Warsaw is the capital that most visitors to Poland skip on the way to Kraków, and that is a mistake for anyone interested in the 20th century. The Old Town looks medieval but was rebuilt brick by brick after 1944, and the city’s two big history museums are among the best in Europe. The questions that decide the trip are the month, the district and which free museum day you build around. Prices and dates below were checked on 10 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Warsaw?
Warsaw has a continental climate: warm summers, cold winters and its heaviest rain in July. The table rounds IMGW-PIB’s 1991-2020 normals for the Warszawa station.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1°C / -4°C | 31 mm | Lowest prices, Christmas market into early January |
| February | 3°C / -3°C | 30 mm | Quiet museum break |
| March | 7°C / -1°C | 29 mm | Few crowds, the first mild days |
| April | 15°C / 4°C | 35 mm | Spring in the parks |
| May | 20°C / 9°C | 56 mm | Walking weather, green Łazienki Park |
| June | 23°C / 12°C | 64 mm | Long evenings along the Vistula |
| July | 25°C / 15°C | 82 mm | Warmest month, also the wettest |
| August | 25°C / 14°C | 61 mm | Summer holidays, warm evenings |
| September | 19°C / 10°C | 50 mm | Warm days, thinner crowds |
| October | 13°C / 5°C | 40 mm | Autumn colours, cheaper hotels |
| November | 7°C / 1°C | 36 mm | Christmas market opens late in the month |
| December | 2°C / -3°C | 36 mm | Market, lights, short cold days |
Warsaw Old Town Christmas market
The main market sits on the strip between the Old Town walls by the Barbican, right next to Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy). In the 2025/2026 season it ran from 21 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, organised by Jarmarki Rzemiosłem Zdobione, open from 11:00 to 20:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 21:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, with free entry. The 2026 dates had not been published when we checked on 10 October 2026, so confirm them before you book around a specific weekend.
- What to buy: handicrafts, decorations and food gifts from the craft stalls along the walls.
- What to eat: pierogi, grilled oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese from the Tatras) and gingerbread, with a hot chocolate in your hands.
- What to pair it with: an evening walk along the Royal Route, Krakowskie Przedmieście, from Castle Square towards Nowy Świat.
December highs average about 2°C and nights drop below freezing, so winter boots, a packable down jacket and thermal base layers make a long evening outdoors far more comfortable; our Christmas market packing list has the rest. Where should you stay in Warsaw?
Warsaw is spread out, so your base matters more than in Kraków. The Old Town and the Royal Route run north to south along the west bank of the Vistula; the business centre and the main station sit to the west of them, and Praga lies across the river.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town and New Town | The Christmas market, the Royal Castle, evening walks | Tourist prices, few big hotels |
| Royal Route (Krakowskie Przedmieście, Nowy Świat) | Walking to the Old Town and the cafés | Busy on weekends, rooms fill early in December |
| Around Warszawa Centralna (Śródmieście) | Trains, the airport link, modern hotels, the Palace of Culture | Less character, busy main roads |
| Praga | Lower prices, a more local feel | Tram or metro ride to the Old Town |
First visit, especially in December? Stay on the Royal Route or by the Old Town and walk. Arriving and leaving by train, or heading on to Kraków? A hotel near Warszawa Centralna saves time. On a budget, Praga stretches the money further.

Warsaw Chopin Airport is inside the city, with its own underground railway station. Warsaw Modlin Airport, used mainly by low-cost airlines, is about 40 km north of the centre and is not served by city transport: use Koleje Mazowieckie trains to Modlin station or the direct shuttle buses.

The Historic Centre of Warsaw has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1980. According to UNESCO, more than 85% of it was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, and the Old Town you walk through today is the result of a near-total reconstruction by its citizens after the war. Seeing that first makes the Warsaw Rising Museum hit harder: it covers the fighting and daily life during the Uprising, alongside the occupation terror that preceded it. The POLIN Museum tells a thousand years of Jewish life in Poland.
Plan around the free days. POLIN and the Rising Museum are both free on Thursdays, and the Royal Castle on Wednesdays, when a limited number of free tickets are handed out at the castle ticket office on the day for a shorter route (no Matejko rooms, Porcelain Gallery or Parliamentary Chambers). The castle is also closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 and 6 January, which catches out Christmas visitors.
Eat at a milk bar. A bar mleczny is a no-frills canteen serving Polish home cooking (pierogi, soups, pancakes, cutlets) at low prices, a holdover from the subsidised canteens of the communist era. You order at the counter, read the menu board in Polish and collect your plate at the hatch. It is the cheapest sit-down meal in the city and a slice of everyday Warsaw.
What can go wrong in Warsaw?
- Choosing your home currency at the card machine. Poland uses the złoty, not the euro. When a terminal or cash machine offers to charge you in your own currency, decline and pay in złoty: that conversion rate is usually worse than your bank’s.
- Turning up on a closed day. The two big museums close on Tuesdays and the Royal Castle on Mondays. Check the holiday closures before Christmas and Epiphany.
- Booking Modlin without checking the transfer. Modlin is 40 km out and not on city transport, so allow extra time and money compared with Chopin Airport.
- Forgetting to validate. A bought ticket is not valid until you validate it on the first ride or at the metro gate.
- Underestimating the cold. December and January nights average below freezing.

How many days do you need in Warsaw?
Two to three days is right for a first visit. Day one: the Old Town, the Royal Castle and an evening on the Royal Route. Day two, ideally a Thursday: the Warsaw Rising Museum in the morning and the POLIN Museum in the afternoon. Day three: Praga, Łazienki Park or the Palace of Culture viewing terrace. Then take the train south to Kraków for three or four more days, or continue to Prague, Vienna or Budapest. For the rest of the country, see our best time to visit Poland guide.

For a winter city break, go from late November to early January for the Old Town Christmas market and lights; December averages about 2°C by day and below freezing at night.
When is the Warsaw Old Town Christmas market?
The 2026 dates had not been published on 10 October 2026. In the 2025/2026 season the market ran from 21 November 2025 to 6 January 2026 along the Old Town walls by the Barbican, next to Castle Square, with free entry. Where should I stay in Warsaw for the first time?
Stay in or near the Old Town and the Royal Route (Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat) to walk to the Royal Castle, the Christmas market and most sights. The area around Warszawa Centralna station is better for trains, the airport link and modern hotels. Praga, across the Vistula, is cheaper and more local, a short tram or metro ride from the centre.
How do I get from Warsaw Chopin Airport to the city centre?
Take the SKM S2 or S3 train, or the Koleje Mazowieckie RL train, from the station under the terminal, or bus 175. A standard 75-minute public transport ticket costs 4.40 zł and covers the trip; buy it from machines at the station entrance, on the train or in the app. Chopin Airport puts the journey to the Centrum stop at about 30 minutes.
Which Warsaw museums are free and on which days?
The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Rising Museum are both free on Thursdays and both closed on Tuesdays. The Royal Castle is free on Wednesdays on a shortened route, with a limited number of free tickets handed out at the castle ticket office on the day, and it is closed on Mondays.
How many days do you need in Warsaw?
Two to three days covers Warsaw well: one for the Old Town, the Royal Castle and the Royal Route, one for the Warsaw Rising Museum and the POLIN Museum, and one for Praga, Łazienki Park or the Palace of Culture and Science viewing terrace. Kraków is a little over 2 hours away by PKP Intercity train, so the two cities pair easily.
