Quick Answer

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and the travel peak runs from roughly Thursday 5 November outbound to the two weekends after the festival inbound. Google Flights puts the lowest international fares at 49 days or more before departure, so the practical deadline for a 5 to 8 November arrival is around 17 to 20 September 2026, which makes mid-August comfortably early rather than late. If your dates are locked to the peak days, decide now, because the cheapest fare buckets on thin routes close first and airlines do not reopen them.

Price reality check: The lowest fares in this guide are low-season prices booked 5–8 weeks ahead. The closer you book to departure, the higher they climb: last-minute dates in July, August and school holidays often cost double or triple.

Diwali Flights to India 2026: Book by Late September, Not Late October

You are here because the fare you looked at in June has gone up and you want to know whether you have missed the window. You have not. On the published international booking data you have about a month of runway left, and the bigger lever is which day you fly, not which day you buy.

Here is the part most guides skip: on the route we checked live, leaving on Diwali day itself was 29% cheaper than leaving on the Thursday before. Same airline, same flight number, same return.

VoyageHacks last verified the dates, routes and fare snapshots on this page on 16 August 2026.

How these numbers were checked

No lab, no claimed test trips. Festival dates come from the Drik Panchang Hindu calendar for November 2026. The booking window comes from Google’s published holiday travel dataset. Nonstop carriers, block times and baggage rules were read from live Expedia availability for 5 to 22 November 2026 on 16 August 2026, cross-checked against FlightConnections route data and against each airline’s own route announcements where one exists. Every price below is a single dated snapshot for one adult in economy, not an average, and it will move.

When is Diwali 2026, and which days actually peak?

Diwali is the five day festival of lights that closes the Hindu lunar month of Kartika, and the main day is Lakshmi Puja. In 2026 that day is Sunday 8 November.

DayDate 2026What it means for flights
DhanterasFriday 6 NovemberLast realistic arrival day for most families
Naraka ChaturdashiSunday 8 NovemberObserved as the holiday in some states
Diwali, Lakshmi PujaSunday 8 NovemberThe day itself, and the cheapest day to be in the air
Govardhan PujaMonday 9 NovemberIndia is largely shut, domestic flights are full
Bhai DoojTuesday 10 NovemberSecond wave of internal travel

The outbound crush is the run of days from about Tuesday 3 November to Saturday 7 November, because nobody wants to arrive after Dhanteras. The return crush is spread wider: the weekends of 14 to 15 and 21 to 22 November, once relatives have done Bhai Dooj and the school half term is over.

One honest caveat on the date. A few Indian states keep the holiday on Naraka Chaturdashi rather than Lakshmi Puja, so a cousin in one state may be celebrating on a different day from a cousin in another. Confirm with the household you are flying to before you book anything non-refundable.

When should you book flights to India for Diwali 2026?

There is no published Diwali-specific booking-window study, and we are not going to invent one. The closest real dataset is Google’s, and it is a US-market measurement, so treat it as a floor rather than gospel for a London or Toronto departure.

Google analysed average round-trip airfares on Google Flights from 1 January 2021 to 1 August 2025, for 4 to 16 day trips departing the top 4,000 US markets. Its international finding: the lowest prices have been 49 days or more before departure.

Map that onto this festival and you get two dates:

  • Departing Thursday 5 November 2026, the 49 day mark is 17 September 2026.
  • Departing Sunday 8 November 2026, it is 20 September 2026.

Today is 16 August 2026, which is 81 to 84 days out. You are early, and early is the correct side of that line to be on. What you should not do is treat late October as “still fine”. By then the cheap fare buckets on the peak days are gone, and a fare bucket that closes does not reopen because you waited.

Two things change the deadline for the worse:

  • Thin routes. A city pair with one carrier flying three or four times a week has a fraction of the cheap seats of Heathrow to Delhi. Decide on those in early September.
  • Fixed dates. If you cannot move by a day in either direction, you are buying scarcity, and scarcity gets more expensive every week.

If you want the general mechanics of fare buckets and price alerts, our guide to how to find cheap flights covers them, and when to book Christmas flights applies the same published windows to the December peak.

Which airlines fly nonstop to India, and from where?

