Zakopane is the town at the foot of the Tatras, the only truly alpine mountains in Poland, and in winter it does three jobs at once: ski base, mountain-walk base and a highlander town with wooden villas and smoked cheese on every corner. The trade-off is crowds. Half of Poland seems to arrive in February, and the one road in from Kraków shows it. Prices, timetables and closures below were checked on 29 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Zakopane?
For snow, late December to March. For hiking, June to September, though July is also the wettest month. The table uses IMGW-PIB’s 1991-2020 normals for the Zakopane station (857 m) and, for the summit, Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 m), rounded.
| Month | Zakopane average high / low | Kasprowy Wierch high / low | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 2°C / −6°C | −4°C / −9°C | Ski season starting, Christmas crowds |
| January | 1°C / −7°C | −5°C / −10°C | Coldest month, ferie from 18 January |
| February | 2°C / −6°C | −5°C / −11°C | Peak school-holiday month |
| March | 5°C / −4°C | −3°C / −9°C | Long days, spring snow up high |
| July | 21°C / 11°C | 12°C / 6°C | Hiking season, wettest month (about 190 mm) |
| August | 21°C / 11°C | 12°C / 6°C | Hiking season, busy trails |
Kasprowy Wierch averages about 6 to 9°C colder than town, and in winter it is a different climate: wind, fog and snow can close the summit while Krupówki is sunny. The Kasprowy runs have no snowmaking, so an early-December trip depends on how the winter starts. If your dates are fixed, January to mid-March is the safer bet.
Polish winter school holidays (ferie zimowe) 2027 come in three waves: 18 to 31 January, 1 to 14 February (including Warsaw’s region) and 15 to 28 February (including Małopolska, Zakopane’s own region). That makes the whole six weeks busy, with longer queues at Kuźnice and higher room prices. Early January after New Year and the first half of March are the calmer winter windows.

25 x 18 x 4 cm, 254 g, 2.1 L. Locking zips, a cut-resistant double-cable strap, an RFID passport pocket and a strap that clips to a chair. Reader’s Digest’s best crossbody for travel.

