Jordan, Mexico and the US desert parks

  • Jordan: Amman at 22.6 °C is a walking climate, and Aqaba on the Red Sea is already 30.7 °C with almost no rain. The heat rises sharply in May: Aqaba’s normal reaches 35.1 °C.
  • Mexico: Cancún is 31.5 °C and dry in April, before rainfall more than doubles in May (88 mm). Mexico City is at the end of its dry season, at 26.6 °C by day and 10.8 °C at night.
  • US national parks: the NPS gives Zion an average April high of 75 °F (24 °C) and Arches 71 °F (22 °C). By July, Zion averages 100 °F (38 °C), so April is one of the comfortable months for hiking in the desert parks.

The 43 days with a school holiday in every one

Easter falls early in 2027, which moves the busiest weekend into March. What stays in April is the stack of school holidays either side of it, and the official calendars leave no gap.

  • 22 March to 2 April. Berlin’s Osterferien, fixed in the Berlin Ferienordnung. Other German states set their own dates.
  • 26 to 29 March. Good Friday to Easter Monday, per GOV.UK’s bank holiday list.
  • 26 March to 9 April. England’s Easter holidays in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Other councils publish their own weeks.
  • 3 to 19 April. France Zone C, under the 2026-2027 arrêté.
  • 10 to 26 April. France Zone A.
  • 13 to 15 April. Songkran in Thailand.
  • 17 April to 3 May. France Zone B.
  • 24 April to 2 May. The Netherlands’ meivakantie, advisory dates for all three regions. Schools may add a week from 1 to 9 May.
  • 29 April to 5 May. Golden Week in Japan.

Lay those end to end and there is no gap. From 22 March to 3 May 2027, 43 days in all, at least one of these major markets is on holiday.

The quietest stretch is a matter of degree, not a real low season. The week of 12 April has only the two southern French zones (A and C) on holiday in Europe and falls between England’s return and the Dutch break. If your dates are flexible, price that week against the rest of the month.

Where April goes wrong

You packed for the beach

At 18.1 °C, the Mediterranean in April is a sea to look at. The air gets warm enough for a beach afternoon. Few people swim for long.

You assumed Seville would be dry

Its 54 mm in April is more than in March or May. Pack for a few showers, and plan indoor stops like the Alcázar and the cathedral for the wet days.

You booked Kyoto for the second half of April

The normal full bloom in Kyoto is 4 April. By the last week of the month the blossom in Kyoto and Tokyo has usually finished, and Golden Week crowds start on the 29th.

You chose Phuket for dry weather

Phuket’s April rainfall is already 137.8 mm, more than double Bangkok’s. The Andaman coast is turning towards its wet season while central Thailand is still dry.
