Airlines With Free Stopover Programs: The Short Answer

You are already flying through Dubai, Istanbul or Lisbon anyway. The airline priced the connection into your ticket, and a handful of carriers will pay for you to actually leave the airport: a hotel night, meals, transfers, sometimes a visa, all included.

The catch is that every program hides behind qualification rules that are easy to fail by accident. Book two separate tickets, pick the wrong connection length, or forget to apply 72 hours out, and the free hotel evaporates. How the Free Stopover Programs Compare

One pattern to notice before the detail: the free-hotel programs (Emirates, Turkish, Ethiopian) cap out at 26 hours to 7 days, while the free-stay programs without a hotel (TAP, Icelandair) run to 10 days or more. Free accommodation buys you a night or two; free flexibility buys you a week.

Emirates Dubai Connect: Free Hotel, Strict Rules

Dubai Connect is the most generous package on this list and the strictest to qualify for. Emirates includes a complimentary hotel stay with applicable meals, coach transfers to and from the hotel, and a complimentary 48-hour UAE visa.

The qualification rules, from Emirates’ own terms:

• The connection in Dubai must be at least 6 hours and at most 26 hours.
• The whole itinerary must be a single booking on one ticket issued on an Emirates (176) document. Separate tickets do not qualify.
• It applies only when no shorter connection was available to choose at booking. Deliberately picking a longer routing to trigger the free hotel does not work.
• Request it at least 12 hours before your inbound flight lands in Dubai, via Manage Your Booking, an Emirates office or a travel agent.
• Travellers under 18 qualify only together with a passenger over 18. On arrival, report to the Dubai Connect desk in Arrivals.

Two fine-print points matter. Visa-required nationalities should prearrange the visa at least 48 hours before arrival, and UAE immigration keeps full discretion, so some passport holders cannot be processed at all (Dubai Connect is then automatically unavailable). And the hotel tier follows the cabin you hold as of 12 hours before departure, so a last-minute upgrade does not upgrade the hotel.

Ideal connection time: aim for an overnight connection of around 14 to 20 hours, comfortably inside the 6–26 hour window, so there is time to check in, sleep and clear security again without rushing. Turkish Airlines: Free Hotel Plus Free Tours, Two Separate Programs

Turkish Airlines runs two distinct transit products through Istanbul Airport, and travellers regularly confuse them. They have different connection windows and different application rules.

Stopover in Istanbul (the free hotel): Economy passengers get 1 complimentary night at a 4-star partner hotel, Business passengers get 2 nights at a 5-star property. The rules:

• International-to-international connection through Istanbul Airport (IST) on Turkish Airlines.
• Minimum voluntary layover of 20 hours, maximum up to 7 days, chosen deliberately at booking (a long layover is not enough on its own).
• Eligibility also depends on your country of departure against Turkish Airlines’ eligible-countries list, so check it before booking.
• After ticketing, apply through the airline’s stopover tool with your surname and ticket number, or by email, at least 72 hours before departure. Miss that window and the request is forfeited.

Touristanbul (the free tours): on international connections of 6 to 24 hours, Turkish Airlines offers a free organised city tour of 4 to 8 hours including the airport shuttle, an English-speaking guide, meals (with vegetarian and vegan options) and museum entry. It is entirely free, and there is no paid option for passengers whose connections fall outside the window.

Visas are the easy part here: US, EU, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders enter Turkey visa-free or with a low-cost e-Visa for stays up to 90 days.

Ideal connection time: for the free hotel, around 24 to 30 hours clears the 20-hour minimum with one full overnight. Qatar Airways: Cheap Rather Than Free

Qatar’s headline stopover is honest about being a product, not a perk. The Qatar Stopover program sells bookable packages in Doha with hotels from around $14 per person per night, which is a steep discount rather than zero cost.

There are four tiers: Standard (4-star), Premium (choice of 5-star), Premium Beach (5-star plus Doha Sands Beach Club access) and Luxury (top-tier 5-star with breakfast). Packages run 1 to 3 nights on connections of 12 to 96 hours, booked with the flight or added later via Manage Booking. Qatar Airways also runs Discover Qatar, its in-house tour operator for transit passengers, for city and desert tours.

Visas rarely block the plan: 102 nationalities enter Qatar visa-free, others use a visa on arrival (QAR 100) or the online Hayya visa, and several packages require a confirmed hotel booking as part of the visa application.

