Quick Answer

Edinburgh is worth a winter trip if you come for lights and festivities rather than sunshine. Edinburgh’s Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a free-to-enter market of around 70 stalls in East Princes Street Gardens, a Big Wheel and an undercover ice rink on George Street. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay opens with the Torchlight Procession on 29 December 2026 and peaks on 31 December with the Street Party and the Midnight Moment fireworks beneath the castle. Pack for cold, dark days: the Met Office’s 1991-2020 normals give December highs of about 7°C and around 13 rainy days. Stay in the Old Town or the New Town to walk everywhere, or in Leith for lower prices on the tram line. The airport tram reaches the centre in about 30 minutes for around £7.90 onboard, Edinburgh Castle costs £23.50 online, and three days covers the main sights.

Edinburgh in winter is a compact, hilly city with a castle on a volcanic rock, a medieval Old Town on one side of Princes Street Gardens and a Georgian New Town on the other. UNESCO lists both together as the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, inscribed in 1995. The trip comes down to three choices: which dates (Christmas season or Hogmanay), which base, and how much of the short daylight you spend indoors. Dates and prices below were checked on 8 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Edinburgh?

May to September gives the longest days and the mildest weather. Mid-November to early January is the festive season, and the main reason to come in winter.

MonthAverage high / low (°C)Rain days (≥1 mm)Sunshine (hours a month)Best for
November9.5 / 3.612.967Christmas season opens 14 November
December7.0 / 1.413.138Christmas market, Hogmanay
January6.9 / 1.513.347Quiet streets, lower hotel prices
February7.5 / 1.610.778Museums and walks

July19.4 / 11.011.4161Warmest; summer festival crowds
October13.2 / 6.513.094Autumn colour, wettest month (83 mm)

Figures are the Met Office’s 1991-2020 normals for Edinburgh Gogarbank, by the airport. The city gets around 784 mm of rain a year spread across about 137 rainy days, so the issue in winter is drizzle and early darkness more than snow. December averages only about 38 hours of sunshine in the whole month: plan the castle and outdoor viewpoints for late morning and keep museums for the afternoon. Edinburgh at Christmas and Hogmanay: what is on in 2026?

Edinburgh’s Christmas (14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027) spreads across three sites, according to Forever Edinburgh, the city’s official visitor site:

  • West Princes Street Gardens: the family funfair, Santa’s Stories and festive food stalls.
  • George Street: an undercover ice rink, so it runs whatever the weather.

Rides, the rink and Santa’s Stories need their own tickets, sold on the official Edinburgh’s Christmas site.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is the city’s New Year festival. The official 2026/27 programme lists:

Where should you stay in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is small enough that the right area is mostly about walking distance and price.