A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

The town is spread out along the valley, and where you sleep decides how much time you spend in traffic.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Krupówki and the centre | First visits, walking to restaurants, the Gubałówka funicular and the bus station | The busiest and noisiest part of town |
| Towards Kuźnice (Bystre, Jaszczurówka side) | Early starts on the Kasprowy cable car and the trails from Kuźnice | Quieter evenings, a bus or taxi into the centre |
| Gubałówka, Kościelisko and Polana Szymoszkowa | Views of the Tatras, wooden guesthouses, small ski slopes | You need transport to Kuźnice and the centre |
| Białka Tatrzańska | Ski-first trips on a larger groomed area | A drive from Zakopane itself and the Tatra trails |
First time in winter? Stay near Krupówki or a short walk from it, and take a bus or taxi to Kuźnice on cable-car mornings. Compare Zakopane hotel and guesthouse prices for your exact dates before you commit: the ferie weeks, Christmas and New Year fill first. Kraków itself is a fine base for a day trip but makes the cable car a very long day; see our budget hotels in Kraków if you are splitting the trip.
How do you get to Zakopane?
The nearest airport is Kraków (KRK). There is no direct rail link from the airport to Zakopane, so you go through Kraków.
What should you not miss in Zakopane?
| Sight or activity | Price (checked 29 October 2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Kasprowy Wierch cable car | 129 zł return, adults 27 to 64, until 18 December 2026 | 4,261 m, 20 minutes to 1,987 m; buy online |
| Gubałówka funicular | 37 zł return online, 42 zł at the desk (low season) | 1,301 m, 3.5 minutes, views over the Tatras |
| Tatra National Park entry | 11 zł, reduced 5.50 zł, 7 days 55 zł | Buy online, at entry points or by QR code |
| Morskie Oko | Park entry, plus parking from 36 zł online | 8 km road from Palenica Białczańska |
| Krupówki | Free | The main street, busiest in the evening |
Kasprowy Wierch. The cable car runs from Kuźnice to the summit at 1,987 m in about 20 minutes, in 60-person cabins every 10 minutes (every 30 minutes in poor weather and low demand). PKL closes it for its annual inspection from 19 October to 6 November 2026; from 7 November it runs 8:00 to 16:00, last ride up at 14:00, and return tickets stop selling two hours before the last ride. In the low season to 18 December, a return is 129 zł for ages 27 to 64 and 109 zł for ages 5 to 26 and 65+, and an express Tourpass with a reserved time is 159 zł. Winter prices from 19 December were not published on 29 October 2026. In summer 2026 online prices ran 99 to 165 zł depending on the hour, so expect peak-time slots to cost more.
Gubałówka. The funicular starts a short walk from Krupówki and climbs 1,301 m of track in 3.5 minutes to the ridge facing the Tatras. Up top there is a 300 m ski slope with a drag lift, a tubing run and a 700 m summer slide. It is the easiest view in town, and it works when the high mountains are in cloud.
Morskie Oko in winter. The lake is reached from Palenica Białczańska (990 m), more than 20 km from Zakopane, on an asphalt road of about 8 km. TPN plans 2.5 hours each way and at least 7 hours for the trip. Its e-buses are suspended in winter. Horse-drawn wagons wait at Palenica and run to Polana Włosienica; that is a fact of the route, not a recommendation, and walking is the alternative. Official TPN parking is sold online at 36 to 75 zł per car depending on the day, and on busy days it sells out: if the website shows nothing left, there is nothing on site either. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park.
Eat at a karczma (highlander inn) for hearty mountain food, and try oscypek, the smoked sheep’s cheese of the Polish highlands.
Where can you ski near Zakopane?
| Ski area | What it is | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Kasprowy Wierch (PKL) | The high-mountain runs: Kocioł Gąsienicowy 1,200 m, Kocioł Goryczkowy 2,100 m, a 3,500 m ski road from Hala Goryczkowa | No snowmaking, no floodlights; chairlifts 1,155 m and 1,736 m long |
| Gubałówka (PKL) | A 300 m slope and snow park on the ridge above town | A short slope, reached by funicular |
| Białka Tatrzańska | A larger area of groomed, chairlift-served runs (Kotelnica, Kaniówka, Bania) | A short drive east of Zakopane |
PKL’s 2026/27 season pass covers Kasprowy Wierch, Gubałówka, Palenica, Mosorny Groń and Jaworzyna Krynicka. Pass holders still reserve a seat on the Kasprowy cable car, 45 zł online. For a week of skiing, compare Zakopane with Bansko and the rest of our cheapest ski resorts in Europe.
What can go wrong in Zakopane in winter?
- Avalanches and winter trails. In the Polish Tatras trails stay open in winter, and the decision to go is yours. Above the mountain huts you need crampons, an ice axe and avalanche gear (transceiver, probe, shovel), plus the skills to use them. Read the TOPR avalanche bulletin (a five-level scale) every morning, and hire a mountain guide if that is beyond you.
- Seasonal trail closures. From 1 December to 15 May, TPN closes the Morskie Oko to Świstówka to Five Polish Ponds trail, the Czerwone Wierchy trail from Dolina Tomanowa to Chuda Przełączka, and the Giewont trail from Przełęcz w Grzybowcu to Przełęcz Kondracka Wyżnia. On the Slovak side, trails above the huts are closed from 1 November to 31 May.
- The November gap. The Kasprowy cable car is shut until 6 November 2026, and natural snow on the high runs may not arrive until well into December.
- Ferie crowds. From 18 January to 28 February 2027, queues at Kuźnice, traffic on the Kraków road and room prices all peak. Buy cable-car tickets online and book rooms early.
- Fake parking tickets. TPN warns that some websites sell “Morskie Oko parking” that is not the official park parking. Buy only through tpn.gov.pl.
- Activate before you fly: data works on arrival
- Plans for 200+ countries from a few dollars
- Keep your number; no physical SIM swap
How many days do you need in Zakopane?
Three to five days. Day one: Krupówki and the Gubałówka funicular. Day two: Kasprowy Wierch, on skis or just for the view. Day three: Morskie Oko, a full day. Add one or two days for skiing at Białka Tatrzańska or a gentle forest walk, such as the Wierch Poroniec to Rusinowa Polana route that TPN suggests for winter beginners. Most visitors combine Zakopane with Kraków: three or four days in the city for the Christmas market and Wieliczka, then the mountains.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Kasprowy Wierch cable car in 2026/27?
In the low season from 1 October to 18 December 2026, a return ticket costs 129 zł for adults aged 27 to 64 and 109 zł reduced (ages 5 to 26 and 65+), online or at the ticket machines, according to Polskie Koleje Linowe (PKL). An express Tourpass with a booked time slot costs 159 zł return. PKL had not published winter prices from 19 December on 29 October 2026.
Is the Kasprowy Wierch cable car open in November?
Not at the start of the month. PKL closes it for its annual technical inspection from 19 October to 6 November 2026. From 7 November it runs 8:00 to 16:00, with the last ride up at 14:00. Cabins leave every 10 minutes, or every 30 minutes in poor weather and low demand, and the 20-minute ride climbs to 1,987 m.
Can you visit Morskie Oko in winter?
Yes. The route from Palenica Białczańska is an 8 km asphalt road, about 2.5 hours each way, and the Tatra National Park (TPN) says to allow at least 7 hours for the trip. Park entry costs 11 zł. TPN’s e-buses are suspended in winter, so walk or take the horse-drawn wagons to Polana Włosienica. Check the TOPR avalanche bulletin first.
How do I get from Kraków to Zakopane?
PKP Intercity runs direct trains, and its fastest EIP Pendolino did the trip in 1 hour 57 minutes on the 2025/26 timetable; other trains take longer. Private coaches and minibuses take about 2 to 3 hours. From Kraków Airport, take the Koleje Małopolskie train to Kraków Główny first, about 20 minutes for 20 zł.
Is Zakopane good for skiing?
It is good for a short ski trip, not a big Alpine week. Kasprowy Wierch has the high runs, 1,200 m and 2,100 m long, with no snowmaking or floodlights, so they depend on natural snow. Gubałówka has a short 300 m slope, and the larger groomed area at Białka Tatrzańska is a short drive east. PKL’s 2026/27 season pass costs 2,499 zł until 30 November.
When are Polish winter school holidays in 2027?
Ferie zimowe 2027 run in three waves: 18 to 31 January (Silesia, Lower Silesia, Łódź, Opole, Podkarpackie and Podlaskie), 1 to 14 February (Mazowieckie with Warsaw, Pomorskie, Świętokrzyskie and Lubelskie) and 15 to 28 February (Małopolskie, Wielkopolskie and four more regions). Zakopane is busiest across all six weeks, so book rooms early or come in early January or March.
Start planning your Zakopane trip
If a ski package already bundles your flight, transfer and room, you don’t need this part. If you are booking the pieces yourself, price a flight to Kraków and a room for an early-January week against a February one first: the cable car costs the same, the room does not.
