Gozo is the island people from Malta go to when they want a weekend off. It’s much smaller than the main island, mostly farmland, cliffs and hilltop villages, and in winter it is almost empty of tour groups. The questions are which ferry, where to sleep and how to get around without a car. Fares and ticket prices below were checked on 10 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Gozo?
Gozo shares Malta’s Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. The figures are the Malta Meteorological Office’s 1961-1990 normals for Luqa on the main island, published on the WMO World Weather Information Service; Gozo is only a few kilometres away and very similar.
| Month | Average high / low | Rainfall | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 16.7°C / 11.0°C | 112.3 mm | Quiet heritage sites, cribs and Christmas lights |
| January | 15.2°C / 9.2°C | 89.0 mm | Coastal walks, lowest prices |
| February | 15.5°C / 9.3°C | 61.3 mm | Walking, green countryside |
| March | 16.7°C / 10.1°C | 40.9 mm | Hiking, wildflowers |
| April | 19.1°C / 11.9°C | 22.5 mm | Walking and sightseeing |
| May | 23.3°C / 14.9°C | 6.6 mm | The best all-round month |
| June | 27.5°C / 18.4°C | 3.2 mm | Beaches before the peak |
| July and August | 30.7°C / 21.0–21.8°C | 0.4–7.0 mm | Beach and boat days, busiest |
| September | 28.0°C / 20.1°C | 40.4 mm | Warm sea, thinner crowds |
| October | 24.2°C / 17.1°C | 89.7 mm | Late swimming, first autumn storms |
| November | 20.1°C / 13.9°C | 80.0 mm | Mild walking weather |
Gozo in winter is not a beach trip, but it is one of the calmest island breaks in Europe. Highs of 15 to 17°C from December to February suit the cliff paths, the Citadella and Ġgantija, which you can often see without a queue. Bring a rain layer: December is the wettest month, and wind on the exposed west coast makes it feel cooler. If you need guaranteed sun and swimming in January, our winter sun in Europe guide explains why the Canary Islands are the reliable option.
Where should you stay in Gozo?
Gozo is small, so where you sleep matters less for distance than for buses and atmosphere.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria (Rabat) | First-timers without a car: almost every bus starts here, and the Citadella is on the hill above | Inland, no sea view |
| Marsalforn | A seaside bay on the north coast with a promenade | Very quiet in winter |
| Xlendi | A small cliff-lined bay on the west coast, good for swimming and diving | Very small, a bus ride from everything else |
| Mġarr | Early or late ferries | Little to do in the evening |
| Farmhouse in a village | Converted farmhouses with pools, the classic Gozo stay | You will need a car or taxis |
First time and no car? Stay in Victoria and use the buses. If you want a sea view and slow evenings, choose Marsalforn or Xlendi, and for a family or group, a farmhouse plus a hire car is the Gozo way to do it. Compare Gozo hotel prices
How do you get to Gozo and around it?
There is no airport with scheduled flights on Gozo: you fly to Malta International Airport (MLA) and cross by sea.
Gozo Channel ferry (Ċirkewwa to Mġarr). The car ferry sails from Ċirkewwa, at the northern tip of Malta, to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, daily. A standard foot passenger fare is 4.65 euros and covers the round trip: you pay only on the way back, at Mġarr. From November to March, departures from Mġarr after 20:00 cost 4.05 euros for foot passengers. Children aged 3 to 12 pay 1.15 euros, and their tickets are sold only at the Mġarr booths.
Gozo Highspeed fast ferry (Valletta to Mġarr). Catamarans leave from Lascaris Wharf, below Valletta’s walls in the Grand Harbour, with fares of 7.50 euros one way from Valletta, 8.50 euros from Sliema and 6.50 euros from Buġibba. Tickets are sold online (until 20 minutes before departure) or at the terminals, by cash or card. This is the easiest option if you are staying in Valletta or Sliema.
From the airport. Malta Public Transport’s TD1 Airport Direct bus runs from Malta International Airport to the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal.
Buses on Gozo. Malta Public Transport runs the network from the Victoria bus terminus. Route 301 and route 303 link Victoria with the ferry at Mġarr, 302 goes to Ramla, 306 to Xlendi, 307 to Xagħra, 310 to Marsalforn and 311 to Dwejra. Fares and passes are the same as on Malta: 2.50 euros a ride on day routes, 2 euros during the winter fare season, and the Explore Flex card at 27 euros for 7 days.
