Qatar is a small peninsula with one big city, and nearly every trip starts and ends in Doha at Hamad International Airport. The real choices are timing, because the heat decides what you can do outdoors, and how to fit the visit around a flight: a long weekend, or a stopover on the way to Asia, Africa or Australia. All prices and rules below were checked on 9 October 2026.
Qatar weather month by month
The figures are the Qatar Meteorology Department’s long-term averages for Doha, as published on the WMO World Weather Information Service.
| Month | Doha high / low | Rain | Rain days | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 21.7°C / 12.8°C | 13.2 mm | 1.7 | Coolest month, desert trips, long walks |
| February | 23.0°C / 13.7°C | 17.1 mm | 2.1 | Wettest month, still mostly dry |
| March | 26.8°C / 16.7°C | 16.1 mm | 1.8 | Warm beach days, last of the cool season |
| April | 31.9°C / 20.6°C | 8.7 mm | 1.4 | Hot afternoons, early starts |
| May | 38.2°C / 25.0°C | 3.6 mm | 0.2 | Heat returns, indoor sightseeing |
| June | 41.2°C / 27.7°C | 0 mm | 0 | Very hot, malls and museums |
| July | 41.5°C / 29.1°C | 0 mm | 0 | Hottest month |
| August | 40.7°C / 28.9°C | 0 mm | 0 | Very hot and humid |
| September | 38.6°C / 26.5°C | 0 mm | 0 | Still summer heat |
| October | 35.2°C / 23.4°C | 1.1 mm | 0.1 | Hot days, cooler evenings |
| November | 29.5°C / 19.5°C | 3.3 mm | 0.2 | Season starts, motorsport weekends |
| December | 24.1°C / 15.0°C | 12.1 mm | 1.3 | Ideal city and beach weather |
The pattern is simple. From November to March the days are warm rather than hot and the evenings are cool enough for a jacket in January; from May to September the afternoons are too hot for most outdoor sightseeing. Rain is rare in any month. Pack sun protection all year, and one warm layer for desert nights in winter.

Best time to visit Qatar by trip type
City break and museums (November to March)
Winter is when Doha is easiest to walk. The Corniche is a 7 km waterfront path, and the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif and the National Museum of Qatar are all close to it. Our Doha city guide covers where to stay, the metro from the airport and what each museum costs.
Desert and the Inland Sea (November to March)
The desert in the south-east, where the dunes meet the sea at Khor Al Adaid (the Inland Sea), is a cool-season trip. Discover Qatar, the destination company of Qatar Airways, runs a 4-hour Desert and Inland Sea private tour from around QAR 227 per person with five in a vehicle, and a 6-hour Sunrise in the Desert trip from around QAR 320. In summer, go at sunrise or not at all.
Sports weekends (November)
Qatar hosts two big motorsport weekends in late 2026: the MotoGP Grand Prix of Qatar on 6 to 8 November and the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix on 27 to 29 November. Hotels fill and prices rise around both, so book early or plan around them.
Summer (May to September)
Summer is the cheapest time for hotels, and Doha still works if you live indoors: museums, malls, the metro and hotel pools are all air-conditioned. Treat anything outdoors as an early-morning or after-dark plan.
How much does Qatar cost per day?
Qatar is not a budget destination, but public transport and museums are cheap. In a Booking.com check on 9 October 2026, four-star hotels on the Corniche and in the Old Town started at around 60 to 85 euros a night for two for a mid-January weekend, with a large airport-area chain hotel from around 50 euros; West Bay’s five-star towers cost far more. The riyal is pegged at 3.64 to the US dollar, so QAR 50 is about 14 dollars.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Doha Metro, one day of standard travel | at most QAR 6 |
| Museum of Islamic Art, non-resident adult | QAR 50 (students QAR 25) |
| National Museum of Qatar, non-resident adult | QAR 25 |
| Children 16 and under at Qatar Museums sites | free |
| Discover Doha 4-hour city tour (Discover Qatar) | from around QAR 146 per person |
| Dhow sunset cruise, 2 hours (Discover Qatar) | from around QAR 150 per person |
| Visa on arrival or Hayya tourist visa, where required | QAR 100 |
| Qatar Stopover hotel packages (Qatar Airways Holidays) | from USD 14 per person |
Where to go in Qatar
Doha is the capital and where almost everyone stays: give it two or three days. Al Wakrah, at the southern end of the Doha Metro Red Line, has a restored old souq on the beach. Lusail, at the northern end of the same line, is the new city around Lusail Stadium and its marina. Khor Al Adaid is the Inland Sea, a desert and dune landscape in the far south-east reached by 4x4 tour. Al Zubarah in the north-west is Qatar’s UNESCO World Heritage site, a ruined pearling town with a restored fort; Qatar Museums sells tickets for the site and the fort together, and warns that there is little shade.
