Quick Answer
Best crossbody bag for travel: buy the locks, not the leather
A travel crossbody has one job a normal handbag does not: staying shut and attached on a crowded metro in Barcelona, Paris or Rome. That means locking zips, a strap with a steel cable or Dyneema core inside it, and a body that sits in front of you. Everything else, including RFID lining, is a bonus.
This winter is when it matters most. Christmas markets, packed December trains and airport queues are exactly the “crowded places” the State Department’s advisories name. Skip this page if you only ever travel with a backpack and a money belt. Everyone else: eight bags below, each with a named independent review and the manufacturer’s published specification.
25 x 18 x 4 cm, 254 g, 2.1 L. Locking zips, a cut-resistant double-cable strap, an RFID passport pocket and a strap that clips to a chair. Reader’s Digest’s best crossbody for travel.

Every bag here fits inside Ryanair’s 40 x 30 x 20 cm personal-item box on its own. Only the two Pacsafe bags list a warranty in years on the product page (five).
Baggallini Securtex Memento: the one to buy first
The Baggallini Securtex Anti-Theft Memento Crossbody is a flat 25 x 18 cm bag at 254 g, the lightest anti-theft bag on this list. Baggallini lists slash-resistant panels, a cut-resistant double-cable strap, locking zips, an RFID-protected passport pocket and a back wallet, plus a strap that can be secured around a chair leg and a grommet for a charging cable.
Reader’s Digest named it the best crossbody bag for travel in its June 2026 anti-theft test, with testers calling it “pretty chic and compact for an anti-theft bag.” The same test found one flaw: the box cutter got through the lining and slash layer of an interior pocket, though not the outer shell. CNN Underscored’s Stephanie Luna found its locking zips fiddly at first, which she counted as a win against pickpockets.
Buy it if you want the lightest bag that still locks and resists a strap cut. Skip it if you carry a water bottle or an e-reader; the Travelon Mini Shoulder has more depth.
Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag: the value pick
The Travelon Classic Mini Shoulder Bag is 22 x 22 x 6 cm, 410 g and 2.5 L, which Travelon says holds any phone plus an e-reader. It carries Travelon’s 5-point system: locking zips, slash-resistant mesh body panels, dual cut-resistant strap cables, RFID card and passport slots, and a lockdown strap.
Reader’s Digest made it its best budget anti-theft bag in June 2026: the box cutter got through neither the front nor the bottom, and the inside stayed dry after a water spray. CNN Underscored also lists it as the slimmer Travelon option.
Buy it if you want the full anti-theft kit for the least money. Skip it if you need a padded strap for long days; Reader’s Digest flagged that the strap has none.
Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger: the most room
At 23 x 32 x 9 cm and 4.5 L, the Travelon Classic Messenger is the bag for a full day out: water-bottle holders, a key clip, RFID card and passport slots, and the same 5-point anti-theft system. Its adjustable drop of 18 to 30 inches (46 to 76 cm) is the longest here, which helps over a thick winter coat.
Reader’s Digest named it the best anti-theft bag overall in June 2026, though its tester found the narrow strap dug in when the bag held 5.5 lb (2.5 kg), and the zips let water in from the top. CNN Underscored made it an Editor Favorite for holding a surprising amount while staying organized.
Buy it if you carry a bottle, a guidebook and a spare layer. Skip it if you travel on a basic fare: at 9 cm deep it becomes your whole personal item. The Pacsafe GO is the smaller alternative.
Pacsafe GO Anti-Theft Crossbody: the pick for men
The Pacsafe GO is 24 x 16 x 7 cm, 281 g and 2.5 L, made of 600D recycled polyester. Pacsafe lists an eXomesh slash guard, a Carrysafe strap with a Dyneema core, a TurnNLock security hook, a dock lock and zip clip for the zips, RFID-blocking pockets and a 5-year limited warranty. The strap adjusts from 18.9 to 63.4 inches in circumference, enough for a down jacket.
Reader’s Digest made it its best unisex bag in June 2026, after its box cutter left virtually no marks on the bag or strap. Pack Hacker scored it 7.5/10 in February 2026, praising the security as intuitive but noting the zip clip can catch and the swivel hook can twist the strap.
Buy it if you want a plain, gender-neutral bag that resists a slash. Skip it if you need room for a tablet; the Pacsafe V Urban Sling has a sleeve.