This is the table nobody publishes honestly, because the network changed in 2025 and 2026 and a lot of guides still list routes that no longer operate. Everything below was checked on 16 August 2026. Frequencies move, so confirm with the airline before you plan around one.

Dubai to DelhiAir India, Emirates, flydubai, IndiGo, SpiceJetAbout 3h 40m88 flights a weekLatest safe deadline of any route here

Three findings from that table are worth pulling out, because they change plans:

  • The US nonstop map has shrunk to two airports. New York JFK and Newark carry every nonstop to India in this search. If you are flying from Chicago, Washington or San Francisco, you are connecting whether you like it or not, so price the connection properly instead of hunting a direct that is not there.
  • Manchester has exactly one nonstop to India, IndiGo to Mumbai, four times a week. For Delhi you go via Heathrow, a Gulf hub or Europe.
  • Gatwick matters if your family is in Gujarat, Punjab, Goa or Kerala. Air India serves Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa and Kochi from Gatwick, not Heathrow, and travellers routinely search the wrong London airport.

Cheapest days to fly around Diwali 2026

Here is the single most useful thing on this page. We held everything constant except the outbound date: same carrier, same flight number, same return flight on 22 November, same Economy Value fare family, same taxes of US$485. Searched 16 August 2026, London Heathrow to Delhi, one adult.

OutboundDayAirline fareTotal with taxesVersus 5 November
Thursday 5 NovemberPeak outbound waveUS$513US$998Baseline
Saturday 7 NovemberPeak outbound waveUS$416US$87412% cheaper
Sunday 8 NovemberDiwali dayUS$224US$70929% cheaper

The airline’s own fare more than halved between the Thursday and Diwali day, from US$513 to US$224. Taxes did not move at all, which is what tells you this is demand pricing rather than a different routing.

That is one snapshot on one route, not a dataset, so pair it with the published pattern. Google Flights measures Monday to Wednesday departures at about 13% below weekend departures year round, and a layover at about 22% below a nonstop. Around a Sunday festival the calendar overrides the weekday rule, because the shoulder day is the holiday itself.

Ranked cheapest first for Diwali 2026, on the evidence above:

  1. Sunday 8 November, the day itself. You lose the evening, not the festival, if you land before Lakshmi Puja.
  2. Monday 9 to Tuesday 10 November, arriving for Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj rather than the main night.
  3. Tuesday 3 to Wednesday 4 November, early enough to sit outside the crush and still inside the Google weekday pattern.
  4. Avoid Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November unless you have no choice, and avoid the return weekends of 14 to 15 and 21 to 22 November.

Should you fly Air India for Diwali?

Air India is the only carrier in the table above that flies nonstop from all four of London, New York, Toronto and Sydney to Delhi, which on this festival is a real advantage rather than a marketing line. Its entry-level Economy Value fare also included a 23 kg checked bag on every search we ran, where two rivals charged for the first one.

The honest caution is fleet consistency, and the fare family trap: Value gives you one bag where Classic gives you two, and on a route where everyone travels heavy that second bag is often worth more than the fare gap. Our full Air India review has the punctuality data, the cabin split by aircraft type and the excess-baggage pricing.

Direct or one-stop through the Gulf?

The received wisdom is that Emirates and Qatar Airways always undercut the nonstops. On these dates, they did not. Same search, 16 August 2026, London Heathrow to Delhi, out 5 November and back 15 November, one adult in economy, cheapest fare offered per carrier.

ItineraryFare familyTotalJourney time out and backFree checked bag
Qatar Airways via DohaEconomy ConvenienceUS$1,12411h 45m out, 21h 20m back30 kg
British Airways nonstopBasic EconomyUS$1,1318h 35m out, 9h 55m backNone. First bag priced at about US$280
Air India nonstopEconomy ValueUS$1,1339h 40m out, 11h 10m back23 kg
Emirates via DubaiEconomy SaverUS$1,27412h 50m out, 29h 25m back25 kg
Virgin Atlantic nonstopEconomy LightUS$1,3128h 40m out, 10h 05m backNone. First bag priced at about US$200

Read that table twice. The Gulf saving over a nonstop was about US$7, and it bought a 17 hour layover in Dubai or a 9 hour one in Doha on the way home. The cheapest headline fare, British Airways at US$1,131, becomes the second most expensive option the moment you add one suitcase.

