Quick Answer
Best luggage sets 2026: buy the set for the medium, not the carry-on
A 3-piece luggage set is sold on the carry-on. Look at the published dimensions and the carry-on is usually the piece that fits the rules least well, and the large is often over the checked limit too. The bag that reliably fits is the one in the middle.
That does not make sets a bad buy. It changes how you should choose one: pick on shell material, weight and warranty, then check each piece against the airline you actually fly. Skip this page if you only ever travel with one carry-on: a set buys you two bags you will not use, and the best carry-on suitcases guide is the better read.
Polypropylene shell, TSA combination lock on all three pieces, 10-year limited warranty. Carry-on 23 x 15 x 10 in (6.5 lb), medium 60.9 linear in (8.5 lb), large 65.8 linear in (9.6 lb). Picked by CNN Underscored and OutdoorGearLab as the value hardside.

Check price on Amazon Live price on AmazonHow VoyageHacks picked these seven sets
VoyageHacks compared the manufacturers’ published piece dimensions and weights of nine popular 3-piece luggage sets against the carry-on and checked-bag limits American, United, Delta, Lufthansa, Ryanair and easyJet publish, and read 3 independent reviews from 2 publications (OutdoorGearLab and CNN Underscored) on 2 October 2026. Seven sets made the list. Nothing here was bench-tested by us, and no price appears because Amazon’s live price is on each card.
Two budget sets were dropped: Coolife and Showkoo publish dimensions that vary between listings, and no major publication has reviewed either.
Every piece against the airline limits
Linear inches are length plus width plus height, measured on the outside including wheels and handles. The figures below are the manufacturers’ published external dimensions (the Omni 2 figures come from retailer spec pages, because Samsonite does not list this Amazon-exclusive set on its own site).
| Set | Carry-on piece (in) | Carry-on fits 22 x 14 x 9? | Medium, linear in | Large piece (in) | Large, linear in | Large fits 62 in? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsonite Freeform | 23 x 15 x 10 | No, over on all three sides | 60.9 | 31.1 x 20.9 x 13.8 | 65.8 | No |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 | 23 x 14.5 x 9 | No, 1 in tall, 0.5 in wide | 57.3 | 31 x 21 x 13 | 65 | No |
| American Tourister Stratum 2.0 | 22 x 15 x 9.5 | No, 1 in wide, 0.5 in deep | 56.3 | 32.5 x 20 x 12.5 | 65 | No |
| Samsonite Omni 2 | 22.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 | No, over on all three sides | 53 | 28.5 x 20.5 x 13.5 | 62.5 | Borderline |
| Delsey Helium DLX | 23.5 x 14.25 x 10 | No, over on height and depth | 57.8 | 32.75 x 20 x 13.25 | 66 (67 expanded) | No |
| Rockland London | 22 x 13.5 x 9 | Yes | 49 | 28 x 17 x 12 | 57 | Yes |
| Amazon Basics | 21.7 x 14.8 x 10 | No, 0.8 in wide, 1 in deep | Not published | 30.7 x 17.8 x 12.6 | 61.1 | Yes |
The pattern is the finding. Sets are sized to look generous, so the carry-on is a fraction over and the large is a few inches over. OutdoorGearLab measured the Freeform Large at 66 linear inches in its own testing and said in its review that this is technically larger than the 62 inch limit most airlines set.
Being a little over does not mean you will be stopped every time: gate agents rarely measure a carry-on that slides into the bin. It means you have no argument when they do.
Samsonite Freeform: the best luggage set for most people
The Freeform is a polypropylene hardside set with double spinner wheels, a TSA combination lock on all three pieces, 1 to 1.5 in of expansion and a 10-year limited warranty. Samsonite publishes the carry-on at 6.5 lb, the medium at 8.5 lb and the large at 9.6 lb, light for hardside.
CNN Underscored named the Freeform 2-piece its best budget luggage set in its 2026 test of nine sets, noting that a hammer left no dent or crack but a wall-scratch test left real cuts and the zippers let water in. OutdoorGearLab rated the Freeform Large its best hardshell for less (69/100) and measured 112.5 L inside.
Buy it if you check a bag once or twice a year and want a known brand with a long warranty. Skip it if you fly strict carriers with the carry-on: at 23 x 15 x 10 in it is the most oversized carry-on here. The alternative is the Samsonite Omni 2, which has a tougher polycarbonate shell.
Travelpro Maxlite 5: the lightest set
The Maxlite 5 is Travelpro’s lightweight softside line: polyester with a water and stain resistant coating, four 360-degree spinners, 21, 25 and 29 in pieces. Travelpro publishes the carry-on at 5.4 lb, the medium at 6.8 lb and the large at about 8 lb.
OutdoorGearLab tested the 25 in Maxlite 5 and scored it 66/100, praising its weight-to-volume ratio: 74 L of packing space at 6.7 lb, which it said makes staying under an airline weight limit almost guaranteed. It marked the bag down for tracking and stability when fully packed.
