Quick Answer
Best weekender bags 2026: decide where the bag rides before you pick one
A weekender bag is a soft, shoulder-carried bag of roughly 30 to 45 litres, sized for two or three nights. The question that decides which one to buy is not style. It is whether the bag goes in the overhead bin, under the seat, or on top of a rolling suitcase, because each of those has a different published size limit.
Most weekender listings say “carry-on friendly” and stop there. That is a looser claim than “fits as a free personal item”, and the two get blurred constantly. This page puts eight bags against nine airlines’ published boxes so you can see which claim each one actually meets.
Skip this page if you only drive to your weekends: any bag you like will do, and the fit table below will not matter to you.

VoyageHacks compared the manufacturers’ published dimensions, weights and capacities of 8 weekender bags against 9 airlines’ published baggage limits and 3 independent reviews (CNN Underscored, Forbes Vetted and OutdoorGearLab) on 2 October 2026. We did not test the bags ourselves.
US airline limits were read on each carrier’s own baggage page on 2 October 2026. The European carriers’ pages blocked automated reading that day, so their figures are the ones this site recorded from each carrier’s own page on 19 August and 2 September 2026, with dates in the Sources section.

Sizes are reordered longest side first so they line up with how airlines publish their boxes. The Bagsmart figures are CNN Underscored’s measurement of the Medium, and the Vera Bradley figures are Forbes Vetted’s measurement of the recycled-nylon version: our listing is the premium cotton one, which nobody has re-measured.
Which weekender bags fit which airline: the fit table
This is the table to read before you buy. A personal item is the one free bag that must fit under the seat in front of you. A carry-on is the larger bag that goes in the overhead bin, free on most US fares and paid on most European low-cost fares.
| Bag | AA / Frontier personal item, 18 x 14 x 8 in | US carry-on (AA, Delta, United), 22 x 14 x 9 in | Southwest / Frontier carry-on, 24 x 16 x 10 in | Ryanair / Wizz Air free bag, 40 x 30 x 20 cm | easyJet free bag, 45 x 36 x 20 cm | Ryanair paid cabin bag, 55 x 40 x 20 cm | Wizz Air / Lufthansa, 55 x 40 x 23 cm | easyJet large / British Airways, 56 x 45 x 25 cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vera Bradley Miramar | Yes, with room | Yes | Yes | No, 45 cm long | 2 mm over in length | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| LOVEVOOK Weekender | Exact match, zero margin | Yes | Yes | No | Under 1 cm over on two sides | 3 mm over in depth | Yes | Yes |
| Bagsmart Weekender (Medium) | No, 1.5 in too long | Yes | Yes | No | No, 49.5 cm long | 8 mm over in depth | Yes | Yes |
| Patagonia Black Hole 40L | No, 1.7 in too long | Yes | Yes | No | No | No, 22 cm deep | Yes | Yes |
| Eagle Creek Migrate 40L | No | 0.4 in over in depth | Yes | No | No | No, 24 cm deep | 1 cm over in depth | Yes, unexpanded only |
| Samsonite Better Than Basic | No | No, 14.2 in wide and 9.8 in deep | Yes | No | No | No | No, 24.9 cm deep | Yes, 1 mm to spare |
| Baggallini Modern Weekender | No | No, 15.7 in wide | Yes | No | No | No | 9 mm over in depth | Yes |
| Herschel Novel 43L | No | No, 11 in deep | No, 11 in deep | No | No | No | No | No, 28 cm deep |
Three things stand out:
- Depth is the number that fails. Six of the eight bags clear every length limit for a carry-on, and the misses on the US carry-on and European paid-bag columns are nearly all depth.
- The free European under-seat bag is out of reach for all of them. Ryanair’s and Wizz Air’s 40 cm length cap is shorter than the shortest bag here.
- “Over by a few millimetres” on a soft bag is a judgment call at the gate. A half-packed duffel can squeeze in; a full one usually cannot.
