Quick Answer

The best time to visit the UK is May to September, when the Met Office’s 1991-2020 normals give London (Heathrow) highs of about 18 to 24°C and Edinburgh about 15 to 19°C, with long evenings for sightseeing. June is the best all-round month. For a winter city break, go from mid-November to early January: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Edinburgh’s Christmas from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Winter is mild but damp, with December highs around 9°C in London and 7°C in Edinburgh. Most visitors, including EU, US, Canadian and Australian citizens, need a £20 ETA from GOV.UK before they travel. LNER trains link London and Edinburgh in around 4 hours 8 minutes. A first trip of 7 to 10 days covers London plus Edinburgh or a couple of day trips; London alone needs 4 to 5 days.

The UK is not a sunshine destination, so the month you pick decides two things: how many hours of daylight you get, and how often you will be indoors. Summer gives you the longest days and the busiest sights; late autumn and winter give you Christmas lights, shorter queues and wetter streets. The UK by trip type

Christmas in London and Edinburgh (mid-November to early January)

British Christmas markets are smaller than German or Austrian ones, but the season is long and the cities go all in on lights, ice rinks and concerts. In London, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day, with timed entry tickets booked in advance. Visit London lists the Southbank Centre, Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square as the central markets, most of them free to walk into. Our London guide has the dates, the ticket prices and where to stay for them.

In Scotland, Edinburgh’s Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the city centre, according to Forever Edinburgh, the city’s official visitor site. For how these compare with Vienna, Prague and the German markets, see the Christmas markets 2026 guide. The markets are about food, crafts, lights and music, so dress for long evenings outside: a packable down jacket, waterproof winter boots and a compact travel umbrella cover most British winter weather.

Summer (June to September)

Summer is when the countryside is at its best: the Lake District, the Cotswolds and the Scottish Highlands, where the long northern evenings stretch your day. It is also the busiest and priciest season, with school holidays filling July and August and Edinburgh’s summer festivals filling the city in August. September keeps most of the warmth (London averages highs of about 20°C) with fewer crowds.

Spring and autumn shoulder seasons

April, May and October are good value. May is one of the drier months in both cities, and October brings autumn colour but more rain, about 11 rainy days in London and 13 in Edinburgh.

How much does a day in the UK cost?

The UK is expensive, London most of all, but transport caps and free national museums keep sightseeing costs in check.

Entry rules, money and staying connected

Entry: the UK is not in the Schengen area, so days here do not count towards the Schengen 90/180 rule. Instead, most visitors who do not need a visa need a UK ETA: GOV.UK says it costs £20 and allows visits of up to 6 months at a time. EU citizens have needed one since 2 April 2025. Our UK ETA guide covers who is exempt, how to apply in the app and the transit rules. Apply only on GOV.UK or the official app; copycat sites charge more.

Money: the UK uses the pound sterling. Contactless payment is accepted almost everywhere. When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in pounds.

Data: a travel eSIM gets you online on landing; check that the plan you pick lists the UK as a covered country. See the best eSIM for Europe.

What is the best month to visit the UK?

June is the best all-round month: Heathrow averages highs of about 22°C and Edinburgh about 17°C, according to the Met Office’s 1991-2020 normals, with the longest days of the year. May and September are close behind and usually cheaper. For Christmas lights and markets, go from mid-November to early January.

Is the UK worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for cities. London averages December highs of about 9°C and Edinburgh about 7°C, and both run big Christmas events: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Edinburgh’s Christmas from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Days are short and often wet, so plan museums for the afternoons.

Do I need an ETA to visit the UK?

Most visitors who do not need a visa do need an ETA, including citizens of the EU, the USA, Canada and Australia. GOV.UK says it costs £20 and lets you visit for up to 6 months at a time. Irish citizens and anyone who already holds a UK visa or permission to live, work or study in the UK do not need one.

How cold is the UK in winter?

Mild but damp. The Met Office’s 1991-2020 normals give Heathrow highs of about 8 to 9°C and lows of about 3°C from December to February. Edinburgh is colder, with highs around 7°C and lows around 1.5°C, and about 13 rainy days a month in winter.

How do I get from London to Edinburgh?

The train is the easiest way. LNER runs 29 direct trains each weekday from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, taking around 4 hours 8 minutes on the fastest services. LNER advertises fares from £41.40 when you book three weeks ahead, and a Railcard takes about a third off most fares.

What currency does the UK use, and are cards accepted?

The UK uses the pound sterling. Contactless cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, including on London’s buses, Tube and trains, where Transport for London caps what you pay each day. If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in pounds: the rate it applies is usually worse.
