Zermatt sits at the end of a valley in the canton of Valais, at around 1,600 metres, with the Matterhorn filling the view from almost every street. No private cars are allowed, the trains run to the village centre, and the lifts climb to nearly 4,000 metres, which is why it is a winter destination as much as a summer one. It is also one of the most expensive places to stay in the Alps. Prices, dates and fares below were checked on 10 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Zermatt?
December to April is for skiing; July to September is for hiking and the clearest high-mountain views. November and late April to June are the quiet shoulder months, when some lifts and hotels close.
| Month | Average high / low (MeteoSwiss) | Sunshine | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 5.1°C / -3.1°C | 89 h | Ski season opens on the 1st, mainly on the glacier |
| December | 1.5°C / -6.3°C | 83 h | Village skiing gets going; festive weeks book out |
| January | 0.8°C / -7.4°C | 94 h | The coldest month, about 13 days that stay below freezing |
| February | 1.7°C / -7.3°C | 109 h | Cold, brighter, school-holiday crowds |
| March | 5.7°C / -4.0°C | 151 h | Long sunny days, still full winter on the slopes |
| April | 9.8°C / -0.7°C | 147 h | Spring snow; Sunnegga-Rothorn closes 11 April 2027 |
| July to August | about 20°C / 8°C | 176 to 185 h | Peak hiking season |
| September | 15.4°C / 5.0°C | 156 h | Settled weather, fewer people |
Figures are MeteoSwiss 1991-2020 normals for the Zermatt station at 1,638 metres. The village is fairly dry for the Alps, with around 640 mm of precipitation a year, and January brings frost on about 31 nights. Up on the glacier it is much colder and windier, so pack for it: our guides to thermal base layers, heated gloves, packable down jackets and winter boots cover what works.

Zermatt Bergbahnen calls the linked area the Matterhorn Ski Paradise: 360 km of pistes and 52 lifts across Switzerland and Italy, peaking near 4,000 metres, with skiing on the glacier 365 days a year.
| Pass (winter 2026/27) | Price from | What it covers |

- Children: under 9 ski free, ages 9 to 15 pay 50%, and on Saturdays the Zermatt pass is free for children up to 15.
- Prices start at those floors and Zermatt Bergbahnen advertises “book early and save”, so buy online once your dates are fixed.

Where should you stay in Zermatt?
The village is small and walkable, but it climbs uphill from the station, and lift stations sit at different ends. Pick the end that matches your days.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Around the station and Bahnhofstrasse | Arriving with luggage, the Gornergrat railway opposite the station | Busiest streets, few quiet views |
| Village centre (Hinterdorf, old chalets) | Walking to restaurants and the church square | Steep lanes, mixed noise |
| South end (Steinmatte, Matte) | The Matterhorn Express towards Glacier Paradise and Schwarzsee | A long walk back up to the station |
| Wiesti and Winkelmatten | Quieter streets, Matterhorn views, Sunnegga funicular | Uphill walks, fewer shops |
| Täsch | Lower rates, parking, 12 minutes away by shuttle train | You commute every day; evenings are quiet |
Swiss prices apply in full here. A Booking.com search on 10 October 2026 for a mid-January weekend returned two-night totals for two adults from around CHF 400, which included the youth hostel, to well over CHF 1,100 at boutique hotels. Festive weeks and February school holidays cost more and sell out first. Compare Zermatt hotel prices for your dates before you settle on an area.
How do you get to Zermatt and around it?
Zermatt is car-free, so the last part of every journey is by train.
Switzerland is not in the EU, but it is a Schengen associated state, so the Schengen 90/180-day rule applies, and the State Secretariat for Migration says the EU Entry/Exit System has been in use across the Schengen area since 12 October 2025. Pay in Swiss francs; cards work almost everywhere.

What should you not miss in Zermatt?
| Sight | Cost | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Gornergrat railway, about 3,100 m | CHF 102 return in winter, CHF 132 in summer | Half price with a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass; views of the Matterhorn and 28 four-thousand-metre peaks |
| Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, 3,883 m | From CHF 120 in the 2026 summer season | Europe’s highest mountain station; the ticket includes the Glacier Palace and the viewing platform |
| Rothorn | Lift ticket or ski pass | Zermatt Bergbahnen calls it “surely the best view” of the Matterhorn |
| Schwarzsee | From CHF 33 in winter | A lift stop right below the Matterhorn, open to walkers in winter |
| Village walk and the Matterhorn views | Free | Go early on a clear morning, before cloud builds on the peak |
- Gornergrat closure: the railway is shut from 2 to 14 November 2026 for construction work, then runs every 48 minutes until 27 November and every 24 minutes from 28 November.
- Children on the glacier: under-3s are not allowed above Trockener Steg, on health grounds.
- The Matterhorn’s history: Edward Whymper’s party made the first ascent on 14 July 1865, and four of the seven died on the descent; the mountain still sees around 2,500 to 3,000 ascents a year.
Eating out is expensive. Supermarkets near the station sell good bread, cheese and ready meals, and a mountain restaurant lunch of rösti or soup is the treat worth paying for.
What day trips can you take from Zermatt?
- Cervinia, Italy, on skis: with the International pass you can ski across the border via the Testa Grigia area and back in a day. Watch the clock and the wind forecast: the link runs over the high lifts, so leave plenty of time to get back.
- Täsch and the valley: an easy trip by shuttle train for cheaper shopping.
- Zurich: if you are flying in or out, consider a night in Zurich on the way; it is about three and a quarter hours away by train, so a same-day return from Zermatt makes little sense.
What can go wrong in Zermatt?
- Wind closes the high lifts. The Glacier Paradise and the Italian link close in strong wind, so keep a lower-altitude plan, and check the lift status before you leave.
- Altitude. At 3,883 metres some people get headaches or feel short of breath. Go up slowly, drink water, and come down if you feel unwell.
- The November gap. The Gornergrat is closed from 2 to 14 November 2026, and early in the season much of the skiing is on the glacier only.
- The cost creep. Lift passes, rentals and lunches add up fast. Book passes online, rent only what you cannot bring, and buy food at the supermarket.
- Short days. In December and January the sun leaves the valley floor early; plan sightseeing for the morning.
How many days do you need in Zermatt?
Two days covers the Gornergrat, the Glacier Paradise and the village. A ski trip needs four to six days to cover the Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat and Glacier Paradise sectors plus a day in Cervinia.