United’s personal-item box (9 x 10 x 17 in) is left out of the table because no bag here comes close to its 10 in width or 17 in length.
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L: the best weekender bag overall
The Black Hole Duffel 40L is a frameless 40-litre duffel in 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate, 50 x 32 x 22 cm and 1,045 g. It sits inside the 22 x 14 x 9 in box American Airlines, Delta and United publish, and Patagonia’s own product page describes it as meeting most airline and train carry-on requirements.
OutdoorGearLab named the Black Hole Duffel its Editors’ Choice in its April 2026 duffel guide, scoring it 87 out of 100 and calling it a bag it is comfortable recommending for flights, expeditions and car camping alike. Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee covers repair or replacement of defects with no time limit.
Buy it if you want one bag that handles flights, road trips and rough handling for a decade, and you fly US carriers or Wizz Air and Lufthansa. Skip it if you fly Ryanair on the paid cabin-bag fare: at 22 cm deep it is 2 cm over that box, and it has no shoe compartment. The alternative: the Eagle Creek Migrate 40L, lighter at 936 g and with backpack straps, at the cost of more depth.
Bagsmart Weekender: the best budget weekender bag
The Bagsmart Weekender is a lightweight polyester duffel with an unusual number of pockets: mesh and waterproof pockets inside the main compartment, a laptop compartment with more pockets, front, back and side pockets, plus a bundled shoe bag. CNN Underscored measured the Medium at 19.5 x 11.5 x 8.2 in, 1.74 lb and 31 litres; the Large is 37 litres.
CNN Underscored named it the best budget weekender bag in its 2026 guide after testing 29 weekenders, and was equally plain about its faults: in CNN’s water-spray test water pooled inside the main compartment because the zipper is not water-resistant, and the shoulder-strap rings squeaked under load.
Buy it if you want maximum organization for the money and you fly US carriers, where the Medium fits the 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on box. Skip it if you travel in rain a lot or need a free personal item: at 19.5 in long it misses the 18 x 14 x 8 in box. The alternative: the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, whose laminated fabric is built for weather.
Vera Bradley Miramar Weekender: the closest thing to a personal-item weekender
The Miramar Weekender is a 30-litre diamond-quilted weekender with four interior pockets, an adjustable strap and a concealed trolley strap. Forbes Vetted measured the recycled-nylon version at 17.8 x 11 x 7 in and 1.5 lb, which makes it the only bag on this page with real room inside the 18 x 14 x 8 in personal-item box American Airlines and Frontier publish.
Forbes Vetted named the Miramar its best lightweight weekender in its June 2026 update, scoring it 4.0 out of 5 and noting it was the lightest bag on its list. One caveat: Forbes tested the recycled-nylon version, and the listing on this page is the premium cotton one. Same pattern, same line, different fabric, so treat the size as close rather than certified.
Buy it if you fly American Airlines or Frontier on a basic fare and want a weekender that can ride free under the seat, or you want a gift with a pattern. Skip it if you fly United’s 17 x 10 x 9 in personal-item box or Ryanair’s free 40 cm bag: it misses both. The alternative: a purpose-built under-seat bag from our best personal item bags guide.
LOVEVOOK Weekender Bag: the most compartments in a shoe-friendly duffel
The LOVEVOOK Weekender is a 35-litre duffel with dual carry handles, an adjustable shoulder strap, a separate bottom shoe compartment and a PVC-lined wet pocket for damp swimwear or gym clothes. It is listed at 18 x 8 x 14 in, which are the exact three numbers of the 18 x 14 x 8 in American Airlines and Frontier personal-item box, laid on its side, with zero margin.
No major publication has reviewed the LOVEVOOK Weekender yet. It is here because it is one of very few bags on this page with both a sewn-in shoe compartment and a wet pocket, and its listed size fits the US carry-on box comfortably.
