Most Halloween trips go wrong for a boring reason: the event you flew for happened on the Wednesday, not the Saturday. Three of the ten destinations below peak on 31 October, and four finish before it.

How these ten were chosen
This is a dates-and-tickets comparison, not a review. Nobody from this site attended these events, and we do not claim to have.
- Only events whose organiser or venue publishes its own dates on its own website were included. Third-party “Dracula’s castle Halloween party” listings were excluded unless the venue itself confirmed them.
- 2026 dates are used wherever the organiser has published them. Where the 2026 edition is not yet announced, the entry says so and gives the 2025 edition as the reference.
- Ticket figures are the organiser’s own published price, quoted in the organiser’s currency. Where no price is published yet, the table says “see venue” rather than guessing.
- Weather is the October monthly climate normal from the WMO World Weather Information Service, supplied by each country’s national meteorological service. Reference periods differ by station: 1961-1990 for Copenhagen, 1971-2000 for Paris and Freiburg, 1981-2010 for the rest.
- Checked 16 August 2026. Programmes for several of these festivals are still being released, so confirm the day you plan to attend on the organiser’s page before booking a flight.

Two entries deserve a flag rather than a footnote.
Edinburgh is the one gap. The Beltane Fire Society had not published the 2026 Samhuinn date, venue capacity or price when this page was checked on 16 August 2026, and its site was still taking applications from 2026 group organisers. The society also states that tickets are sold only through Citizen Ticket and are not transferable or resaleable, so buying from anywhere else is money gone.
Bran Castle is not a Halloween venue. It is a genuinely worthwhile castle with a Dracula gift shop attached, open on normal hours through Halloween. The famous party is not the castle’s own event.
Families, teenagers or adults: which of the ten fits
- Families with children under 10: Disneyland Paris or Tivoli Gardens. Both are decorated rather than frightening, both include the seasonal programme in normal admission, and neither has an age gate.
- Families with teenagers: Derry Halloween or Dark Arts at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. Derry is free and outdoors, the Studio Tour is indoors and immune to weather, and both survive a teenager’s scepticism.
- Adults who want a real scare: Horror Nights Traumatica at Europa-Park, which sets a minimum age of 16 and runs from 19:00, with the food court open from 18:00.
- Anyone who wants the heritage rather than the horror: Edinburgh’s Samhuinn Fire Festival or Dublin’s Bram Stoker Festival. Samhain is the Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter, and it is the tradition Halloween grew out of.
- The tightest budget: Derry. The trail, the parade and the fireworks cost nothing, which is unusual for an event of this size, so the trip is a flight and a bed and little else.
- Warmth as well as Halloween: Salou, where October averages 22.3 degrees Celsius against 13.1 in Edinburgh.
How to do Halloween on the October half term
Halloween 2026 lands inside the school break for most of northern Europe at once, which is the single biggest reason the last week of October costs more than the first.

Three things follow from that table:
- The cheap Halloween trips are the ones that do not need 31 October. Dark Arts, PortAventura, Tivoli and Traumatica all run for six weeks or more. Going on 8 October costs less than going on 30 October for exactly the same experience.
- If your dates are fixed to half term, book the bed before the flight. Derry and Whitby are small places with fixed bed stock, and they sell out before fares peak.
- Midweek still works, even in half term. Derry’s light trail runs on the Wednesday and Thursday nights, so a Tue to Fri trip catches the trail and skips the Saturday night premium.
We are not going to put a percentage on the half-term markup, because a single route in a single week moves far more than any average. What late October actually feels like in each of these places
October normals are whole-month averages, and October cools sharply as it goes. Plan for the bottom of each range in the final week, not the middle.

The pattern is blunt: everything on this list except Salou is a 12 to 16 degree trip with rain on roughly one day in three, and most of it is spent standing outdoors after dark. Transylvania is the one to watch. Sibiu’s average October low is 3.5 degrees, the coldest night on this list by three degrees, because it sits inland at altitude while everything else is coastal.
The cities that do Halloween without an event
Not every trip needs a festival. Prague and Krakow are the two cities that carry a late-October break on atmosphere and price alone, and both have a genuine relationship with the season.
Prague’s old town runs guided history and legend walks year-round, so nothing needs to be timed to 31 October. Krakow sits inside a country where 1 November is one of the most observed days in the calendar, and the candle-lit cemeteries that evening are a real cultural sight rather than a staged one. Treat it with the respect a cemetery deserves.

