The WH-1000XM6 is Sony’s current flagship, launched in 2026. Sony lists up to 30 hours with noise canceling on, quick charging, folding earcups, and a headphone cable of about 1.2 m plus a carrying case in the box. Sony’s own page does not state a weight, so we do not print one.

Buy it if your bag space is tight and you want a pair that folds into its case. Skip it if you want the longest battery: the Sennheiser Momentum 5 runs almost twice as long.

Buy it if you string several long flights together and hate charging on the road. Skip it if weight is the priority: the Bose is lighter by about 26 g.

Apple AirPods Max 2: for iPhone and Mac owners

AirPods Max 2 is Apple’s 2026 over-ear model with the H2 chip. Apple lists up to 20 hours, 386.2 g with cushions and a Smart Case. There is no 3.5 mm jack: wired audio is USB-C only.

Buy it if you live in Apple’s ecosystem and value automatic switching between iPhone, iPad and Mac. Skip it if you watch seatback films or want a light pair: it is the heaviest pick here and has the shortest over-ear battery. The Bose is the alternative.

The Space One from Anker’s Soundcore brand is rated at up to 40 hours with noise cancelling on and 55 with it off. It weighs 265 g, folds with rotating cups, and comes with an AUX cable and a travel pouch.

Buy it if you want over-ear noise cancelling and a wired input without flagship money. Skip it if you fly every week and want the strongest premium build: the Bose is the step up.

How loud a plane cabin is, and what the safety limits say

Cabin noise is usually just under the level where workplace hearing rules start. The US Government Accountability Office reviewed 8 published cabin-noise studies in report GAO-18-109R (November 2017) and found levels generally below 85 decibels on the Boeing 737 and 777, Airbus A321 and A330, and Bombardier CRJ-700 and DHC-8 Q400.

A decibel A-weighted, written dB(A) or dBA, is a sound level adjusted to how human ears hear. The limits GAO cites:

• OSHA action level: 85 dBA averaged over 8 hours, with a 5 dB exchange rate. OSHA’s legal limit is 90 dB over 8 hours.
• NIOSH recommended limit: also 85 dBA over 8 hours, but with a stricter 3 dB exchange rate, which GAO calls the method most firmly supported by scientific evidence.
• What the exchange rate means: under NIOSH’s rate, 100 dB is safe for only 15 minutes, against 1 hour under OSHA’s.

GAO also notes that flight-attendant groups report the worst noise on turboprop, older and tail-engine aircraft such as the MD-80.

Why the WHO recommends noise cancelling on airplanes

The World Health Organization’s Make Listening Safe guidance sets the safe listening dose at 80 dB for 40 hours a week, and says personal audio devices can output 75 to 136 dB. Its advice to individuals is to keep volume at no more than 60% of maximum, take breaks, and, in its own words, “frequent users of personal audio devices on trains or airplanes should consider using noise-cancelling earphones or headphones in these settings.”

The reason is volume. Over a loud cabin, people raise the audio to hear dialogue. Noise cancelling removes part of the background, so the same film is clear at a lower level.

Noise cancelling terms, defined

• Active noise cancellation (ANC): microphones on the ear cup or earbud sample outside sound and the headphone plays an inverted sound wave that cancels it before it reaches your ear.
• Passive isolation: the physical seal of an ear cushion or eartip blocking sound mechanically, with no electronics, so it still works when the battery dies.
• Transparency mode: the reverse of ANC, where the microphones pipe outside sound in so you can hear a flight attendant without taking the headphones off.

Seatback screens, wires and the two-prong adapter

A seatback screen needs a wire unless the aircraft offers Bluetooth pairing. Newer entertainment systems usually take a standard single 3.5 mm plug. Older systems use a two-prong airline jack, which needs a small two-prong-to-3.5 mm adapter between it and a normal headphone cable.

Two airline policies show how far that range goes:

• Air Canada has allowed personal headphones of any kind, wired or wireless, throughout the flight since 1 April 2018, except while the safety video plays. Bluetooth headphones work with the seatback system only on aircraft equipped for it; wired 3.5 mm headphones work on any aircraft.
• Cape Air, a small US regional carrier, lists Bluetooth accessories, headphones included, as not approved for use at any time on board.