Buy it if you want shoes, wet clothes and clean clothes kept apart in one shoulder bag, and you are happy to use it as a carry-on. Skip it if you need a guaranteed free personal item: a bag that matches the box to the inch will not fit once it bulges, and LOVEVOOK does not publish its weight. The alternative: the Herschel Novel, the reviewed shoe-compartment duffel, if you can live with its depth.
Eagle Creek Migrate Duffel 40L: the best weekender to carry as a backpack
The Migrate Duffel 40L is a 47 x 26 x 24 cm, 936 g duffel in recycled 900D polyester with a 1680D ballistic polyester base and tuck-away backpack straps. It expands to 44 litres and 72 cm long, and Eagle Creek’s No Matter What lifetime warranty covers handles, zippers, fabric and buckles.
OutdoorGearLab scored the Migrate 53 out of 100 as a notable mention in its April 2026 duffel guide: light and packable for the price, with weaker weather protection than its Editors’ Choice bags.
Buy it if you walk a lot between station and hotel and want backpack straps plus a lifetime warranty. Skip it if your airline uses a strict 9 in depth sizer: at 24 cm it is 0.4 in over, and expanded it fits no cabin box at all. The alternative: the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, 2 cm shallower and better protected from weather.
Herschel Novel Duffle 43L: the style pick with a shoe compartment
The Novel is Herschel’s 43-litre duffel, 52 x 30 x 28 cm and 1 kg, in recycled 600D polyester with a waterproof zippered closure, vegan-leather handles and the signature bottom shoe compartment. Herschel backs it with a limited lifetime warranty against materials and manufacturing defects.
OutdoorGearLab scored the Novel 57 out of 100 in its April 2026 guide, finding it stylish and surprisingly durable for its category but marking it down for having no backpack straps.
Buy it if you mostly drive or take the train for weekends, or you are buying a recognizable gift. Skip it if you fly often: at 28 cm deep on paper it misses every carry-on box in the fit table, including British Airways’ generous 25 cm. The alternative: the LOVEVOOK Weekender for the shoe compartment in a shallower bag.
Samsonite Better Than Basic Weekender: the best partner for a rolling suitcase
The Better Than Basic Weekender is a structured weekender listed by Samsonite at 18.9 x 14.2 x 9.8 in and 2.9 lb, with a recycled PET lining, a drop-bottom section that keeps shoes away from clothes, and a trolley strap that slides over a suitcase handle.
No major publication has reviewed the Better Than Basic Weekender as of 2 October 2026; only retailer customer reviews exist, which we do not use as evidence. It is here because the trolley strap and drop-bottom make it the best design on this page for riding on top of a checked or carry-on suitcase.
Buy it if you travel with a rolling suitcase and want the weekender stacked on top through the airport. Skip it if this is your only cabin bag on American, Delta or United: at 9.8 in deep it is over their 9 in cap, and at 2.9 lb it is the heaviest bag here. The alternative: the Vera Bradley Miramar, which also has a trolley strap and fits under the seat.
Baggallini Modern Weekender: wide and low for the bigger US boxes
The Baggallini Modern Weekender is listed at 18 x 15.7 x 9.4 in. That wide, low shape fits the 24 x 16 x 10 in carry-on box Southwest and Frontier publish, and easyJet’s and British Airways’ 56 x 45 x 25 cm cabin bag.
No major publication has reviewed the Modern Weekender, and Baggallini does not publish its weight or capacity on the listing. It is here as the widest-opening bag on the page, for travelers who mostly fly Southwest.
Buy it if you fly Southwest or easyJet with a large cabin bag and want a wide mouth for easy packing. Skip it if you fly United, American or Delta: at 15.7 in wide it is well over their 14 in carry-on width. The alternative: the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, which fits every US carry-on box.

The size rules that decide which weekender you can fly with
Airlines measure the outside of the bag, including handles, wheels and anything clipped on. A listing that quotes the inside of the main compartment, or only a capacity in litres, tells you nothing a gate sizer can check.
