Valkenburg aan de Geul is a small town in South Limburg, in the hilly far south of the Netherlands, between Maastricht and the German border. For most of the year it is a walking and caves destination; from mid-November it becomes Kerststad Valkenburg (Christmas Town Valkenburg), and the caves under the town fill with market stalls. Dates, prices and the parade schedule below were checked on the official sites on 29 October 2026. Our Netherlands country guide covers the rest of the country.

December is the wettest and darkest month, with frost on about 11 nights, and January has frost on about 13. Snow falls on around five days in December and six in January, but it rarely lies for long. The caves stay dry and sheltered whatever the weather, but the parade and the walks between attractions are outdoors, so pack a warm layer from our best packable down jackets guide.

- The Gemeentegrot on the Cauberg calls itself the oldest and largest underground Christmas market in Europe, a labyrinth of lit marl passages. Children aged 5 to 11 pay 6.80 euros, under-5s are free but still need a ticket, and tickets at the door cost 1 euro more. You book a time block and can enter at any point within it; arrive no more than 10 minutes early. Closed on 25 December, 11:00 to 18:00 on 24 and 30 December, and 10:00 to 18:00 on 26 December.
- The Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) sits under the castle ruins, with its stalls spread through centuries-old passages; this is its 27th edition. Children aged 5 to 11 pay 5 euros, plus service fees. The entrance closes 45 minutes before closing time, it is closed on 25 December, and it opens 11:00 to 17:00 on 24 December and 11:00 to 18:00 on 30 December.
- The parade. Saturdays at 19:30 on 14, 21 and 28 November and 12 and 19 December; Wednesdays at 19:00 on 9, 16, 23 and 30 December. There is no parade on 5 or 26 December. The route runs Dr. Erensstraat, Th. Dorrenplein, Gosewijnstraat, Walramplein, Hovetstraat, Berkelstraat and Grotestraat Centrum; on the last two streets you can only watch from pre-booked restaurant terraces, so head for the public viewing areas elsewhere on the route. European Best Destinations calls it the most beautiful Christmas parade in Europe.
- Also on until 3 January 2027: Kerst in MergelRijk (life-size marl and sand sculptures and a 30-metre miniature nativity story), Winter Wonderland (an underground nativity scene, the cable car and a curling lane), the new WinterGlow pavilion with Santa’s house, and cave mountain biking from 14 November. From 7 December, signposted walks in Sibbe, Schin op Geul, Broekhem and Houthem pass dozens of nativity scenes.
Eat as you go: the markets have food stalls, and the town centre has plenty of cafés for hot chocolate and a slice of Limburg vlaai (fruit tart). Compare Valkenburg with the big city markets in our Christmas markets in Europe 2026 guide.

25 x 18 x 4 cm, 254 g, 2.1 L. Locking zips, a cut-resistant double-cable strap, an RFID passport pocket and a strap that clips to a chair. Reader’s Digest’s best crossbody for travel.

A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

Valkenburg is small, and December weekends sell out early, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Centrum (Grotestraat, Walramplein) | The parade route, the Fluweelengrot and the castle on your doorstep | Busiest and priciest on parade evenings |
| Cauberg and the station area | The Gemeentegrot, quick trains to Maastricht | A short uphill walk to the castle side |
| Villages: Houthem, Schin op Geul, Sibbe | Quiet nights, the nativity walks, countryside B&Bs | You rely on the train, a bus or a car |
| Maastricht | Far more hotels, a bigger city and its own market | A 10 to 15-minute train ride each way |
For a first visit, stay in the centre between the station and Walramplein, so the caves, the parade and the trains are all on foot. If Valkenburg is full, Maastricht is the easy fallback. Check live rates here: compare Valkenburg hotel prices .
How do you get to Valkenburg?
By train from Maastricht. Valkenburg station is on the Arriva line between Maastricht and Heerlen, and trains take around 10 to 15 minutes. The station opened in 1853 and its building is often described as the oldest in the Netherlands. From the station it is about 10 minutes on foot to either cave market and 5 to 7 minutes to the centre.
By train from Amsterdam. Take an NS Intercity to Maastricht (around two and a half hours, no change) and switch to the Arriva train there; allow around three hours in total. Check in and out with a contactless bank card or phone through OVpay on both trains.
By plane. Maastricht Aachen Airport is the closest, a small airport with a handful of routes. Arriva bus 30 stops in front of the terminal and runs to Maastricht station and Meerssen station, where you change for the train to Valkenburg. Most international travellers fly into Amsterdam Schiphol, Eindhoven, Brussels or Düsseldorf and finish by train.
By car. The organisers prefer park-and-ride with the last stretch by train (Park & Train from Heerlen costs 19.25 euros for up to five people), or a pre-booked space at Parking Cauberg, about 1,200 metres from the caves. Day parking in town is capped at 12 euros during Kerststad.
What else is there to do in Valkenburg?
- The castle ruins. The ruins of the medieval castle, destroyed in 1672, look down over the town and the Christmas lights. In winter they open daily from 10:00 to 16:30 (last entry 15:45), closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day; you pay by card at the entrance, and Museumkaart holders go in free. Regular guided tours of the Velvet Cave pause while the Christmas market is on and resume in January; check the castle site for current hours before you go.
What day trips can you take from Valkenburg?
- Maastricht. Around 10 to 15 minutes by train, with Magisch Maastricht on the Vrijthof from 27 November to 27 December 2026, the old town and the river Maas. Doing both in one trip is the classic combination.
- Aachen and Cologne. The Arriva RE18 runs from Maastricht through Valkenburg and Heerlen to Aachen in Germany, where trains continue to Cologne; see our Cologne city guide.
- Belgium. Liège is close to Maastricht, and Bruges works as a second Christmas stop, with its markets open until 3 January 2027.
What goes wrong in Valkenburg?
- Going on a December Saturday without tickets. Slots sell out, roads clog and the parade evening packs the centre.
- Planning around Christmas Day or New Year. Both cave markets close on 25 December and end on 30 December; only the sand sculptures, MergelRijk, Winter Wonderland and WinterGlow continue to 3 January.
- Expecting snow. December averages 74.3 mm of rain and only about 54 hours of sunshine in the whole month; it is usually grey and damp rather than white.
How many days do you need in Valkenburg?
One full day covers both cave markets and a walk through the centre. Stay the night if you want the parade, which only runs on Saturday evenings and, from 9 December, Wednesday evenings. Two days lets you add Maastricht; with three, go on to Aachen or Cologne. If you are coming from Amsterdam, plan an overnight rather than a day trip: it is around three hours each way.
