Tenerife is two islands in one. The south coast is dry, sunny and lined with resorts; the north is green, misty and far more Canarian. Spain’s highest mountain sits between them. Get the side right and a December week here feels like early summer. Prices and rules below were checked on 4 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Tenerife?
October to May, if you are chasing winter sun. Summer is the warmest and driest time, but it is also when the rest of Europe is warm too. The thing most first-timers miss is how different the north and south are on the same day.
| Month | South: high / low, rain (Tenerife South airport) | North: high / low, rain (Tenerife North airport) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 21.7 / 15.2°C, 17 mm | 16.0 / 10.2°C, 80 mm |
| February | 22.0 / 15.0°C, 20 mm | 16.7 / 10.0°C, 70 mm |
| March | 23.1 / 15.6°C, 15 mm | 18.2 / 10.7°C, 61 mm |
| April | 23.1 / 16.0°C, 7 mm | 18.5 / 10.9°C, 39 mm |
| May | 23.9 / 17.0°C, 1 mm | 20.1 / 12.0°C, 19 mm |
| June | 25.4 / 18.8°C, 0 mm | 22.2 / 14.0°C, 11 mm |
| July | 27.7 / 20.2°C, 0 mm | 24.7 / 15.7°C, 6 mm |
| August | 28.4 / 21.1°C, 1 mm | 25.7 / 16.6°C, 5 mm |
| September | 27.9 / 21.1°C, 4 mm | 24.9 / 16.5°C, 16 mm |
| October | 26.8 / 20.0°C, 12 mm | 22.5 / 15.2°C, 47 mm |
| November | 24.8 / 18.2°C, 26 mm | 19.6 / 13.3°C, 81 mm |
| December | 22.8 / 16.5°C, 30 mm | 17.1 / 11.5°C, 82 mm |
Figures are AEMET’s 1981-2010 averages. The south logs around 2,700 hours of sunshine a year. The north airport sits inland at La Laguna, so the coast at Puerto de la Cruz runs a little milder, but the cloud pattern holds. Teide itself is a different climate again: pack a warm layer for the national park, which sits above 2,000 m. For how Tenerife compares with other options, see our winter sun in Europe guide.
Where should you stay in Tenerife?
Your base decides your weather, so choose it before the hotel.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Adeje | Beaches, resort hotels, families | Built-up and pricier; little local character |
| Playa de las Américas | Beaches, value, everything walkable | Busy resort strip with late-night noise in parts |
| Los Cristianos | A real town with a beach, ferry port, buses | Crowded seafront in peak season |
| Los Gigantes / Puerto de Santiago | Cliff views, quieter, near Masca | Small beaches, steep streets |
| Puerto de la Cruz | Traditional town, green north, cheaper rooms | Cooler and cloudier in winter |
| Santa Cruz / La Laguna | City life, culture, food markets | Not a beach base; rainier in winter |
First winter trip? Stay in the south: Los Cristianos if you want a working town, Costa Adeje if you want resort comfort. Choose Puerto de la Cruz only if you value the north’s landscapes over guaranteed sun.
How do you get to and around Tenerife?
Tenerife has two airports. Most international flights, including the winter charters, use Tenerife South, close to the southern resorts. Tenerife North at La Laguna handles mostly inter-island and Spanish domestic flights. Compare routes in our cheap flights from London to Tenerife guide.
What are the top things to do in Tenerife?
| Sight | Cost (October 2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Teide cable car | 42 euros return (non-resident adult), 21 euros child 3 to 13 | Runs 9:00 to 17:00 from late October; goes early before cloud and queues |
| Teide summit, trail 10 (Telesforo Bravo) | 15 euros for non-residents, booked on Tenerife ON | Permit needed for the final climb to 3,718 m; bookings cannot be changed |
| Montaña Blanca trail 7 to La Rambleta | 6 euros weekdays, 10 euros weekends | The full hike up, without the cable car |
| Masca Gorge | From about 41 euros, booked on the official site | Descent of about 4 hours; boat out is compulsory and extra |
| San Cristóbal de La Laguna | Free to walk | UNESCO-listed colonial old town since 1999 |
| Anaga Rural Park | Free | Laurel-forest ridge walks above the north coast |
- Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site (2007). UNESCO puts the Teide-Pico Viejo volcano at 3,718 m, the highest point in Spain. Driving through the lava fields and stopping at the Roques de García viewpoint costs nothing; the fees above apply only to the cable car and the two summit trails.