US airlines
| Airline | Personal item (free) | Carry-on |

Edge cases: what goes wrong with weekender bags at the airport
- “Fits under the seat” with no airline named. Several listings promise this without saying whose seat. Southwest and Delta publish no personal-item size at all, so the claim can be true there and false on United.
- A US personal item can still fail in Europe. The Vera Bradley Miramar fits American Airlines’ box but is 45 cm long, 5 cm over Ryanair’s and Wizz Air’s free bag. On a trip that mixes both, pack to the tighter limit.
- Soft does not mean small when it is full. A frameless duffel packed to capacity holds its packed shape, and the Eagle Creek Migrate expanded to 44 litres is 72 cm long. Compression only helps a half-empty bag.
- Zippers leak before fabric does. CNN Underscored’s spray test found water got into the Bagsmart through the main zipper. If rain is likely, a laminated bag such as the Patagonia Black Hole is the safer choice.
- Batteries stay in the cabin. If a gate agent checks your weekender, take out any power bank first. Our power bank rules by airline page has each carrier’s limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a weekender bag be used as a personal item on a plane?
Only if it fits that airline’s personal-item box, which is smaller than its carry-on box. American Airlines and Frontier publish 18 x 14 x 8 in, United publishes 9 x 10 x 17 in, and Ryanair and Wizz Air allow 40 x 30 x 20 cm free. Of the eight bags on this page, only the Vera Bradley Miramar (17.8 x 11 x 7 in) fits the American Airlines and Frontier box with room to spare, and none fits United’s or the Ryanair and Wizz Air free bag.
What size weekender bag do I need for a weekend trip?
Forbes Vetted’s buying guide recommends a medium or large duffel of 40 to 50 litres for most overnight and weekend trips, and 60 to 90 litres for longer ones. The bags on this page run from 30 litres (Vera Bradley Miramar) to 43 litres (Herschel Novel), which covers two or three nights with careful packing.
Do weekender bags fit in the overhead bin as a carry-on?
Most do, but check the depth. American Airlines, Delta and United cap carry-on bags at 22 x 14 x 9 in, and several duffels are deeper than 9 in when packed: the Eagle Creek Migrate is 24 cm (9.4 in) and the Herschel Novel 28 cm (11 in). Southwest and Frontier allow a larger 24 x 16 x 10 in carry-on, which every bag here except the Herschel Novel fits on paper.
Which weekender bags have a separate shoe compartment?
The LOVEVOOK Weekender (bottom compartment plus a PVC-lined wet pocket), the Herschel Novel (bottom shoe compartment) and the Samsonite Better Than Basic Weekender (drop-bottom section) have one sewn in. The Bagsmart Weekender comes with a separate shoe bag instead. The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel and Eagle Creek Migrate have no shoe compartment.
Can I bring a weekender bag on Ryanair or Wizz Air for free?
Not one of these. Ryanair and Wizz Air both allow a free under-seat bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and every weekender on this page is at least 45 cm long. They are sized for the paid allowances instead: Ryanair’s 55 x 40 x 20 cm cabin bag and Wizz Air’s 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley bag.
Is a soft duffel smaller than its listed dimensions at the gate?
Only when it is not full. A frameless duffel such as the Patagonia Black Hole or Eagle Creek Migrate can be squeezed into a tighter sizer when half packed, but a full bag holds its packed shape, and staff measure the bag as you present it. Buy a bag whose listed size already fits the box.
The bottom line
Pick the airline box first, then the bag. If you fly US carriers with a carry-on, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L is the one to buy, and the Bagsmart Weekender is the budget choice for dry weather. If you need the weekender to ride free under the seat on American Airlines or Frontier, the Vera Bradley Miramar is the only bag here with room to spare. If you fly Ryanair or Wizz Air without paying for a cabin bag, no weekender works: buy from our best personal item bags guide instead.