Pacsafe V Anti-Theft Urban Sling: the bigger sling
Pacsafe has renamed the Metrosafe X Urban Sling the Pacsafe V Anti-Theft Urban Sling, and Amazon still sells it under the old name. It is 37 x 20 x 8 cm, 372 g and 5 L, with a padded 10-inch tablet sleeve, Roobar Sport locking zips, a PopNLock clip, eXomesh, a Dyneema-cored strap and a 5-year warranty.
Pack Hacker scored the Metrosafe X 7.5/10 in February 2026 and put it first in its July 2026 list of anti-theft bags. It praised the internal organization and found the security features stay out of the way, but noted the zips jingle when unlocked and the length can feel excessive on a narrow torso.
Buy it if a tablet, e-reader or folded scarf comes along. Skip it if you are petite; the Pacsafe GO is half the length.
Travelon Convertible Crossbody & Waist Pack: two bags in one
The Travelon Classic Convertible Crossbody & Waist Pack is 20 x 18 x 5 cm, 320 g and 1.5 L, and wears either across the body or around the waist. It has the same 5-point anti-theft system as the larger Travelon bags, with a locking front pocket and RFID card and passport slots inside.
Reader’s Digest named it the best day-to-night bag in June 2026: water-resistant, and the box cutter did not get through bag or strap. The testers questioned the stitching and the very small strap hooks, and advised against overstuffing it. Buy it if you switch between a belt bag and a crossbody. Skip it if you want a belt bag first; our belt bags for travel guide has the dedicated ones.
TUMI Voyageur Tyler: the premium pick without locks
The TUMI Voyageur Tyler Crossbody is 26 x 25.5 x 4.5 cm and 447 g, with a recycled-nylon shell, a front U-zip pocket, two front zip pockets, a magnetic back pocket for a phone, and a TUMI Tracer registration code for recovery. TUMI lists a 5-year limited global warranty. It has no locking zips, no cut-resistant strap, and TUMI does not mention RFID.
Forbes Vetted named it the best crossbody bag for travel in April 2026, noting its nylon showed no visible wear after months of use, while finding the small side pockets redundant. CNN Underscored also lists it for its interior organization. Buy it if organization and finish matter more than theft resistance. Skip it if you are headed for crowded metros; the Baggallini is lighter and locks.
BAGSMART Small Crossbody: the budget phone bag
The BAGSMART Small Crossbody is a 21 x 13 x 4.5 cm puffer bag at 160 g, with RFID-blocking card slots, two front zip pockets and a back pocket. CNN Underscored picked it in August 2026 for how much organization it fits at a very low price. It has no locking zips or cable strap, so it is a light phone-and-cards bag, not an anti-theft one.
Buy it if you want a cheap, light bag for evenings or as a second bag that packs flat. Skip it if your trip involves rush-hour metros; the Travelon Mini Shoulder is the cheapest bag here with real anti-theft hardware.

Why anti-theft features matter: what the advisories say
Pickpocketing is the most common crime against tourists in Europe’s busiest cities, and both the US and UK governments say so in their own words. A pickpocket is a thief who takes items from a bag or pocket without the owner noticing, usually in a crowd or during a distraction.
| Country | US State Department | UK FCDO |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | “Pickpocketing and other types of theft are very common in Spain”; passports have been stolen on planes, at gates and at baggage claim, with Barcelona airport security singled out (Level 2, issued 1 August 2026) | “Thieves use distraction techniques and often work in teams” |
| France | Pickpocketing and phone thefts are common, especially in crowded places; passports, phones, cash and cards are the usual targets (issued 28 May 2025) | Thieves and pickpockets operate on the Paris Métro, RER lines and mainline stations; keep passport, cards and valuables in separate bags or pockets |
| Italy | Petty crime is common at tourist sites and on public transport, including trains; purse snatching and pickpocketing are crimes of opportunity (Level 2, issued 10 September 2026) | Higher petty crime, particularly bag-snatching and pickpocketing, in city centres and at major tourist attractions |
Three features answer those risks directly:
- Locking zips. A zip pull that clips or locks into place, so a hand cannot open the main compartment in a crowd.
- Cut-resistant strap. A strap with a steel cable or Dyneema fibre inside, so it cannot be sliced and the bag pulled away.
- Slash-resistant body. A mesh layer under the fabric, so a blade cannot open the bottom of the bag.
The FCDO’s advice to split passport and cards between bags or pockets is the cheapest protection of all. Our Barcelona, Paris and Rome guides cover the specific hotspots.
What RFID blocking actually does
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the short-range radio that lets a reader talk to the chip in a contactless card or passport. RFID-blocking material is a metallic lining that stops that signal.
