Quick Answer
Best garment bag for travel: pick the airline rule first, then the bag
A garment bag is a soft carrier that keeps a suit or dress hanging, or folded once, instead of packed flat. The question that decides which one you buy is not the fabric. It is whether you are carrying it onto a plane, and which airline’s sizer it has to pass.
Folded garment bags are square, roughly 22 inches on each side. Airline carry-on boxes are long and narrow, 14 inches wide on American Airlines and United. That mismatch is why the bag you choose depends on your route, and why the table below checks every pick against the rules each airline publishes.

Last verified 2 October 2026. VoyageHacks compared the manufacturers’ published specifications of 8 garment bags against the carry-on rules American Airlines, United and Southwest publish, and against 3 independent reviews from Wirecutter, Travel + Leisure and CNN Underscored, on 2 October 2026. Nothing here was tested by us. Sizes come from the manufacturer’s Amazon listing or, where a reviewer printed one, from that review.
Garment bag sizes against the American, United and Southwest carry-on rules
This is the table no listing gives you. A bag can be turned any way in the sizer, so each bag’s three sides are sorted largest to smallest and compared with the airline’s box sorted the same way. “Over” names the side that misses and by how much.
| Bag | Published packed size | Sum of sides | American and United box (22 x 14 x 9 in) | American garment-bag rule (51 in total) | Southwest box (24 x 16 x 10 in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halfday Garment Duffel 45L | 22 x 12 x 12 in | 46 in | Over: depth by 3 in | Within | Over: depth by 2 in |
| Briggs & Riley Classic | 24.5 x 22.5 x 2 in | 49 in | Over: length by 2.5 in, width by 8.5 in | Within | Over: length by 0.5 in, width by 6.5 in |
| WallyBags 60-inch | 60 x 22 x 3 in flat; folded size not published | 85 in flat | Over when flat | Over when flat | Over when flat |
| ZEGUR Suit Carry-On | 23 x 22 x 4 in | 49 in | Over: length by 1 in, width by 8 in | Within | Over: width by 6 in |
| Travelpro Platinum Elite 22-inch | Case 22 x 14 x 9 in | 45 in | Fits (case); see the wheels note below | Not needed | Fits |
| Samsonite UpLIFT 23-inch | 22.83 x 18.11 x 3.27 in | 44.2 in | Over: length by 0.83 in, width by 4.11 in | Within | Over: width by 2.11 in |
| Modoker 45L Duffel | 22.8 x 11 x 11.8 in | 45.6 in | Over: length by 0.8 in, depth by 2 in | Within | Over: depth by 1 in |
| Amazon Basics Carry-On | 21.65 x 20.28 x 3.54 in | 45.5 in | Over: width by 6.28 in | Within | Over: width by 4.28 in |
Three things the table shows. First, every flat garment bag misses the 14-inch width that American Airlines and United set, which is exactly why American Airlines wrote a separate 51-inch rule for soft-sided garment bags. Second, the duffels miss on depth only, by 1 to 3 inches, and a soft duffel that is not overstuffed squashes by that much.
Third, the Travelpro case is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, but Travelpro’s listing gives 22.25 inches long and 9.5 inches deep once wheels and handles are counted, and both American Airlines and United measure with wheels and handles on. Travelpro says the bag was sizer-bin tested and fits most major US airlines’ overhead space. Delta’s carry-on page did not render its size figures when we read it, so Delta is left out rather than guessed.
Halfday Convertible Garment Duffel: the one three reviewers agree on
The Halfday is a garment duffel: you hang the suit or dress in the long section, then fold it around a 45-litre duffel body with shoe pockets and room for folded clothes. Packed, it is 22 x 12 x 12 inches. Halfday now gives a 2-year limited warranty on bags bought from Halfday, Amazon included, according to Wirecutter.
The reviewers line up behind it. Wirecutter named the Halfday Garment Duffel its best pick for a weekend away in its review updated 30 September 2026, calling creasing the trade-off. Travel + Leisure named it the best garment bag for destination weddings on 11 September 2026. CNN Underscored named it the best garment duffel, crediting the end clasps that keep clothes from sliding down.
