It opens to 51 x 22 x 26 cm, has a backpack carry option, and is made of ocean-recycled 70D PU-coated nylon. It carries Eagle Creek’s No Matter What Warranty, which no other bag here offers.

Buy it if your suitcase is already at its limit and the spare must cost nothing in weight. Skip it if you are bringing back anything heavy or sharp-cornered: 70D nylon is thin. The Samsonite is the tougher alternative.

It folds flat rather than into a pouch, so it takes a little more space in a suitcase. Buy it if you want the cheapest documented checked spare at 54 linear inches. Skip it if you will fill it past 35 lb: the airline lets you go to 50 lb, but the bag is not rated for it.

Amazon Essentials XL 150L: read the size before you fly with it

The Amazon Essentials Extra Large duffel is 32.4 x 16.9 x 16.9 in, holds 150 L and is rated for 50 lb. It is on this list as a warning as much as a pick: at 66.2 linear inches it is over the 62 in checked-bag limit every major US airline publishes. American charges $200 for a bag over 65 in on US and Canada routes, and Delta $200 for 63 to 80 in, on top of the bag fee.

Buy it if you are moving, shipping by car or storing gear. Skip it if it is meant to fly; buy the Fmeida instead.

The rules: checked-bag limits and the second-bag math

A checked bag is any bag that travels in the aircraft hold rather than the cabin. The overweight fee is what the airline charges when one checked bag is heavier than the allowance, usually 50 lb (23 kg) in economy. A foldable duffel exists to turn an overweight fee into a second-bag fee, and on most airlines that is the cheaper side of the trade.

Fees are per person and per direction on American and Delta, so the second bag is normally a one-way cost: the duffel flew out folded and free.
