Quick Answer
Best belt bag for travel: decide what it has to hold first
A belt bag is a small zip bag on an adjustable strap, worn at the waist or across the chest. The only real decision is size: 1 L holds a phone, wallet and passport; 2 to 3 L adds a water bottle, a light layer or a small camera. Pick the size, then pick anti-theft or not.
Skip this page if you want a belt bag as a free extra bag on a budget airline. It usually is not one, and Delta says so in writing (details below). Everyone else: seven bags, each with what an independent reviewer actually found.
1 L, 11.4 x 17.8 x 5.1 cm, 99 g. The lightest bag on this list and Pack Hacker’s 8.3/10 pick: enough room for a phone, wallet and passport, small enough to forget you are wearing it.

VoyageHacks compared the published specifications of 8 belt bags and 7 independent reviews from 3 publications (Pack Hacker, Half Half Travel and CNN Underscored) on 2 October 2026, and checked the personal-item and screening rules against Delta’s, American Airlines’ and TSA’s own pages the same day. Nothing here was bench-tested. A bag made the list only if it has a distinct job, and a pick with no independent review says so. No price appears because the Amazon card shows the live one.

The Patagonia is the only pick under 100 g. The Peak Design is three times its volume, which is the difference between a wallet bag and a camera bag.
Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack: the one to buy first
A 1 L recycled-nylon hip pack, 11.4 x 17.8 x 5.1 cm, 99 g, with one main zip pocket. It holds a phone, a wallet, a passport and keys, and nothing you will regret carrying all day.
Pack Hacker scored it 8.3 out of 10 in a review updated 27 February 2026, calling it comfortable enough to forget about and roomy for a 1 L bag, but flagging the narrow pocket opening as fiddly. Buy it if you want the lightest bag that still takes a passport. Skip it if you need a water bottle in it: the Osprey Daylite is the 2 L alternative.
Pacsafe Go Anti-Theft Sling Pack: the pickpocket answer
The Pacsafe Go line uses a lockable zip clip, a slash-resistant panel and an RFID-safe pocket. A slash-resistant panel is a layer of cut-resistant mesh sewn into the bag so a blade cannot open it from outside.
Pack Hacker rated the Go anti-theft crossbody 7.5 out of 10 in February 2026, calling the security features intuitive but noting the zip clip catches on the zipper pull and the swivel hook twists the strap. The sling pack in the card above is the same Go line and hardware; Pack Hacker reviewed the crossbody version. Buy it if you ride metros and walk crowded old towns. Skip it if you want a soft, packable bag: the hardware adds stiffness. The alternative is the Travelon below.
Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L: when a camera comes too
A 3 L sling, 19 x 30 x 12 cm, with a FlexFold divider you can reshape around a small camera, an e-reader or a tablet mini. It wears crossbody or at the waist.
Pack Hacker scored it 8.3 out of 10 in February 2026 and wrote that “the quick-release adjuster is amazing,” while noting it bulges when packed full and that a divider seam frayed early on a test unit. Buy it if you carry a compact camera or a Kindle every day of the trip. Skip it if you only carry a phone and wallet: the Patagonia does that at a fraction of the bulk.
Osprey Daylite Waist Pack: for trips with trails
A 2 L waist pack, 198 g, made with bluesign-approved fabric, with internal organization and room for a light layer next to the essentials.
Half Half Travel recommended it on 20 September 2026 for hikers and travelers who want a durable, well-organized waist pack, while warning it reads as too outdoorsy for formal settings and is hand-wash only. Buy it if your trip mixes city days and hikes. Skip it if you want something that looks dressy at dinner: the Pander or the Patagonia is plainer.
Cotopaxi Allpa X 1.5L Hip Pack: the colorful one
Cotopaxi’s current hip pack is the Allpa X 1.5L, in recycled fabric and Cotopaxi’s bright two-tone colorways. The older Cotopaxi Bataan is no longer sold on Amazon, so ignore any list that still recommends it.
CNN Underscored’s 2026 belt-bag guide features the Allpa X, which a staff writer used as a day pack on the Inca Trail. That is a featured pick, not a scored test. Buy it if you want a bag that is easy to spot in a pile and holds a bit more than 1 L. Skip it if you want a neutral look: the Patagonia comes in quieter colors.
Travelon Anti-Theft Metro Waist Pack: the second anti-theft option
Travelon describes a five-point anti-theft system:
- slash-resistant mesh on all four sides and the bottom
- a steel-wire reinforced strap
- locking zip pulls
- an RFID-blocking pouch
No major publication has reviewed this waist pack yet. It is here because it is the only waist-worn anti-theft design from a brand whose anti-theft line we already cover in the anti-theft travel backpacks guide. Buy it if you prefer a waist pack to the Pacsafe sling. Skip it if you want a reviewer’s verdict before buying: get the Pacsafe Go.
Pander Two-Way Zipper Fanny Pack and the Lululemon question
The Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is the 1 L bag that made belt bags a travel staple, and CNN Underscored’s 2026 guide credits it as the bag that likely started the trend. It is not in the grid above for one reason: Lululemon does not sell it on Amazon itself. Its Amazon listings come from third-party sellers, at different prices and with stock that comes and goes. If you want the real one, buy it from lululemon.com.
The buyable alternative on Amazon is the Pander, a lightweight nylon belt bag in the same shape with a two-way zipper. In the same CNN Underscored guide, stylist Michaela Leitz recommends it as the budget-friendly, easy-care choice, and stylist Rena Behar calls it her go-to for hands-free travel. Buy it if you want the Lululemon look without the reseller lottery. Skip it if you need anti-theft hardware: get the Pacsafe Go.