TAP Air Portugal: Up to 10 Days in Lisbon or Porto, Free

TAP’s Stopover is the most flexible program on this list. On a cash fare (one-way, round-trip or multi-city) routing through Lisbon or Porto, you can break the journey for up to 10 days at no extra airfare, on the outbound, the return, or both legs of a multi-city trip.

What you need to know:

• Cash fares only: award tickets are excluded, per secondary guides (TAP’s own page does not state the exclusion explicitly, so treat it as likely rather than certain).
• The option surfaces as an “Add a free Stopover” pop-up during booking on eligible flights, and can also be added via the TAP App or Contact Center.
• Secondary guides put the minimum connection at around 24 hours or more; TAP’s own page confirms the 10-day ceiling but not the floor, so verify the minimum in the T&Cs at booking.
• No hotel and no visa product are included. This is free flexibility, not free accommodation.

The sweeteners are real, though: 25% off any onward TAP flight within Portugal during the stopover window (Lisbon or Porto to Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Funchal, Porto Santo and Faro, plus Faro to Funchal; non-transferable, one booking, not combinable with other promotions), and access to 500+ partner discounts of up to 50% across accommodation, dining, activities, museums and tours.

Saudia: A Free 96-Hour Visa, Umrah Included

Saudia’s stopover is different in kind: it is a free transit eVisa, issued in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Saudia booking flow, rather than a hotel package.

The rules are short:

• Open to travellers of all nationalities with a valid passport.
• The layover must be between 12 and 96 hours, flying Saudia’s own connecting flights (secondary guides also name Flynas as eligible).
• The eVisa allows up to 96 hours in-country, issued against a 90-day validity window for use.
• Umrah is explicitly permitted: stopover-visa holders may perform Umrah in Mecca or visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, but registration through the official Nusuk platform first is mandatory, not optional.

No hotel is included, so budget your Jeddah or Riyadh stay separately.

Also Worth Knowing: Icelandair, Ethiopian and Singapore Airlines

Icelandair allows a free stopover of up to 7 days in Iceland on transatlantic itineraries connecting via Keflavik (KEF), with some Flex fares extending that to 21 days. No hotel is included, and the network covers 21+ onward European destinations including London, Paris and Amsterdam.

Ethiopian Airlines runs the most automatic free-hotel program of all. On international-to-international connections of 8 to 24 hours through Addis Ababa (ADD) on a single Ethiopian ticket (any cabin, cash or award), the airline includes a hotel night (commonly the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, though the specific property is not guaranteed), breakfast and dinner, transfers and a transit visa. No advance request is needed: vouchers are issued at check-in, and since 1 January 2025 the old form-stamping requirement is gone. If vouchers do not appear, go to the transit desk in Addis Ababa. Outside the 8–24 hour window, Ethiopian sells paid tours and a paid Skylight package instead.

Singapore Airlines sells a paid stopover holiday via Changi (SIN): the Basic Singapore Stopover Holiday package has started from around S$63 per person, including one hotel night, a one-way airport transfer and dining and shopping deals. Even on a short connection, Jewel Changi (the shopping and entertainment complex inside the airport) is worth the walk.

If Something Goes Wrong: Compensation on a Stopover Itinerary

A stopover itinerary is still one ticket, so the usual protections apply to the flights around it. EU261 covers flights departing an EU airport on any airline (and EU-carrier arrivals into the EU): EUR 250 for flights up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights of 1,500–3,500 km, and EUR 600 over 3,500 km, triggered by cancellations or arrival delays of 3+ hours that are the airline’s fault. That matters for TAP departures from Lisbon or Porto and for any Emirates, Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines flight leaving an EU airport.

UK261 mirrors the same scheme for flights departing the UK, paid in pounds (around GBP 220 short-haul, rising to around GBP 520 long-haul depending on the delay). The US has no equivalent cash-compensation mandate, so delays through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Jeddah, Addis Ababa or Singapore on a non-EU/UK itinerary fall back on each airline’s own policy. Baggage is separate again: under the Montreal Convention, which all these carriers operate under, delayed or lost baggage liability is capped around 1,288 Special Drawing Rights, roughly USD 1,700 to 1,900 depending on exchange rates.