What should you not miss in Gozo?
| Sight | Adult entry (Heritage Malta, 2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Ċittadella, Victoria | Walls and streets free to walk; Ċittadella Combo Ticket 5 euros | The combo covers the Citadel Visitor Centre, the Old Prison and Gran Castello Historic House |
| Ġgantija Archaeological Park, Xagħra | 10 euros | Late Neolithic temples built between 3800 and 2000 BC; the visit starts in the interpretation centre |
| Discover Gozo Combo Ticket | 13 euros, valid 30 days | Ġgantija, Ta’ Kola Windmill, Citadel Visitor Centre, Old Prison, Gran Castello Historic House |
| Dwejra | Free | Inland Sea, cliffs and Fungus Rock; bus 311 |
| Ramla Bay | Free | Gozo’s best-known sandy beach; bus 302 |
- The Ċittadella. The fortified hilltop above Victoria is the island’s landmark, with views across most of Gozo from the walls. The Gozo Museum of Archaeology inside it closed on 13 April 2026 to prepare its next phase, so check for a reopening date.
- Ġgantija. Part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta, one of the World Heritage sites Heritage Malta manages, on the Xagħra plateau. Ta’ Kola Windmill is a short walk away and included in the Discover Gozo combo.
- Dwejra. The Azure Window, the famous rock arch, collapsed in a storm on 8 March 2017. What remains is still spectacular: the Inland Sea, a lagoon linked to the open sea by a cave passage, the cliffs and Fungus Rock.
- Diving. Visit Malta describes the underwater caves around Dwejra as excellent dive sites, and local dive centres on Gozo run trips there.
- Food. Try a Gozitan ftira (a filled flatbread) and ġbejniet, small local sheep’s cheeses, from a bakery or a village shop rather than a harbour-front menu.
Heritage Malta sites close on 1 January, Good Friday and on 24, 25 and 31 December, and last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
What goes wrong on a Gozo trip?
- Underestimating the journey. From Valletta by bus to Ċirkewwa, ferry, then bus to Victoria takes a big bite out of a day trip. The fast ferry from Valletta avoids the bus leg.
- Missing the last connection. Bus frequency drops in the evening; check the last bus to Mġarr if you need a ferry back to Malta the same night.
- Expecting the Azure Window. It has been gone since 2017, so don’t plan a day around it.
- Winter wind. The west coast is exposed, and rough seas can affect sea conditions at Dwejra and the dive sites; keep a flexible day.
How many days do you need in Gozo?
A day trip covers the Ċittadella and Ġgantija, or Dwejra plus one bay, but not everything comfortably. Two to three nights is the sweet spot: Victoria and the Ċittadella, Ġgantija and Ta’ Kola, Dwejra, Ramla Bay and a coastal walk, with a dive day if you want one. Combine it with three or four days on the main island; our best time to visit Malta guide covers the rest of the country.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Gozo?
Two ways. Gozo Channel’s car ferry sails from Ċirkewwa, at Malta’s northern tip, to Mġarr in about 25 minutes; foot passengers pay 4.65 euros, collected only on the way back at Mġarr. Gozo Highspeed catamarans leave from Lascaris Wharf in Valletta’s Grand Harbour for 7.50 euros one way, and from Sliema for 8.50 euros. Malta International Airport’s TD1 Airport Direct bus runs to the Ċirkewwa ferry.
Is Gozo worth visiting in winter?
Yes, for walking, heritage and quiet rather than beach days. The Malta Meteorological Office’s normals for Luqa, on the main island, give highs of 16.7°C in December, 15.2°C in January and 15.5°C in February, with lows around 9 to 11°C. December is the wettest month, at 112.3 mm. Heritage Malta sites close on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
Where should I stay in Gozo?
Victoria, the capital, is the most practical base because almost every bus route starts at its terminus. Marsalforn and Xlendi are small seaside bays with buses into Victoria, and Mġarr is handy for early or late ferries. Converted farmhouses with pools are a Gozo speciality for a slower stay, but you will want a car.
How much does Ġgantija cost?
Heritage Malta charges adults 10 euros for Ġgantija Archaeological Park in Xagħra, and youths, seniors and students 8 euros. The temples were built in the Late Neolithic between 3800 and 2000 BC. The Discover Gozo Combo Ticket, 13 euros for adults and valid 30 days, adds Ta’ Kola Windmill, the Citadel Visitor Centre, the Old Prison and Gran Castello Historic House.
Can you still see the Azure Window in Gozo?
No. The Azure Window, the rock arch at Dwejra, collapsed in a storm on 8 March 2017. Dwejra is still worth the trip for the Inland Sea, a lagoon joined to the open sea by a cave passage, the cliffs, Fungus Rock and its dive sites. Bus 311 runs there from Victoria.
How many days do you need in Gozo?
A day trip from Malta covers the Citadella and Ġgantija, or Dwejra and a bay, but not all of them comfortably. Two to three nights let you see the Citadella, Ġgantija, Dwejra, Ramla Bay and a coastal walk without rushing, or add a dive day.
