Quick Answer
Best travel pants 2026: decide what the pants have to survive first
Travel pants have three jobs, and most pairs only do two. They have to be comfortable for 10 hours in an economy seat, hold a passport and phone where a pickpocket cannot reach them, and still look acceptable at dinner after a day crushed in a bag.
Pick by the job that matters most to you: a long-haul flight, a pickpocket city, a hot climate or an office meeting at the other end. Skip this page if your jeans already do all of that for you: Pack Hacker’s own advice is that jeans work if they are comfortable, and the cost is only weight, bulk and slow drying.
Air-texturized nylon canvas, water-repellent and stain-resistant, stretch waistband, 6-inch crotch gusset, zipped back pocket and a front media pocket for the phone. Slim straight fit. The men’s all-rounder that goes from a 12-hour flight to dinner.

Last verified 2 October 2026. VoyageHacks compared the manufacturers’ published specifications of 7 Amazon-sold travel pants, plus the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant sold direct, against 4 independent reviews from GearJunkie (two guides), Pack Hacker and Travel + Leisure, read on 2 October 2026. Nothing here was worn or bench-tested by us, and no price appears because the Amazon card shows the live one.

Men’s travel pants
Western Rise A.T. Pant: the men’s all-rounder
The Western Rise A.T. Pant is a slim straight pant in air-texturized nylon canvas, with a stretch waistband, a 6-inch crotch gusset (an extra fabric panel at the crotch that lets you squat and climb into a window seat without strain), a zipped back pocket for the wallet and a front media pocket for the phone. Western Rise markets it as five times more durable than denim at half the weight, which is the maker’s claim, not a measurement.
No publication has reviewed the A.T. itself. Pack Hacker reviewed its sibling, the Western Rise Evolution Pant 2.0, in July 2026 and called it one of the most versatile pants on its list, built to replace jeans, hiking pants and dress pants. One availability note: Western Rise’s own web store showed a closed notice on 2 October 2026, and the Amazon listing is sold by Western Rise.
Buy it if you want one pant for the flight, the city and a light hike. Skip it if you sit on hard chairs all day: Pack Hacker found the Evolution’s zipped rear pocket noticeable when seated. The named alternative is GearJunkie’s best overall men’s pant, the Bluffworks Envoy, bought from Bluffworks.
prAna Brion: the value pick
The prAna Brion is a chino-cut pant in prAna’s Stretch Zion fabric, which prAna’s listing gives as 95% recycled nylon and 5% elastane with UPF 50+ sun protection and an adjustable hook-and-loop waist strap. Elastane (also sold as spandex or Lycra) is the stretch fiber that lets a woven pant move with you.
No publication has reviewed the Brion itself. Pack Hacker reviewed the prAna Stretch Zion Pant on the same fabric family in July 2026, praising its built-in belt and crotch ventilation but noting testers still ran warm and saw some bunching behind the knees.
Buy it if you want a durable pant for mixed city and trail days at a lower price than the Western Rise. Skip it if you are heading somewhere humid: Pack Hacker found this fabric family warm. The Outdoor Research Ferrosi, Pack Hacker’s best-value men’s pick, breathes better.
SCOTTeVEST Covert Cargo Chino: the pickpocket pick
The SCOTTeVEST Covert Cargo Chino looks like a plain chino and hides extra pockets inside for a passport, phone and cards, in four-way-stretch TEC|Flex fabric with a stretch waistband. SCOTTeVEST says it runs a little large in the waist and covers manufacturer defects for 2 years.
No major publication has reviewed it yet. It is here because hidden, separate pockets are the exact thing the UK government’s pickpocket advice asks for (see the rules section below).
Buy it if you are visiting a city where the government advice warns about pickpockets and you dislike neck wallets. Skip it if you are between sizes and cannot return easily. The alternative is a regular pant plus one of our anti-theft travel backpacks or a belt bag worn across the front.
Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible: the hot-climate pick
The Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible has zip-off legs that turn it into shorts, Omni-Shade UPF 50 fabric, quick-drying ripstop, two-way stretch and zippered security pockets. UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) is the rating for how much UV a fabric blocks: UPF 50 lets through about one fiftieth of it.
No independent review in our set covers it. It is here because it is the best-known convertible travel pant, and Columbia’s own product page lists it as a regular-fit sun-protection pant.
Buy it if your trip mixes a temple visit that needs covered legs with a 32°C afternoon. Skip it if you want one pant for a smart dinner: convertible zips read as hiking gear. For women, Travel + Leisure’s convertible pick is the Kuhl Splash Pant, which converts to capris.