Buy it if you need one bag for a wedding weekend: outfit, shoes and everything else. Skip it if you are flying United with a strict gate agent and an overstuffed bag, since its 12-inch depth is 3 inches over the box. The Modoker is the cheaper version of the same idea, and the Halfday doubles as one of the best weekender bags for trips with no suit at all.
Briggs & Riley Classic Garment Bag: the best one for suits
The Briggs & Riley Classic, sold on Amazon as the Baseline Classic Travel Garment Bag, is a traditional hanging garment bag in ballistic nylon with a built-in hanging hook. Wirecutter lists it at 24.5 x 22.5 x 2 inches and says it holds about two suits comfortably.
Wirecutter named the Briggs & Riley Classic its top garment bag in its review updated 30 September 2026, citing better construction than most bags it tried and a lifetime warranty with free repair and no proof of purchase needed. The flaws Wirecutter lists: it closes with snaps rather than a full zip, and there is no real shoe storage.
Buy it if you fly for work with a suit several times a year and want one bag for a decade. Skip it if you also need shoes and a change of clothes in the same bag; the Halfday is the alternative.
WallyBags 60-Inch Premium Tri-Fold: the wedding dress and gown bag
The WallyBags 60-inch is a 5-foot hanging bag that folds in thirds. A clamp called the WallyLock holds up to 6 hangers at the top so they cannot slide when the bag is folded, and the large exterior pocket takes shoes or a toiletry kit. WallyBags lists water-repellent polyester and a 10-year warranty.
Travel + Leisure named the WallyBags 60-inch its best garment bag for long garments on 11 September 2026: at 5 feet it fits long dresses without folding the skirt, and it came through testing without rips despite absorbing a little water. WallyBags does not publish a folded size. Folded in thirds, simple division puts its length near 20 inches, but its 22-inch width still misses the 14-inch American Airlines and United box.
Buy it if you are flying with a wedding dress, a gown or long formalwear. Skip it if you only carry suits: a 60-inch bag is a lot of empty fabric around a jacket. CNN Underscored’s gown pick, the 67-inch Dagne Dover Capri, is the alternative, though it is not one of the Amazon picks here.
ZEGUR Suit Carry-On Garment Bag: the reviewers disagree
The ZEGUR is a folding hanging bag, 23 x 22 x 4 inches and 2.9 pounds in polyester, as Travel + Leisure lists it. ZEGUR rates it for up to 4 hanging items.
Travel + Leisure named it the best garment bag overall on 11 September 2026, finding it fit a suit jacket, trousers, two shirts, a belt and dress shoes with room to spare. Wirecutter tested the same bag and left it out of its picks, noting a 5-year warranty on paper but saying it did not know how reliable that warranty would be.
Buy it if you want a proper suit bag for less than the Briggs & Riley and fly American Airlines, where its 49-inch total fits the garment-bag rule. Skip it if you want a warranty you can count on for years: the Briggs & Riley is the alternative.
Travelpro Platinum Elite 22-Inch: the rolling carry-on
This is a softside rolling carry-on that Travelpro builds to keep suits and dresses wrinkle-free. The case is 22 x 14 x 9 inches and weighs 9.9 pounds, the heaviest bag here by far.
No major publication in our research reviewed this 22-inch carry-on version. Its bigger sibling, the Travelpro Platinum Elite 50-inch Check-In Rolling Garment Bag, is a Wirecutter alternate and Travel + Leisure’s best rolling garment bag. It is here because it is the only bag in this list whose published case size matches the 22 x 14 x 9 inch box.
Buy it if you fly United often and want a garment bag that rolls and passes a strict sizer. Skip it if you hate weight or fly mostly short hops: the Samsonite folds flat at under half the weight. For a whole matched set, see the best luggage sets.
Samsonite UpLIFT 23-Inch Bifold: the crease fighter
The Samsonite UpLIFT is a bifold garment bag, 22.83 x 18.11 x 3.27 inches and 4 pounds. Its padded bi-fold bar stops a sharp crease at the fold, a hidden tri-fold bar handles longer items, and a wet pocket keeps toiletries away from the suit.