So the real decision is not direct versus one-stop. It is fare family versus baggage, and at Diwali almost nobody flies light.

  • Take the nonstop if you are travelling with family, with gifts, or on fixed dates. Air India and Virgin Atlantic reach Delhi from Heathrow in under nine hours; the Emirates itinerary above took 29 hours coming home.
  • Take the Gulf connection if you want the bigger allowance, you can absorb a long layover, or your Indian city has no nonstop. Qatar Airways and Emirates both reach far more Indian airports than either London carrier.
  • Check the fare family before the airline. Our British Airways review explains what Basic Economy strips out on long haul.

What Diwali week is actually like on the ground

Practical prep, each of which has its own guide: the India visa rules , an India eSIM so you land connected instead of queueing for a local SIM with your passport, and realistic India trip costs for the week itself. If you are landing into the two big hubs, our Delhi and Mumbai guides cover arrival, transport and where to base yourself.

What can go wrong, and what to do

  • The peak-day fare sells out while you think about it. This is the normal failure, not the exception. Airlines file a ladder of fare buckets per cabin, each with a fixed seat count, and a closed bucket does not reopen. If your dates are locked to 5 to 7 November, the decision is now.
  • Your flight is delayed or cancelled on the way out. A departure from a UK airport is covered by UK261 regardless of the airline’s nationality, which sets fixed compensation bands by distance for qualifying delays, cancellations and denied boarding. Expect the airline to argue extraordinary circumstances for weather.
  • It happens on the way home instead. A flight leaving India on a non-UK, non-EU carrier is outside UK261 and EU261. The Montreal Convention governs the journey instead, with no fixed sums for passenger delay, so keep every receipt.
  • You split the ticket to save money. Two one-ways from different airlines can genuinely beat a round trip, but neither airline owes you the other’s flight. At Diwali, leave hours of slack or buy one through-ticket.
  • You are pricing one-ways because the round trip looks brutal. Compare properly. A one-way plus a one-way on the same carrier is frequently more than the round trip on long-haul India routes, which is the opposite of the intra-Europe pattern.
  • You have miles and are not using them. Award seats on India routes at Diwali go early, and Air India sits in Star Alliance while British Airways sits in Oneworld, so check both programmes before you pay cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Diwali 2026?

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. The five day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November, with Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November. Some Indian states observe the public holiday a day earlier on Naraka Chaturdashi, so confirm the date your own family keeps before you fix your flights.

When should you book flights to India for Diwali?

Google Flights measured the lowest international fares at 49 days or more before departure, which means booking by roughly 20 September 2026 for a Sunday 8 November arrival. Thin routes served by one carrier three or four times a week deserve an earlier decision, because their cheapest fare buckets sell out first and do not reopen.

Which airlines fly nonstop from London to India?

From London Heathrow, Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop to Delhi and Bengaluru, Air India and British Airways serve Mumbai, and British Airways alone serves Hyderabad and Chennai. Air India flies London Gatwick to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa and Kochi. IndiGo also operates Delhi to Heathrow, and is the only nonstop from Manchester to Mumbai.

Is it cheaper to fly to India via the Gulf?

Not automatically. In a VoyageHacks search on 16 August 2026 for London to Delhi on 5 to 15 November 2026, the cheapest Qatar Airways itinerary via Doha came to about US$1,124 against US$1,131 for a British Airways nonstop, and Emirates via Dubai cost more than either. The Gulf fares did include a larger free checked bag.

What are the cheapest days to fly around Diwali?

Diwali day itself. In a live search on 16 August 2026 for London to Delhi returning 22 November, the same Air India nonstop cost about US$998 leaving Thursday 5 November, US$874 on Saturday 7 November and US$709 on Sunday 8 November. Google Flights also measures Monday to Wednesday departures at about 13% below weekend ones.

Book the Date, Not Just the Ticket

Two decisions carry almost all the money here. Buy by around 20 September 2026, and fly out on Sunday 8 November instead of the Thursday before if your family can spare you for the morning. On the route we tested, that second choice alone was worth 29%.

Next steps: browse the flights hub for route guides, read the Air India review before you pick a fare family, see how the same booking windows behave over Christmas , plan the trip itself from the India destination guide , check what else is in season in where to go in November , and line up a room from the hotels hub once the flight is locked.