Does a belt bag count as your personal item?
A personal item is the one small bag an airline lets you carry on in addition to a carry-on suitcase, sized to fit under the seat in front of you. There is no single industry rule for belt bags, so the answer is whatever your airline’s own page says.
| Airline | What its carry-on page says | What it means for a belt bag |
|---|---|---|
| Delta Air Lines | Names a belt bag and a fanny pack as personal-item types, alongside a purse, briefcase, small backpack, camera bag and diaper bag | On Delta, a belt bag is your personal item, not an extra |
| American Airlines | Describes a personal item as something like a purse or small handbag that fits under the seat, up to 18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm); lists only jackets, diaper bags, breast pumps and child safety seats as not counting | American does not name belt bags, and does not exempt them either |
In practice, a nearly empty belt bag worn under a jacket is rarely questioned at the gate. A full one worn next to a backpack is, by Delta’s own wording, a second personal item, and a strict gate agent can ask you to put it inside the backpack. On budget carriers, where the free bag is small (Ryanair’s is 40 x 30 x 20 cm), plan for the belt bag to fit inside your personal item bag at boarding.
Belt bags at airport security
TSA screens a belt bag like any other bag. TSA’s liquids rule allows liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of up to 3.4 oz (100 mL) each, all inside one quart-size bag, and that applies to a bag you wear. Refillable travel-size bottles are the easy way to stay under it.
In a standard lane, travelers remove belts and place bags in a bin for the X-ray, so take the belt bag off before you reach the scanner. TSA PreCheck travelers keep belts, shoes and light jackets on, which is the faster lane if you wear a belt bag on every trip.
Edge cases and what goes wrong
- The third-bag trap. A stuffed belt bag over a backpack strap reads as a third item. Empty it into the backpack before boarding on strict carriers.
- Buying Lululemon on Amazon. Third-party listings vary in price and stock; buy from lululemon.com or take the Pander.
- Following old lists. The Cotopaxi Bataan is gone; the Allpa X 1.5L is the current model.
- Wearing it behind you in a crowd. Any belt bag, anti-theft or not, is safest worn crossbody in front of your chest on metros and in markets.
- The passport fit. A 1 L bag takes a passport, but not a bulky family organizer; a slim passport holder fits, a six-passport case does not.
Belt bags as gifts and on Black Friday
Belt bags are one of the most searched travel gifts every December, which is why they sit in our travel gifts for women and travel gifts for men guides. If you are buying one as a gift, Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026, and the Black Friday travel deals page explains how to check a deal against the price history before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best belt bag for travel in 2026?
For most travelers it is the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack: 1 L, 99 g, and scored 8.3 out of 10 by Pack Hacker. Pick the Pacsafe Go anti-theft sling for pickpocket-heavy cities, the Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L if a small camera comes along, and the Pander two-way zipper belt bag if you want the Lululemon look on a budget.
Does a belt bag count as my personal item on a flight?
Usually, yes. Delta’s carry-on baggage page names a belt bag and a fanny pack as personal-item types, alongside a purse, briefcase and small backpack, so on Delta it is your personal item, not a free extra. American Airlines does not name belt bags: its page describes a personal item as something like a purse or small handbag that fits under the seat, up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches, and only jackets, diaper bags, breast pumps and child safety seats are listed as not counting.
Can you bring liquids in a belt bag through TSA?
Yes, under the same rule as any carry-on. TSA’s liquids rule limits liquids, gels and aerosols to 3.4 oz (100 mL) per container, all in one quart-size bag. TSA publishes no exemption for a bag you wear, and a belt bag goes through the X-ray like any other bag.
Do you have to take off a fanny pack at airport security?
In a standard TSA lane, plan on it: travelers remove belts and put bags in a bin for the X-ray, and a belt bag is a bag. TSA PreCheck travelers keep belts, shoes and light jackets on, which makes the stop much faster for anyone who wears a belt bag every trip.
What is the difference between a belt bag, a fanny pack and a hip pack?
Very little. Belt bag and fanny pack are used interchangeably in fashion for a small zip bag on an adjustable strap, and hip pack is the outdoor industry’s name for the same thing, used by Patagonia, Osprey and Cotopaxi. A sling is the same idea built to be worn across the body, usually a little bigger.
Is an anti-theft belt bag worth it for travel?
In crowded tourist areas, often yes. Lockable zips and slash-resistant panels, as on the Pacsafe Go line and the Travelon Metro waist pack, stop the quick unzip and the cut strap that most bag theft relies on. The cost is a heavier, stiffer bag than a plain nylon belt bag, which matters less if you wear it crossbody in front of you.
The bottom line
Buy the Patagonia if you carry a phone, wallet and passport; the Pacsafe Go for pickpocket cities; the Peak Design 3L for a camera; the Osprey Daylite for trips with trails; and the Pander for the Lululemon look on a budget. On Delta it is your personal item, so pack it inside your bag at a strict gate. Tap any card above for the current price.