No major publication has reviewed it yet; it is here because it is the folded garment bag closest to Southwest’s 16-inch width, 2.11 inches over, and because its strap slides over a suitcase handle. Buy it if you want a known brand and a flat bag that rides on your roller. Skip it if you need a long dress to hang straight; take the WallyBags.
Modoker 45L Convertible Garment Duffel: the budget duffel
The Modoker opens to a 37.5 x 20.8 inch garment bag and zips up into a 45-litre duffel of 22.8 x 11 x 11.8 inches, with a detachable shoulder strap. Modoker’s own listing cites the 51-inch American Airlines garment-bag size as its carry-on case.
No major publication in our research reviewed it. It is here as the budget version of the Halfday: the same convertible design and the same 45-litre volume. Buy it if you need a garment duffel for one or two events a year. Skip it if you travel monthly; the Halfday has three independent reviews behind it.
Amazon Basics Carry-On Garment Bag: the simplest suit bag
The Amazon Basics bag folds to 21.65 x 20.28 x 3.54 inches and opens to 43.31 inches long, with a shoe compartment and a detachable shoulder strap. It is a plain suit bag and nothing more.
No major publication has reviewed it; it is here as the low-cost answer for the one wedding a year. Buy it if a suit and shirt are the whole load. Skip it if you need a dress hanging full length: 43 inches is too short for a gown, so take the WallyBags.
Away’s garment bag, and why it is not in the grid
CNN Underscored named the Away Garment Bag its best garment bag overall, finding suits stayed wrinkle-free through its stress tests and the bag kept water out in a 15-minute pour test. Away sells it direct from its own site only, not on Amazon, so there is no card for it above. Travel + Leisure found it too wide for a carry-on, and Wirecutter listed it as an alternate with a 1-year warranty.
What independent reviewers found
Three publications reviewed garment bags in 2026: Wirecutter, Travel + Leisure (38 bags over 6 months) and CNN Underscored (9 bags with shake, drop and water tests).

| Away Garment Bag | CNN Underscored | Best garment bag: suits stayed wrinkle-free through stress tests and it passed a 15-minute water test; only 2 hanger loops. | Read 2 Oct 2026 |
| Halfday Garment Duffel 45L | CNN Underscored | Best garment duffel: end clasps keep clothes from sliding, more structured than the other duffels, passed the water test. | Read 2 Oct 2026 |
| Dagne Dover Capri Garment Bag | CNN Underscored | Best for gowns: 67 inches long, folds into a tote, fits 2 to 3 gowns; no zip on the hanging section. | Read 2 Oct 2026 |
| Briggs & Riley Baseline Garment Duffel | CNN Underscored | Runner-up: clothes slipped inside and the lining got damp in testing. | Read 2 Oct 2026 |
The one real disagreement is the ZEGUR: best overall at Travel + Leisure, left out at Wirecutter. Read both before you buy it.
The airline rules for garment bags
These are the rules as each airline published them on 2 October 2026. A carry-on bag is the one bag you take into the cabin besides a personal item, and on all three airlines below a garment bag is that bag, not an extra.
| Airline | Carry-on bag limit | Garment-bag rule |
|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm), handles and wheels included; personal item 18 x 14 x 8 in | A soft-sided garment bag may instead measure up to 51 in (130 cm) in total length, width and height |
| United | 9 x 14 x 22 in (23 x 35 x 56 cm), handles and wheels included; personal item 9 x 10 x 17 in | No separate garment-bag size; a wedding dress or garment bag can have its own purchased seat with agent approval |
| Southwest | 24 x 16 x 10 in, free, plus one personal item | Garment bags are named as a carry-on example; a checked garment bag pays no oversize fee up to 110 in total, but standard bag fees apply |
The total-dimensions figure is the length, width and height added together. American Airlines is the only one of the three that measures a garment bag that way in the cabin, which is why a 22 x 22 x 4 inch folded bag is within its rule and over everyone else’s.
United’s seats-for-bags option is the answer for a dress that will not fold. United names wedding dresses and garment bags among the items people buy a seat for; the item must weigh under 165 pounds, an agent must approve it, and it stays belted into its own seat for the flight.