Buy it if you overpack and keep paying overweight fees. Skip it if you want hardside protection for fragile things. The carry-on’s case alone is 21 x 14 x 9 in; the wheels and handle push it to 23 x 14.5 x 9 in overall. The alternative is the Delsey Helium DLX, a heavier softside with an anti-theft zipper.
American Tourister Stratum 2.0: the budget hardside
The Stratum 2.0 is American Tourister’s entry-level hardside, in 20, 24 and 28 in pieces with spinner wheels and a textured shell American Tourister describes as a polycarbonate and ABS blend.
CNN Underscored reviewed the 20 in carry-on and wrote that it “may just be the best sub-$100 carry-on bag” he had used. It weighed 7.3 lb and held 42.8 L in CNN’s comparison table. The same review lists the downsides: no laptop compartment, no quick-access pockets and no integrated TSA lock.
Buy it if you want a name brand on a budget. Skip it if you need a lock built in, or if the 28 in piece’s 65 linear inches matters on your airline. The alternative is the Rockland London, which fits the limits but has a weaker ABS shell.
Samsonite Omni 2: the polycarbonate set
The Omni 2 is an Amazon-exclusive Samsonite set in 100% polycarbonate, the strongest of the three common hardside shells. It has spinner wheels, a 10-year warranty and a USB port on the carry-on that takes your own removable battery pack (not included). The listing states the carry-on has no TSA lock.
No publication has reviewed the Omni 2 itself. OutdoorGearLab tested the previous-generation Samsonite Omni PC 28 in and scored it 64/100, citing a cavernous main compartment, a scratch and water resistant shell and tough handling on mixed terrain. Treat that as a guide to the family, not to this exact set.
Buy it if you want a tougher shell than the Freeform’s and a large piece that sits at the checked limit. Skip it if you want a lock on every piece. The alternative is the Freeform.
Delsey Helium DLX: the premium softside
The Helium DLX is a polyester and nylon softside set from Delsey Paris: Silent-Core double spinner wheels, a SECURITECH anti-theft zipper, an integrated TSA lock on the 25 and 29 in pieces, a removable toiletry organizer and a 5-year worldwide warranty. Delsey publishes the full set at 25.4 lb.
No major publication has reviewed the Helium DLX yet. It is here because Delsey publishes a complete spec sheet for the set on its own site, and because it is the only softside set in this list with an anti-theft zipper.
Buy it if you want outside pockets, organization and a lock on the checked bags. Skip it if size limits matter: the large is 66 linear inches before you expand it, and the carry-on is 23.5 in tall. The alternative is the Travelpro Maxlite 5, which is lighter.
Rockland London: the set that fits every limit
The Rockland London is an ultra-budget ABS hardside set, 20, 24 and 28 in, with a 5-year warranty from its maker, Fox Luggage. Its carry-on (22 x 13.5 x 9 in, 6 lb) and its large (28 x 17 x 12 in, 57 linear in, 10 lb) are the only pair here that clear the US-majors limits on published dimensions.
No major publication has reviewed it. It is here for one reason: it is the set to buy if fitting the rules matters more than the shell. ABS is the weakest hardside material, and the large piece is smaller than the others, so you get less packing space.
Buy it if you fly a few times a year and hate gate-check arguments. Skip it if you travel often: ABS cracks sooner than polycarbonate or polypropylene. The alternative is the American Tourister Stratum 2.0.
Amazon Basics: the cheapest set with a checked-legal large
The Amazon Basics set is ABS hardside, 21, 26 and 30 in, expandable, 194 L in total. Its 30 in piece is 61.1 linear inches, just under the checked limit, but its carry-on is wider and deeper than 22 x 14 x 9 in.
Both publications that tested it were lukewarm. CNN Underscored found the shell took cuts and minor dents, the zippers let water in and no piece came with a TSA lock, and recommended spending more on the Freeform. OutdoorGearLab scored the 30 in piece lowest but one of 15 checked bags (55/100), citing lower-grade materials and a wobbly trolley handle.
Buy it if you need a big checked bag for one or two trips a year. Skip it if you want something that lasts. The alternative is the Freeform.
When a set is worse value than single pieces
A set is good value only when you use every piece. Samsonite, Travelpro and American Tourister all sell the same suitcases individually, so the bundle saves money only against buying all three separately.
A set is the worse buy when:
- You only ever take a carry-on. Buy one good carry-on suitcase that fits the sizer properly.
- You take a carry-on plus one checked bag. A 2-piece set or two single pieces costs less and avoids a third bag you store but never use.
- You fly budget airlines in Europe. Ryanair’s free bag is 40 x 20 x 25 cm and easyJet’s is 45 x 36 x 20 cm; no set’s carry-on piece fits either, so the carry-on in the set earns you nothing.
- You need a short-trip bag more than a suitcase. A weekender bag does the 2-3 night job better than the smallest spinner.
Airline size and weight limits, defined
These are the limits the table above is measured against. They change, so check your airline before you fly.
- Carry-on limit: the largest bag an airline lets you bring into the cabin, measured including wheels and handles.
- Linear inches: length plus width plus height of a bag’s outside, the single number most airlines use for checked bags.