- Santa Cruz has the island’s busiest food market, the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, a good place for papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, local cheeses and tropical fruit.
- The Los Gigantes cliffs drop straight into the sea on the west coast; boat trips leave from the marina.
Day trips from Tenerife
- La Gomera: ferries leave from Los Cristianos, which makes a quiet green island an easy day out from the south.
- The north loop: La Laguna, the Anaga mountains and Puerto de la Cruz in a day by car.

What can go wrong in Tenerife?
- Booking the wrong side of the island. A cheap room in the north in January can mean 16°C and drizzle while the south is in the low 20s. Check the town, not just “Tenerife”.
- Arriving at Teide without a permit. The cable car does not take you to the crater. The summit trail needs a Tenerife ON permit, and slots sell out; confirmed bookings cannot be changed or cancelled except for weather or a cable car closure.
- Wind and ice close the cable car. It shuts in bad weather. Keep a flexible day and check the operator before driving up.
- Masca without the boat. The gorge is descent only and ends at the sea; book the boat transfer when you book the trail.
- Altitude. The upper cable car station is at 3,555 m. Go slowly and skip it with heart or breathing problems.
- Entry rules. Tenerife follows Spain’s Schengen rules, and the EU’s Entry/Exit System registers non-EU passports at the border. See our EES and ETIAS guide.

How many days do you need in Tenerife?
Five to seven days is the sweet spot: two or three beach days in the south, one for Teide, one for La Laguna and Santa Cruz, and one for Masca or Anaga. A long weekend works for pure sun plus one Teide trip. Our Spain budget guide covers daily costs, and the best time to visit Spain guide puts the Canaries in context with the mainland.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tenerife warm in winter?
The south is. AEMET’s normals for Tenerife South airport show average highs of about 22 to 23°C from December to February, with lows around 15 to 16°C and only 17 to 30 mm of rain a month. The north is cooler and wetter: Tenerife North airport averages highs of about 16 to 17°C and 70 to 82 mm of rain a month in the same period. For guaranteed winter sun, stay in the south.
Should I stay in the north or south of Tenerife?
Stay in the south (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas or Los Cristianos) for sunshine, beaches and the closest airport, Tenerife South. Choose Puerto de la Cruz in the north for a greener, more traditional town and cheaper rooms, accepting cooler, cloudier weather in winter. Santa Cruz and La Laguna suit a city-and-culture trip rather than a beach holiday.
How much does it cost to go up Mount Teide?
The Teide cable car costs 42 euros return for a non-resident adult and 21 euros for a child aged 3 to 13, according to the operator. The cable car stops below the crater. To walk the last stretch to the 3,718 m summit on trail 10 (Telesforo Bravo) you need a permit from the Cabildo’s Tenerife ON platform, which since 19 January 2026 costs non-residents 15 euros.
How do I get from Tenerife South airport to the resorts?
TITSA bus line 111 stops at Tenerife South airport on its run between Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje, calling at Los Cristianos, and runs roughly every 30 minutes. Pay by bank card or cash, or buy a ten+ tourist card at the airport machines: 10 euros for one day or 50 euros for seven days of unlimited bus and tram travel.
Do you need to book the Masca gorge hike?
Yes. Access to the Masca Gorge trail must be booked in advance on the official caminobarrancodemasca.com site, from about 41 euros. It is a descent of about four hours that ends at the sea, and the boat out is compulsory and booked separately. Since December 2025 hikers reach the trailhead on TITSA bus 355 from Santiago del Teide.
How many days do you need in Tenerife?
Five to seven days is a good length: two or three beach days in the south, one day for Teide National Park, one for La Laguna and Santa Cruz, and one for Masca or the Anaga mountains. A long weekend works if you only want sun and one Teide trip.