Weddings and holiday events: what goes wrong
- The full-bin gate check. A garment bag that passes the sizer can still be checked at the gate on a full regional jet. American Airlines describes valet-checking bags on American Eagle regional flights; pack anything fragile so it survives the hold.
- The garment bag is not free on Southwest when checked. Southwest waives the oversize fee for a checked garment bag up to 110 inches, not the normal bag fee.
- The gown longer than the bag. A dress longer than 60 inches has to fold at the hem, even in the WallyBags. If that is not acceptable, United’s paid seat is the honest option.
- The structured jacket in a duffel. Wirecutter’s menswear source, writer Derek Guy, says a tailored jacket can travel better folded properly into a good hardshell suitcase than in a garment bag, depending on the garment. If that is you, look at the best carry-on suitcases.
- The wrinkles that survive anyway. No reviewer promises a crease-free arrival. A small steamer fixes the last ten minutes: see the best travel steamers.
- The snap closure. The Briggs & Riley closes with snaps, not a full zip, so keep small items in a pouch rather than loose in the bag.
If the wedding is in December, Black Friday on 27 November 2026 is the last big sale before it. The Black Friday travel deals page covers how to judge a garment bag discount against its recent price history.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best garment bag for travel?
For most travelers it is the Halfday Convertible Garment Duffel, the only bag that Wirecutter, Travel + Leisure and CNN Underscored all picked in 2026: a hanging section for a suit or dress that folds around a 45-litre duffel with shoe pockets. For suits only, Wirecutter’s top pick is the Briggs & Riley Classic Garment Bag. For a long dress or gown, Travel + Leisure picked the 60-inch WallyBags.
Does a garment bag count as a carry-on?
Yes, on American Airlines, United and Southwest a garment bag is your one carry-on bag, not an extra. American Airlines is the exception on size: it publishes a separate limit of 51 inches (130 cm) in total length, width and height for soft-sided garment bags. United holds a garment bag to its normal 9 x 14 x 22 inch box, and Southwest lists garment bags among the carry-ons that must fit 24 x 16 x 10 inches.
What size garment bag can I carry on a plane?
On United, one that fits 9 x 14 x 22 inches including handles and wheels. On Southwest, one that fits 24 x 16 x 10 inches. On American Airlines, either one that fits 22 x 14 x 9 inches or a soft-sided garment bag up to 51 inches in total dimensions. Most folded garment bags are about 22 inches square, which is too wide for any of those boxes but inside the American Airlines 51-inch allowance.
How do I fly with a wedding dress?
Carry it on, in a long garment bag. Travel + Leisure picked the 60-inch WallyBags for gowns because it holds a long dress without folding the skirt, and CNN Underscored picked the 67-inch Dagne Dover Capri. If the dress will not fold into a carry-on, United lists a wedding dress as an item you can buy its own seat for: an agent must approve it, it must weigh under 165 pounds and it stays belted in the seat.
What is the difference between a garment bag and a garment duffel?
A garment bag is a single hanging sleeve that folds in half or in thirds and is carried by a handle or shoulder strap. A garment duffel, also called a convertible garment bag, wraps the hanging section around a duffel body, so it also holds shoes and folded clothes. The duffel carries more but creases the suit more, and its depth is what pushes it over a 9-inch carry-on limit.
Will my clothes still wrinkle in a garment bag?
Less, but some. Wirecutter warns that unless you pack carefully and wear forgiving fabrics you should not expect to avoid wrinkles entirely. CNN Underscored found the end clasps on the Halfday Garment Duffel stopped clothes sliding down during its shake and drop tests. Pack a small travel steamer for the wedding morning anyway.
The bottom line
Buy the Halfday for a wedding weekend, the Briggs & Riley for suits you fly with every month, the WallyBags for a gown, and the Travelpro if you must pass United’s sizer with no argument. Fly American Airlines when you can: its 51-inch garment-bag rule is the only one written for the bag you are carrying. Tap any card above for the current price.
Packing the rest: packing cubes for the folded clothes, a hanging toiletry bag for the hotel bathroom, and travel gifts for men or for women if the garment bag is a present. The flights section covers the trip itself, and the travel gear hub has the rest of the kit.
