Amsterdam is compact, walkable and very busy, so a good trip comes down to three decisions: the month, the neighbourhood and which timed museum tickets you book before you fly. Winter is a strong choice, with the Light Festival on the canals and far fewer visitors than in summer. Every date and price below was checked on 4 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?
Spring and September are the comfortable months. Late November to early January is the winter-lights season, and it is grey, wet and short on daylight.
| Month | Average high / low (°C) | Rain (mm) | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 10.0 / 4.5 | 85 | Light Festival from 26 November; windy, wet days |
| December | 6.9 / 1.9 | 82 | Light Festival, Christmas Village; about 58 hours of sun all month |
| January | 6.2 / 1.2 | 67 | Coldest month; Light Festival until 17 January |
| February | 6.9 / 1.0 | 55 | Quiet, cheaper rooms, museums with shorter queues |
| March | 10.1 / 2.8 | 52 | Keukenhof opens; still cool |
| April to May | 14.3 to 17.8 / 5.2 to 8.6 | 40 to 54 | Tulip season, King’s Day on 27 April; April is the driest month |
| June to August | 20.3 to 22.5 / 11.3 to 13.5 | 65 to 99 | Warmest and busiest; August is the wettest month |
| September to October | 19.2 to 14.7 / 11.0 to 7.7 | 84 to 87 | Mild in September, wetter and windier in October |
Figures are KNMI’s 1991-2020 normals for Schiphol, the nearest station with a full climate record. Amsterdam’s winter is more often damp and windy than icy, so waterproof shoes and a wind-resistant travel umbrella matter more than snow gear.
Amsterdam in winter: the Light Festival and the Christmas Village
The two winter anchors are published by their organisers:
| Event | 2026 dates | Hours | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam Light Festival | 26 Nov 2026 to 17 Jan 2027 | Daily 16:30 to 23:00; 31 Dec until 21:00 | Walk the 4.5 km route; canal cruise from 29.75 euros |
| Christmas Village, Museumplein | 3 to 27 Dec | Daily 12:00 to 21:00; 25 and 26 Dec until 19:00; 27 Dec until 18:00 | Free entry |
The Amsterdam Light Festival is in its 15th edition this winter. The canal cruises last about 75 minutes, on heated or open boats, and the festival app with the route and an audio guide launches in mid-November. The Christmas Village on Museumplein, between the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, has more than 50 stalls selling Christmas gifts and food.
Amsterdam’s own market is small next to Germany’s. If markets are the point of the trip, Magisch Maastricht and the underground markets in the Valkenburg caves are in the south: our Netherlands guide has their 2026 dates, and the Christmas markets 2026 guide compares them with Berlin and the rest of Europe. Pack for long evenings outdoors with our Christmas market packing list, a packable down jacket and waterproof winter boots.
Where should you stay in Amsterdam?
Central Amsterdam is small: most of the areas below are within about 20 minutes of Dam Square on foot or by tram.
| Area | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Canal Ring (Grachtengordel) | First-timers, the classic canals, the Anne Frank House and the Light Festival route on foot | Highest prices; small, steep-staired canal-house rooms |
| Jordaan | Quiet canal streets, cafés, independent shops, walking to the centre | Few large hotels; books up early |
| Museum Quarter (Oud-Zuid) | The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark and the Christmas Village | Calmer and pricier in the evening; a tram ride to the old centre |
| De Pijp | The Albert Cuyp street market, food spots, good value | Further from Central Station |
| Oost | Parks, more space for the money, a calmer local feel | A tram ride to most sights |
| Noord | Modern hotels, lower prices, free GVB ferries from behind Central Station | Across the water; less canal-side charm |
First time and short on days? Stay in the Canal Ring or the Jordaan, or in the Museum Quarter or De Pijp if those are priced up for your dates. Compare Amsterdam hotel prices by neighbourhood before you commit, and remember that the city adds a tourist tax of 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, on top of the rate.
How do you get to and around Amsterdam?
Schiphol is one of the easiest airports in Europe to leave: the station sits directly under the terminal.
Our airport transfer vs taxi vs train guide compares Schiphol with other European airports. Amsterdam is also a rail hub, with direct trains from London by Eurostar and from Germany, and a good base for onward flights such as Amsterdam to Athens.