Beyond Europe: Mexico’s Dia de Muertos on 1 and 2 November
Dia de Muertos is not the Mexican version of Halloween, and conflating the two is the fastest way to get it wrong. UNESCO inscribed Mexico’s indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, describing a family observance held at the end of October and the beginning of November in which households welcome the dead back with flowers, candles and food.
The fixed dates are 1 and 2 November. Oaxaca and Mexico City are the two places most visitors head for, and Mexico City’s large public parade is a modern addition rather than part of the traditional observance: the city government publishes its date in the autumn, and the 2026 date was not published when this page was checked on 16 August 2026.
Practical reality: this is a nine-hour-plus flight from western Europe landing on the wrong side of the October half term, so it is a separate holiday, not an add-on. Our Mexico guide has the regional detail and entry rules.
What can go wrong, and what to do about it
Timed tickets sell out before the flights do. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is pre-booked only and has no walk-up, Bran Castle’s own site warns that tickets often sell out well in advance, and the 2025 Samhuinn Fire Festival sold out. Buy the ticket first, then the flight.
Resale tickets for Samhuinn are worthless. The Beltane Fire Society states that tickets are available only from Citizen Ticket and are not available for resale or transfer on any secondary market. A social media resale is a loss, not a bargain.
The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026. EU summer time ends at 1am GMT on the last Sunday in October under Directive 2000/84/EC, and the UK moves the same night. Sunset arrives an hour earlier for the entire Halloween week, which suits light trails and ruins daytime sightseeing plans made on October’s earlier daylight.
1 November is All Saints’ Day. It is one of France’s official public holidays and is widely observed across Catholic Europe, including Poland, and in 2026 it falls on a Sunday. Expect Sunday-plus-holiday hours at museums, pharmacies and smaller restaurants on the day everyone flies home.
Bran Castle on a Monday is half a day wasted. Last entry is 18:00 every day, but Mondays open at 12:00 rather than 9:00. Build the visit around that, and give the drive from Bucharest a generous margin.
Outdoor events are weather-dependent and refund terms vary. Derry’s programme is free, so there is nothing to refund, but a paid outdoor event’s cancellation policy lives on the organiser’s own booking page. Read it before you buy, and pick a free-cancellation hotel rate for a trip built around one night.

Where is the best place to celebrate Halloween in Europe?
Derry~Londonderry in Northern Ireland runs the largest street Halloween celebration in Europe, and its 2026 festival takes place from 28 to 31 October with a free light trail through the walled city, a carnival parade at 7pm on Halloween night and fireworks at around 8.15pm. Edinburgh’s Samhuinn Fire Festival and the Disney Halloween Festival at Disneyland Paris are the strongest alternatives.
When is Halloween 2026 and is it a public holiday anywhere in Europe?
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026, and it is not a public holiday in any European country. The day after, 1 November, is All Saints’ Day and one of France’s official jours feries, and in 2026 it lands on a Sunday. Ireland does have an October bank holiday on Monday 26 October 2026, set by law as the last Monday in October.
Is Disneyland Paris Halloween worth it?
The Disney Halloween Festival runs from 26 September to 1 November 2026 and the decorations, villain encounters and seasonal entertainment are included with normal Disneyland Park admission, so there is no Halloween surcharge to weigh up. It suits families with younger children far better than anyone hunting a genuine scare, and the last week of October is the busiest week of the season.

Can you visit Bran Castle at Halloween?
Yes. Bran Castle in Romania opens daily through late October, 9:00 to 18:00 last entry from Tuesday to Sunday and from 12:00 on Mondays, with the standard ticket starting at 100 RON. As of 16 August 2026 the castle’s own website listed no Halloween night event for 2026, so treat any Halloween party advertised as taking place inside the castle as a third-party arrangement.
Book the event first, then the flight
Every other decision on a Halloween trip follows from one date. Fix the night you want to be standing in the crowd, buy that ticket, and only then open the flight search, because the event is the thing that cannot be moved.
If your dates are flexible instead, go in the first half of October: Dark Arts, Tivoli, PortAventura and Traumatica all run for weeks, and the same experience costs less before the school holidays stack up.
