Quick Answer

The best time to visit Kraków is May to September, when IMGW-PIB’s climate normals put average highs at about 20 to 25°C, with June and September less crowded than high summer. For a winter city break, the Christmas market on the Main Market Square runs from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to the City of Kraków’s listing for the organiser ARTIM, with free entry. Stay in the Old Town to walk everywhere, or in Kazimierz for better value about 15 minutes away on foot. From Kraków Airport, the Koleje Małopolskie train reaches the main station in about 20 minutes for 20 zł. Plan three to four days: one for the Old Town and Wawel Castle (95 zł for both castle floors), one for Kazimierz, one for the Wieliczka Salt Mine and one for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, where entry is free but must be booked online. Kraków is worth it in any season, but winter evenings are cold.

Kraków is compact, mostly flat and one of the best-value city breaks in Central Europe. The questions that decide the trip are the month, the district you sleep in and how you fit Wieliczka and Auschwitz-Birkenau around three or four days in the city. Kraków Christmas market 2026

The market fills the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to the City of Kraków’s Kraków Card listing for the organiser ARTIM. The organiser’s earlier call for traders gave 3 or 6 January as the closing date, so check before planning around the last days. The 2026 hours are not out yet; in 2025 the stalls opened daily from 10:00 to 21:00 and the food stalls until 22:00, as listed by Karnet Kraków.

  • What to buy: in 2025 there were 105 stalls of Christmas decorations, ceramics, leather goods, jewellery and souvenirs around the Cloth Hall.
  • What to eat: pierogi, grilled oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese from the Tatras), obwarzanek bread rings and Polish sweets, with a hot chocolate to warm your hands.
  • What to see: the lit tree, a carved wooden nativity scene and a carousel in 2025, and by tradition the city’s szopka makers bring their glittering nativity scenes to the square on the first Thursday of December, which is 3 December in 2026.

Entry is free. Weekday mornings are the calmest; evenings and weekends get packed, so keep your bag in front of you: a crossbody bag helps. With December highs around 3°C, winter boots, a packable down jacket and thermal base layers make a long evening outdoors much easier; our Christmas market packing list has the rest. The Historic Centre of Kraków was among the first places on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Start at the Main Market Square, where a trumpet call sounds from the tower of St Mary’s Basilica every hour, walk down Grodzka street to Wawel, then cross into Kazimierz. Wawel’s castle exhibitions sell tickets for set entry times, so buy them online before a December weekend. In Podgórze, the Schindler’s Factory branch of the Museum of Kraków tells the story of the city under German occupation in World War II.

Day trips from Kraków

  • Wieliczka Salt Mine (UNESCO-listed): take the Koleje Małopolskie train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka. The guided Tourist Route lasts about 2 hours, or about 3 with the Cracow Saltworks Museum, and involves more than 800 steps. Tours in English cost around 122 to 139 zł depending on the season.
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial: the site of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp in Oświęcim, roughly 70 km west of Kraków, preserved by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. Entry to the grounds is free with a personalised entry pass booked only on visit.auschwitz.org, released 90 days ahead from noon. During the busiest hours, entry is only possible with a guide-educator; the general guided tour lasts about 3.5 hours with a headset and covers Auschwitz I and Birkenau, for a fee of roughly 140 to 150 zł under the 2026 price list. Allow a full day, dress for standing outdoors in the cold, and plan nothing demanding afterwards.
  • Zakopane and the Tatras: about 2 to 3 hours by bus to Poland’s mountain resort, for snow in winter and hiking in summer. See our Poland guide for the season.

What can go wrong in Kraków?

  • Choosing your home currency at the card machine. Kraków uses the Polish złoty, not the euro. Whenever a card terminal or cash machine offers to charge you in your own currency, decline and pay in złoty, because that conversion rate is usually worse than your bank’s.
  • Booking Auschwitz-Birkenau through a random reseller. The museum’s only booking system is visit.auschwitz.org, and it warns visitors to be cautious about outside tour offers.
  • Arriving at Wawel without a ticket on a busy day. Entry slots sell out; book online and note that the castle closes on 1 and 11 November.
  • Squeezing Wieliczka and Auschwitz-Birkenau into one day. It is possible on a coach tour, but rushed; give each its own day.
  • Underestimating the cold. December averages about 3°C by day and below freezing at night.

Where should I stay in Kraków for the first time?

The Old Town (Stare Miasto) puts you within walking distance of the Main Market Square and Wawel, at the highest prices. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish district south of the Old Town, is about 15 minutes on foot from the square and has better value and the best café and food scene. Podgórze, across the Vistula, is quieter and usually cheaper still.

How do I get from Kraków Airport to the city centre?

The Koleje Małopolskie train runs from the station at Kraków Airport to Kraków Główny, the main station next to the Old Town, in about 20 minutes. A single ticket costs 20 zł and can be bought from machines on the train, at the platform ticket point or online.

How do I visit Auschwitz-Birkenau from Kraków?

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is in Oświęcim, roughly 70 km west of Kraków, so allow a full day. Entry is free with a personalised entry pass booked only on visit.auschwitz.org, released 90 days ahead. During the busiest hours, entry is only possible with a guide-educator; the general guided tour lasts about 3.5 hours and covers both Auschwitz I and Birkenau.

How many days do you need in Kraków?

Three to four days covers Kraków well: one day for the Old Town and Wawel, one for Kazimierz and Podgórze, and one each for the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Do the two day trips on separate days, since Auschwitz-Birkenau needs a full day and is a heavy experience.