Amazon Essentials Slim-Fit Stretch Chino: the budget pick
The Amazon Essentials chino is washed cotton twill with a little stretch, slim through the hip and thigh with a tapered leg, slant front pockets and buttoned back pockets. It has no zips, no water repellency and no sun rating.
No publication has reviewed it as a travel pant. It is here as the cheapest pant that looks office-ready the moment you leave the airport, for a business trip with a meeting at the other end.
Buy it if you fly to a meeting and want a chino that cost little. Skip it if it might rain or you plan to wash in a sink: cotton dries slowly. GearJunkie’s budget men’s pick, the UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chino, is the synthetic alternative.
Women’s travel pants
Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant: the reviewers’ pick, bought direct
The Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant is the strongest consensus pick in this whole category, and it has no product card here because Athleta sells it directly, not on Amazon. Travel + Leisure named it Best Overall in its women’s guide updated in March 2026, citing a breathable stretch fabric, UPF 40+ and a hidden zipped back pocket for a passport. GearJunkie named it the best lightweight wrinkle-resistant pant in September 2026 after it came out of a stuffed duffel smooth, and listed it as 86% recycled polyester with 14% elastane.
Buy it if you want one pant that goes from a flight to a meeting. Skip it if you are going somewhere cold: Travel + Leisure found the thin fabric is not ideal for low temperatures. GearJunkie’s best overall women’s pant, the Patagonia Quandary Jogger, is the warmer alternative.
prAna Halle: the women’s pick on Amazon
The prAna Halle uses the same Stretch Zion fabric as the men’s Brion (95% recycled nylon, 5% elastane, UPF 50+), with a low-rise waist that sits under a backpack hip belt, a snap-up hem and three inseams: 30, 32 and 36 inches.
No publication in our set reviewed the Halle. GearJunkie’s women’s guide reviewed a different prAna pant, the Sancho, and found prAna’s fit inconsistent across styles, advising sizing down.
Buy it if your trip mixes trails and towns and you want a choice of inseam. Skip it if you want a dressier pant for meetings: the Athleta above, or Vuori’s Villa Pant (Travel + Leisure’s lightweight pick, bought from Vuori), suit that better.
baleaf Women’s Travel Pants: the budget pick
The baleaf Women’s Travel Pants are a lightweight UPF 50+ stretch pant with an elastic waistband and inner drawcord, a 26-inch 7/8 ankle length, two side pockets and two zipped back pockets. The waistband is the long-flight feature: no button to press into you after six hours.
No publication has reviewed this model. Pack Hacker did include a different Baleaf pant, its Lightweight Jogger, as the cheapest pick in its men’s guide. It is here because it is the cheapest women’s pant we found with zipped pockets.
Buy it if you want a soft-waisted flight pant with zips for under the cost of most picks above. Skip it if you want a sturdier trail pant. Travel + Leisure’s long-flight pick, The Gym People Lightweight Athletic Joggers, is the other budget option.

The rules behind the advice: long flights and pickpockets
What the NHS and CDC say about pants on long flights
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg, and long periods of sitting raise the risk because blood pools in the leg veins. The CDC warns that part of a clot can break off and travel to the lungs as a pulmonary embolism, which is rare but can be fatal.
The NHS is the one official source that names clothing. For journeys of 4 hours or more by plane, train or car, its DVT page lists “wearing loose clothing”, drinking plenty of water and walking around when you can. That is the medical case for a soft waistband and a cut with room at the knee.
The CDC’s own steps are about movement:
- Stand up or walk every 2 to 3 hours on a flight, and pick an aisle seat if you can.
- Do seated calf and toe raises, and tighten and release your leg muscles.
- If you have added risk factors, ask a doctor about compression stockings or medication.
The NHS lists those risk factors as being over 60, obesity, oestrogen-based contraception or HRT, recent surgery or a hospital stay, pregnancy and dehydration. Compression socks are a separate decision, covered in our guide to the best compression socks for flights, and the rest of the seat kit is in long-flight essentials.
The CDC lists swelling, pain or tenderness and red or warm skin in the leg as DVT symptoms. Difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat or chest pain after a flight need urgent medical help.
What the UK government says about pickpockets
The UK government’s France travel advice warns that pickpockets often work in pairs or gangs, with one person distracting you while another reaches into your bag. Its advice for avoiding them:
- Keep your passport, credit cards and other valuables in separate bags or pockets.
- Use the inside compartments of bags where you can.