- Checked size limit: the largest checked bag an airline carries without an oversize fee.
- Checked weight limit: the heaviest checked bag allowed before an overweight fee.
| Airline | Carry-on limit | Checked size limit | Checked weight (economy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm) | 62 linear in (158 cm) | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| United Airlines | 22 x 14 x 9 in | 62 linear in (158 cm) | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| Delta Air Lines | 22 x 14 x 9 in | 62 linear in (157 cm) | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| Lufthansa | 55 x 40 x 23 cm, 8 kg | 158 cm (62 in) | 23 kg |
| Ryanair | Free small bag 40 x 20 x 25 cm; 10 kg cabin bag 55 x 40 x 20 cm with Priority | Sold separately | Sold separately |
| easyJet | Free small bag 45 x 36 x 20 cm; large cabin bag 56 x 45 x 25 cm on paid fares | Sold separately | Sold separately |
The IATA cabin-bag guideline of 56 x 45 x 25 cm is a voluntary recommendation, not a rule any airline must follow. For what oversize and overweight bags cost in Europe, see airline baggage fees in Europe, and for the budget-carrier comparison, Ryanair vs Wizz Air vs easyJet.
Shell materials, defined
Polycarbonate is a tough, flexible plastic and the strongest common hardside shell. Polypropylene is a lighter, softer plastic that flexes rather than cracks but scratches more. ABS is the cheapest and most brittle of the three. OutdoorGearLab ranks them in that order, and ranks softside fabrics as ballistic nylon (strongest), standard nylon, then polyester (weakest).
What goes wrong with luggage sets
- The carry-on fails the sizer on a full flight. A piece an inch over usually goes unnoticed, but on a full flight or a strict carrier it can be gate-checked.
- Expansion pushes a large piece further over. Expanding the Delsey large takes it from 66 to 67 linear inches. Expand only the medium.
- The large piece fills past 50 lb. A 110 L suitcase holds far more than 50 lb of clothes. Weigh it before you leave with a luggage scale.
- USB ports and batteries. The FAA allows bags with a built-in lithium battery in checked baggage only when the battery is tiny (lithium ion up to 2.7Wh); anything larger must be removed and carried in the cabin. The Omni 2 port uses your own removable pack, so take the pack out before check-in, as the power bank rules by airline require.
- No lock where you expected one. Several carry-on pieces here have none; a TSA luggage lock fixes it.
- Matching bags are hard to spot. Three identical suitcases on a carousel look like everyone else’s. A luggage tracker in the checked pieces helps.
When to buy
Black Friday, on 27 November 2026, is the main sale week for luggage sets, and our Black Friday travel deals page covers what is worth watching. Amazon’s own advice is to use the Price History link on a product page, which shows up to 365 days of prices, to check whether a deal is a real low.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best luggage set in 2026?
For most travelers, the Samsonite Freeform 3-piece hardside set: CNN Underscored named the Freeform its best budget luggage set, and OutdoorGearLab rated the Freeform Large its best hardshell for less. VoyageHacks adds one caution from the published specs: the 28 in Freeform Large measures 65.8 linear inches, over the 62 inch checked limit most airlines publish, so the 24 in medium (60.9 linear inches) is the safer bag to check.
Do 3-piece luggage sets fit airline size limits?
Mostly not exactly. Of the seven sets compared here, six have a carry-on piece over the 22 x 14 x 9 in limit American, United and Delta publish, and four have a large piece over the 62 linear inch checked limit. Only the Rockland London set clears both on its published dimensions. The medium piece of every set with published dimensions stays under 62 linear inches.
Is a luggage set cheaper than buying the pieces separately?
Only if you use all three pieces. A set bundles the same suitcases the brand sells individually, so the saving is real when you need a carry-on, a medium and a large. If you only ever take a carry-on and one checked bag, a 2-piece set or two single suitcases usually costs less and leaves no unused bag in the closet.
Should I buy a hardside or a softside luggage set?
Hardside protects fragile contents and handles rain better; softside has outside pockets and gives a little when you squeeze it into an overhead bin. Among hardside shells, polycarbonate is the strongest, polypropylene average and ABS the weakest, per OutdoorGearLab’s materials guide. Among softside fabrics, ballistic nylon is the strongest and polyester the weakest.
Do all pieces in a luggage set come with a TSA lock?
No. The Samsonite Freeform locks all three pieces and the Delsey Helium DLX locks its two checked pieces, but the Samsonite Omni 2 carry-on and the American Tourister Stratum 2.0 carry-on have no integrated TSA lock, and CNN Underscored found that no piece of the Amazon Basics 3-piece set has one. Their zippers accept a separate TSA-approved lock.
The bottom line
Buy the Samsonite Freeform for most trips, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 if weight fees keep catching you, the American Tourister Stratum 2.0 on a budget, and the Rockland London if fitting every limit matters most. Whichever you choose, check the medium, not the large, and measure the carry-on against your airline before you fly. Pack it with packing cubes, tap any card above for the live price, and find the rest of the kit in the travel gear hub.