Visa says each contactless transaction carries a one-time code and that, because of it, skimmed card data is “difficult to use” for fraudulent purchases. A card also has to be within 1 to 2 inches of the reader to pay. An RFID pocket is still worth taking when it comes free, which it does on every anti-theft bag here, but it protects against the least likely threat. Our passport holder guide explains why e-passport chips already refuse a reader without the printed key.
Does a crossbody count as your personal item?
Yes, on most basic fares. Ryanair includes one small personal bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm on every fare and names a handbag as an example. United allows a personal item of 9 x 10 x 17 inches (22 x 25 x 43 cm), lists purses among them, and says small purses or bags are not allowed in addition to your personal item and carry-on.
The practical rule: on a basic fare, a crossbody plus a backpack is two items. Pack the crossbody inside the backpack until you are past the gate, then wear it at your destination. Our personal item bags guide has the full airline size table.
Edge cases and what goes wrong
- Unlocked zips do nothing. Every locking system here only works when used; Reader’s Digest and Pack Hacker both found the locks take practice.
- Water-resistant is not waterproof. Reader’s Digest found water got in through the Travelon Messenger’s zips. In winter rain or snow, keep a phone in an inner pocket.
- Winter coats eat strap length. A bulky down jacket can add 10 cm or more to the circumference you need. The Travelon Messenger (drop up to 30 in) and Pacsafe GO (up to 63.4 in) leave the most room.
- Slings are one-sided. Reader’s Digest found the Pacsafe Vibe sling’s zips easy to reach only from one shoulder; check which side suits you before a trip.
- Airport theft is real. The State Department reports passports stolen on planes and at baggage claim in Spain. Keep the bag on and in front of you through security and arrivals, not under the seat.
- Premium is not secure. The TUMI has no locking zips or cable strap; treat it as an organizer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best crossbody bag for travel in 2026?
For most travelers it is the Baggallini Securtex Anti-Theft Memento Crossbody: 254 g, 2.1 L, locking zips, a cut-resistant double-cable strap and an RFID passport pocket. Reader’s Digest named it the best crossbody bag for travel after a box-cutter test in June 2026. The Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag is the cheaper anti-theft alternative with 2.5 L, and the Pacsafe GO is the gender-neutral pick.
Do anti-theft crossbody bags actually stop pickpockets?
They make the quick grab harder, which is what pickpockets rely on. Locking zips stop a hand slipping into the main compartment, and steel-cable or Dyneema straps resist the cut-and-run. In Reader’s Digest’s 2026 box-cutter test, the Pacsafe GO showed virtually no marks, while the Baggallini Memento’s interior slash layer was cut even though its outer layer held. None of it helps if the zips are left unlocked.
Do I need RFID blocking in a travel crossbody bag?
It is a small bonus, not a reason to buy. Visa says every contactless transaction carries a one-time code, which makes skimmed card data difficult to use for fraudulent purchases, and a card has to be within 1 to 2 inches of a reader to pay. An RFID-lined pocket costs nothing extra on most anti-theft bags, so take it, but locking zips and a cut-resistant strap matter far more.
Does a crossbody bag count as my personal item on a flight?
Usually yes. Ryanair’s free small personal bag, 40 x 30 x 20 cm, lists a handbag as an example, and United says small purses or bags are not allowed in addition to your personal item and carry-on. On a basic fare, either wear the crossbody as your one personal item or pack it inside your backpack before boarding.
What is the best crossbody bag for men?
The Pacsafe GO Anti-Theft Crossbody is the gender-neutral pick: 281 g, 2.5 L, eXomesh slash guard, a Dyneema-cored strap and a 5-year warranty, and Reader’s Digest named it its best unisex bag. For a tablet or a light layer, the 5 L Pacsafe V Urban Sling, sold on Amazon as the Metrosafe X, has a 10-inch tablet sleeve and locking zips.
Crossbody bag, sling or belt bag: which is best for city trips?
A crossbody holds more in front of you and is easiest to wear over a winter coat. A sling like the 5 L Pacsafe V carries a tablet but is long on narrow torsos. A belt bag is the smallest option, for a phone, cards and passport only. The Travelon Convertible Crossbody & Waist Pack does both crossbody and belt bag at 1.5 L.
The bottom line
Buy the Baggallini Securtex Memento if you want one light bag that locks, the Travelon Mini Shoulder if you want the same protection for less, the Pacsafe GO or V Urban Sling if you want something gender-neutral, and the Travelon Messenger if you carry a bottle and a layer. Lock the zips every time, wear the bag in front on metros and at airports, and treat RFID as a bonus.
