An AirTag passport holder has a pocket sized for Apple’s tracker, so the Find My app can show where the passport is when it is not where you thought. The AirTag itself is sold separately and only works with an iPhone.

The Valante is a 26.9 x 15.2 cm zip case with six passport pouches, two boarding-pass pockets, 21 pockets in all, RFID lining, a water-resistant shell and both a wristlet and a crossbody strap. At 258 g it weighs less than a paperback and replaces four people digging through four bags at the desk.

It got more useful in 2025. The EU’s Entry/Exit System began registering non-EU travelers biometrically at Schengen borders on 12 October 2025, with a phased rollout that the Commission scheduled to complete by 10 April 2026, so families now hand over every passport at the border, not just at check-in. What RFID blocking actually protects

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the short-range radio that lets a reader talk to the chip in a passport or a contactless card without touching it. RFID-blocking material is a metallic lining that stops that radio signal.

For the passport book it is redundant. ICAO Doc 9303 Part 11, the standard every e-passport chip follows, states that “implementation of a protocol to prevent skimming of the data stored on the contactless IC and to prevent eavesdropping on the communication between IC and terminal is REQUIRED.” In practice the chip will not answer a reader until that reader has scanned the machine-readable zone printed on the data page and derived a key from it (the Basic Access Control or PACE protocol). A closed passport in a stranger’s radio range gives up nothing.

Two things in the same holder do lack that protection:

• The US passport card. A separate 3.375 x 2.125 inch card, valid for land and sea crossings to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda but not for flights. It carries a chip and no cover of its own.
• Contactless payment cards. A tap-to-pay card answers any reader in range. Its defence is the one-time cryptogram in each transaction rather than the sleeve, and no regulator has published a meaningful contactless-skimming fraud rate, but a lined slot costs nothing.

So: buy the lining for the cards, not for the passport, and never pay extra for it.

Can a tracker in a passport holder fly in checked baggage?

Yes, in both the cabin and the hold.