- Carry bags across your body rather than on one shoulder.
- Stay alert near tourist attractions and cash machines.
A travel pant with several zipped pockets is simply a way to follow the first point: passport in one pocket, cards in another, phone in a third. It applies to any busy city, from Paris to Barcelona, and pairs with a passport holder that zips shut.
The fabric terms, defined once
- DWR (durable water repellent) is a surface finish that makes water bead and roll off; it wears off with washing and is not waterproof.
- A waterproof membrane blocks water completely but breathes poorly, which is why almost no travel pant uses one.
- Merino wool is a fine wool whose natural lanolin resists odor, so it can be worn for days between washes.
What goes wrong with travel pants
- Lint. GearJunkie flagged brushed synthetics, including the UNIONBAY Rainier and the women’s Patagonia Quandary Jogger, for picking up lint and showing stains.
- Bagging out. GearJunkie notes elastane can break down over time and leave pants permanently baggy; it points to the Jack Archer Jetsetter, which stretches mechanically with no elastane, as the fix.
- Sizing drift. Fit varies between brands and within one brand (prAna, Kuhl, SCOTTeVEST all flag it). Buy where returns are free.
- DWR fades. Expect to re-treat a water-repellent pant with a spray after repeated washes.
- Magnets. GearJunkie notes that the magnetic waist closure on the Teren Lightweight Traveler can affect watches, cards or hotel key cards kept close to it.
- Zip pockets on hard seats. A zipped rear pocket that protects your wallet can dig in on a hard chair, as Pack Hacker found on the Western Rise Evolution.
- Heat. The Stretch Zion family runs warm per Pack Hacker. For humid trips, pick the breathier Outdoor Research Ferrosi or a lighter pant.
Pack pants rolled in a packing cube inside your carry-on suitcase to keep creases down.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best travel pants in 2026?
The best travel pants are a stretchy nylon or polyester blend with some elastane, at least one zipped pocket and a waistband that stays comfortable seated. For men, VoyageHacks’ Amazon pick is the Western Rise A.T. Pant, with the prAna Brion as the cheaper all-rounder. For women, the reviewers’ consensus pick is the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant, named Best Overall by Travel + Leisure and best wrinkle-resistant pant by GearJunkie, but Athleta sells it directly, not on Amazon. On Amazon, the prAna Halle is the women’s pick.
What should I wear on a long flight?
Loose, stretchy pants with a soft waistband. The NHS lists wearing loose clothing among the steps that lower the risk of deep vein thrombosis on journeys of 4 hours or more, alongside drinking plenty of water and walking around. The CDC adds standing or walking every 2 to 3 hours and seated calf exercises. Anything that binds at the waist or behind the knee works against that advice.
Do compression leggings or socks help on long flights?
They can for some travelers, but they are not a blanket recommendation. The CDC says travelers with added risk factors for blood clots should discuss compression stockings with a doctor, and lists movement and calf exercises as the steps for everyone. Travel + Leisure picked Spanx compression leggings on comfort and one tester’s reduced foot swelling, which is not a medical claim.
Are pickpocket proof travel pants really theft-proof?
No garment is theft-proof, and no official source claims one is. The UK government’s France travel advice tells travelers to keep passports, cards and other valuables in separate pockets or bags and to use inside compartments. Travel pants with several zipped or hidden pockets, such as the SCOTTeVEST Covert Cargo Chino, make that advice easy to follow. They make theft harder, not impossible.
What fabric is best for travel pants?
A synthetic blend of nylon or polyester with a few percent elastane. It resists wrinkles, dries fast and stretches when you sit, which is why it dominates the GearJunkie, Pack Hacker and Travel + Leisure lists. Cotton breathes but wrinkles and dries slowly. Merino wool resists odor for days but costs more and needs gentle washing.
Can I trust online sizing for travel pants?
Not blindly. GearJunkie found prAna’s women’s fit inconsistent across styles and advised sizing down, and Travel + Leisure found the Kuhl Splash Pant runs small. SCOTTeVEST itself says its Covert Cargo Chino runs a little large in the waist. Buy from a seller with free returns and wear the pants for a full afternoon at home before the trip.
The bottom line
Men: buy the Western Rise A.T. Pant for everything, the prAna Brion to spend less, the SCOTTeVEST for pickpocket cities and the Columbia Silver Ridge for heat. Women: the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant is the reviewers’ pick from Athleta; on Amazon, the prAna Halle or the budget baleaf. Whatever you choose, size it for sitting, because the NHS advice for 4-hour journeys is loose clothing.