What should you not miss in Amsterdam?
| Sight | Adult entry (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Rijksmuseum | 25 euros; under 18 free | Open daily 09:00 to 17:00; booking a start time is required for everyone |
| Van Gogh Museum | 25 euros; under 18 free | Tickets are for a set date and time; buy online |
| Anne Frank House | 16.50 euros, including a 1 euro booking fee | Online only; tickets released every Tuesday at 10:00 for six weeks later |
| Light Festival canal cruise | From 29.75 euros | About 75 minutes; 26 Nov 2026 to 17 Jan 2027 |
| Christmas Village, Museumplein | Free | 3 to 27 December 2026 |
| Canal Ring walk | Free | The 17th-century canals are a UNESCO World Heritage Site |
The Anne Frank House is the ticket that catches people out: it is not sold at the door, and slots for popular days go fast after the Tuesday release. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum sit side by side on Museumplein, so most visitors do one in the morning and keep the other for another day. For a warm break on a wet afternoon, a canal-side café with Dutch apple pie is the local answer.
Day trips from Amsterdam
- Haarlem: around 15 minutes by train, with a compact old centre and the Frans Hals Museum.
- Utrecht: around half an hour by Intercity, with canals whose wharves sit at water level and the Dom Tower.
- Keukenhof: the spring tulip gardens, open 18 March to 9 May 2027 near Lisse; see our Netherlands guide for the season.
- Maastricht and Valkenburg: too far for a casual day trip, but worth an overnight in December for the markets.
What goes wrong on an Amsterdam winter trip?
- Not booking museums. The Rijksmuseum requires a start time and the Anne Frank House sells only online; book both as soon as you have dates.
- Underdressing for wind and rain. December averages about 7°C by day with frequent rain; a thermal base layer under a waterproof shell makes a Light Festival evening comfortable.
- Crowds around Central Station and Dam Square. Keep your phone and wallet in a zipped crossbody bag worn in front, and use the GVB ferries or trams to skip the busiest streets.
- Forgetting the tourist tax. Amsterdam adds 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, so compare totals, not headline rates.
- Arriving on 25 December. The Christmas Village keeps shorter hours on 25 and 26 December and closes for the season on 27 December.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2026?
The 15th edition runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, according to the festival. The lights are on every day from 16:30 to 23:00, except on New Year’s Eve, when they switch off at 21:00. You can walk the 4.5 km route or see it from a 75-minute canal cruise, which costs from 29.75 euros.
Is there a Christmas market in Amsterdam?
Yes. The Christmas Village on Museumplein, between the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, runs from 3 to 27 December 2026, daily from 12:00 to 21:00, with shorter hours on 25, 26 and 27 December. Entry is free. For bigger traditional markets, Magisch Maastricht and the Valkenburg cave markets are in the south of the country.
What is the best time to visit Amsterdam?
April and May bring tulip season and highs of about 14 to 18°C, and September averages about 19°C with fewer visitors than summer, according to KNMI’s 1991-2020 normals for Schiphol. Late November to early January is the season of the Light Festival and the Christmas Village, with highs of about 7 to 10°C. July and August are the warmest and busiest months.
Where should I stay in Amsterdam for the first time?
The Canal Ring puts you on the most famous canals, within walking distance of the Anne Frank House and the Light Festival route, but it is the priciest. The Jordaan is quieter and close by, the Museum Quarter suits a museum-heavy trip, and De Pijp and Oost cost a little less and are a short tram ride from the centre.
How do I get from Schiphol Airport to the city centre?
Take the train from the station under the terminal. Schiphol says trains reach Amsterdam Central Station in 14 to 17 minutes, eight times an hour, and run 24 hours a day. You can tap in and out with a contactless debit or credit card or a phone. GVB city tickets do not cover this train.
How many days do you need in Amsterdam?
Three to four days covers Amsterdam well: a day for the canal ring and the Jordaan, a museum day for the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum, a morning at the Anne Frank House, and an evening on the Light Festival route in winter. Add a day for Haarlem, Utrecht or Keukenhof in spring.
Start planning your Amsterdam trip
For the winter lights, aim for a midweek stay between 3 and 23 December, when both the Light Festival and the Christmas Village are running, and book museum slots the moment you have dates.
