Craiova is the biggest city in Oltenia, in south-western Romania, about 209 km west of Bucharest by rail. For most of the year it is a quiet regional city with a fine art museum and one of the largest parks in the country. From mid-November it turns into one of the most talked-about Christmas destinations in Europe. Dates and prices below were checked on 29 October 2026; our Romania country guide covers entry rules, money and the rest of the country.
When is the Craiova Christmas market 2026?
Craiova City Hall’s participation rules for traders put the 2026 Christmas Market from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It runs through the central zone in three parts: Piața Mihai Viteazul and Strada Unirii; Piața William Shakespeare, Piața Frații Buzești and the Doljana area; and the streets around Strada Theodor Aman. The theme for 2026 is Tărâmul elfilor, the Land of the Elves. Set-up started early: Calea Unirii, the pedestrian spine of the centre, has been closed to traffic for the installation since 15 October.
Stalls trade from 13:00 to 21:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00 to 22:00 Friday to Sunday, according to the city’s rules for traders, so a weekday afternoon is the calm time and weekend evenings are the busiest. The selected traders, published by the city on 16 October, run food stalls, sweets and gingerbread, cozonac (sweet bread) and handmade crafts.
Why the ranking? European Best Destinations’ 2026 vote drew 803,258 votes from 179 countries, and put Craiova first. The ranking site describes it as the largest Christmas event in Europe by surface, more than 280,000 square metres. A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

The Jean Mihail Palace holds Romanian and European collections and the city’s prize: early sculptures by Constantin Brâncuși, who studied at Craiova’s School of Arts and Crafts from 1894 to 1898. The museum counts a version of The Kiss as the centrepiece of its Brâncuși collection.