How to get around Qatar
Doha Metro. Three lines (Red, Green and Gold) meet at Msheireb in central Doha, and the Red Line runs from Hamad International Airport into the city and on to Lusail and Al Wakrah. Visit Qatar says a day of travel costs at most QAR 6, children under 5 ride free, and trains run about every 6 minutes, with closures on Friday mornings for prayers. Lusail has its own tram, and the Msheireb Tram downtown is free.
Taxis and ride-hailing. Turquoise Karwa taxis, run by the state company Mowasalat, wait at the Taxi Pavilion at the left end of the airport arrivals hall and take cards and phone payments; Uber also operates. Outside Doha there is little public transport, so the desert and Al Zubarah are easiest on a tour or in a rental car.
Entry rules, stopovers and dress code
Visa-free entry. Visit Qatar says citizens of more than 100 countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and EU countries, can enter visa-free. The passport must be valid for at least three months from arrival and visitors must hold a confirmed hotel booking; the length of stay depends on your nationality, and US citizens get a multiple-entry permission with stays of up to 90 days. Other nationalities apply for a Hayya A1 tourist visa online, and some can get a visa on arrival for QAR 100. A separate Qatar-Oman joint tourist visa, issued on arrival, covers 30 days in both countries for citizens of a listed set of countries. GCC residents use the Hayya A2 visa.
Stopovers. Qatar Airways Holidays sells Qatar Stopover packages from USD 14 per person, with up to four nights in a four or five-star hotel when the Doha transit lasts 12 to 96 hours. On shorter layovers of at least 6 hours, Discover Qatar’s Transit Exclusive tours of Doha start from QAR 115 per person, and Qatar Airways passengers who are not visa-free can apply for a transit visa at the Discover Qatar Transit Desk in the airport. Our Qatar Airways review explains the airline’s separate free-hotel rules, and the airline stopover programs guide compares Qatar Airways’ options with the other airlines’ programs.
Dress code and etiquette. Visit Qatar asks both men and women to avoid excessively revealing clothing in public and recommends covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection are discouraged. During Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking in public in daylight hours is considered disrespectful, and opening hours change, so check the dates before you book.
Money, plugs and time. The Qatari riyal is pegged at 3.64 to the US dollar; ATMs are common and cards are widely accepted. Sockets are the UK-style Type G at 240 V, so see our travel adapters by country guide. Qatar is on GMT+3 all year, and Friday is the main weekly rest day.

Qatar or Dubai?
Both are winter-sun cities with the same season, November to March. Doha is smaller, quieter and easier to see in two or three days, with world-class museums and a compact old centre around Souq Waqif. Dubai is bigger, with more beaches, theme parks and hotel choice. Our Dubai guide covers the same months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Qatar?
November to March is the best time to visit Qatar. Qatar Meteorology Department averages for Doha give highs of about 29.5°C in November, 24.1°C in December and 21.7°C in January, warm enough for the beach and cool enough to walk the Corniche and Souq Waqif. From May to September highs pass 38°C and reach about 41.5°C in July, so summer trips revolve around air-conditioned malls and museums.
Do I need a visa to visit Qatar?
Citizens of more than 100 countries can enter Qatar visa-free, according to Visit Qatar, the national tourism board. The passport must be valid for at least three months from arrival and visitors must hold a confirmed hotel booking. Nationalities that are not visa-free apply for a Hayya A1 tourist visa online, and some can instead get a visa on arrival for a QAR 100 fee after booking a hotel through Discover Qatar.
What should tourists wear in Qatar?
Visit Qatar asks men and women to avoid excessively revealing clothing in public and recommends keeping shoulders and knees covered. Light, loose clothes that cover both work well in malls, souqs and museums. Keep swimwear for the beach or the hotel pool.
Can I do a stopover in Doha?
Yes. Qatar Airways Holidays sells Qatar Stopover packages from USD 14 per person, with up to four nights in a four or five-star hotel when the Doha transit lasts 12 to 96 hours. On shorter layovers of at least 6 hours, Discover Qatar runs Transit Exclusive tours of Doha from QAR 115 per person, and travellers who are not visa-free can get a transit visa at its desk in Hamad International Airport.
What currency does Qatar use?
Qatar uses the Qatari riyal (QAR), which is pegged at 3.64 riyals to the US dollar. ATMs are easy to find in Doha and cards and contactless payments are widely accepted. Visit Qatar notes that many restaurants already add a service charge, and a tip of 10 to 15% is appreciated when it does not.
How many days do you need in Qatar?
Two to four days covers Qatar for most visitors. Spend one day on the Museum of Islamic Art, the Corniche and Souq Waqif, one on the National Museum of Qatar and a dhow cruise, and add a half-day desert trip to the Inland Sea. Al Zubarah, the UNESCO World Heritage site in the north-west, is worth a fourth day.
Start planning your Qatar trip
November to March is high season, and the motorsport weekends in November push Doha hotel prices up, so book the room as soon as your dates are set. If you are flying on to Asia or Australia anyway, price a Doha stopover against a direct flight first.
