Quick Answer

The best time to visit Sweden depends on the trip. For long days, archipelago boats and the warmest weather, go from June to August: SMHI’s 1991-2020 normals give Stockholm a July average high of 23.5°C, and at midsummer the sun is up from about 03:30 to 22:08. For the northern lights, head to Swedish Lapland between mid-November and mid-March, the best window according to the Swedish Tourist Association, which runs the Aurora Sky Station above Abisko. For Christmas, Skansen’s market in Stockholm opens on weekends from 27 November to 20 December 2026. A Stockholm winter is cold but manageable, with December averaging a high of 2.4°C and about six hours of daylight. Sweden uses the Swedish krona, not the euro, and is close to cashless: only 5% of people paid cash for their last shop purchase in 2025, according to the Riksbank. Fly into Stockholm Arlanda, where Arlanda Express reaches the city in 18 minutes for 340 SEK.

Sweden is two winter trips and one summer trip in a single country: a capital on the water with Christmas markets and museums, an Arctic north with auroras and an ice hotel, and long, light summers on the coast and in the archipelago. The decisions that matter are the month, the region and how you cover the distances. Every price and date below was checked on 9 October 2026.

The figures are SMHI’s 1991-2020 normals for Stockholm (Observatoriekullen) and for Abisko, in Swedish Lapland north of the Arctic Circle.

Daylight changes more than temperature. On 21 December 2026 the sun is up in Stockholm only from about 08:43 to 14:48, and in Kiruna it does not rise at all from around 11 December to 2 January, on the Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s sunrise data. Abisko is also dry: SMHI’s normals give it about 347 mm of precipitation a year, around two-thirds of Stockholm’s.

Northern lights in Swedish Lapland (mid-November to mid-March)

The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) says the northern lights can be seen in Abisko from late August to April, with the best chance from mid-November to mid-March. Its Aurora Sky Station sits at about 900 metres on Mount Njullá in Abisko National Park, overlooking Torneträsk lake. A chairlift from a base station ten minutes’ walk from STF Abisko Turiststation takes about 30 minutes to the top; for winter 2026-27 the chairlift ticket costs from 260 SEK and a night visit from 1,295 SEK. Abisko owes its reputation to what STF calls the blue hole, a local weather pattern that often keeps the sky clear when the surrounding area is cloudy.

ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi

ICEHOTEL, 17 kilometres east of Kiruna along the E10, is rebuilt every winter from Torne River ice, and its solar-cooled ICEHOTEL 365 keeps ice suites open all year at a steady minus 5°C. Day visitors buy tickets on site with no pre-booking: 325 SEK for adults, 225 SEK for students and seniors and 39 SEK for children aged 4 to 12, for the season running from 13 April to December 2026. The venue is cash-free. The new winter building, ICEHOTEL 37, opens for the 2026-27 season, and overnight guests get entry included.

Christmas and Lucia (late November to December)

Stockholm is the place for a Swedish Christmas. Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, holds its Christmas market on Fridays to Sundays from 27 November to 20 December 2026, and Gamla Stan’s long-running market fills Stortorget, the old town’s main square, in the weeks before Christmas. On 13 December, Lucia brings candlelit processions and saffron buns (lussekatter). In Gothenburg, the Liseberg amusement park turns into a Christmas market with stalls and lights. Our Stockholm guide has the details, and the Christmas markets 2026 guide compares Europe’s market cities.

Summer and the archipelago (June to August)

Summer is Sweden at its easiest: July averages 23.5°C in Stockholm, the archipelago boats run their full timetables, and in Lapland the sun barely sets. It is also when hotels in the cities are most in demand, so book early for midsummer weekends.

Getting around Sweden

Entry rules, money and staying connected

Entry: Sweden is in the EU and the Schengen area, so non-EU visitors count their days under the Schengen 90/180 rule, and are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System at the border; our EES and ETIAS guide explains both.

Money: Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK), not the euro, and it runs almost entirely on cards. In the Riksbank’s 2025 survey only 5 per cent of people paid cash for their last purchase in a shop, while cards, including phone wallets, made up around 92 per cent. Some places, among them the Vasa Museum and ICEHOTEL, take no cash at all. Bring a contactless card with no foreign transaction fee, and when a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in kronor.

What to pack for a Swedish winter: Stockholm calls for grip and layers rather than expedition kit: winter boots, a thermal base layer and a packable down jacket. For aurora nights in Lapland, add heated gloves.
