Budapest Christmas markets 2026
Budapest has two big markets, five minutes’ walk apart in District V.
| Market | Where | 2026 dates | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advent Basilica | St Stephen’s Square, in front of St Stephen’s Basilica | 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 | 11:00–22:00 Sun–Thu, 11:00–23:00 Fri–Sat |
| Vörösmarty Classic Xmas | Vörösmarty Square | From 13 November 2026; closing date not yet published | Not yet published |
Advent Basilica shortens its hours over the holidays: 11:00 to 15:00 on 24 December, 11:00 to 20:00 on 25 and 26 December, and 11:00 to 18:00 on 1 January. Vörösmarty Square adds Hungarian handicrafts and a small railway. Go for the food and crafts: kürtőskalács (chimney cake) baked over coals, lángos, hot chocolate, handmade ceramics and leather. For the full Europe-wide calendar, see our Christmas markets in Europe 2026 guide and the Christmas market packing list.
Where should you stay in Budapest?
Stay on the Pest side unless you specifically want quiet views. Pest is flat, has most of the restaurants and both Christmas markets, and its metro lines reach everything else.
| District | Feel | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| V: Belváros and Lipótváros | Riverside, grand, central | First-timers, Christmas markets | Highest prices |
| VI: Terézváros (Andrássy Avenue) | Elegant boulevards, the Opera | Couples, Széchenyi Bath by M1 metro | A short walk or ride to the river |
| VII: Erzsébetváros | Courtyards, street food, busy | Lowest central prices | Loud at night, especially weekends |
| I: Castle District (Buda) | Quiet, historic, hilltop | Views and calm evenings | Hilly, fewer places to eat |
First time? Pick District V or the river end of District VI: you can walk to the Parliament, the Chain Bridge and both markets. If budget leads, our best budget hotels in Budapest guide compares named hotels district by district, and you can check live rates here: compare Budapest hotel prices . Hotels fill fast on December weekends, so book refundable once your dates are set.
How do you get to and around Budapest?
Arriving by train? Vienna is around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes away by direct Railjet or EuroCity, and Prague is a longer daytime or overnight ride, which makes Budapest the natural end of a Prague to Vienna to Budapest loop. Our Christmas markets by train guide has the route. Flying from Germany, see cheap flights from Berlin to Budapest.
Which thermal bath should you choose?
The big three historic baths are run by the city’s bath company, Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei. One of them is closed, so plan around it.
| Bath | Adult day ticket (2026) | Opening hours | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Széchenyi (City Park, Pest) | 13,200 Ft Mon–Thu, 14,800 Ft Fri–Sun, 15,800 Ft holidays and peak days, with locker | 7:00–20:00 Mon–Thu, 7:00–22:00 Fri, 8:00–20:00 Sat–Sun | Big outdoor pools steaming in the snow |
| Rudas (Buda riverbank) | 12,000 Ft Mon–Thu, 15,000 Ft Fri–Sun | From 6:00 daily; night bathing Fri and Sat, 15,000 Ft, online only | Ottoman-era domed pool and a rooftop pool with Danube views |
| Lukács (Buda, near Margaret Bridge) | See the official site | 7:00–19:00, Tuesday to 22:00 | A calmer, local-feeling bath |
| Gellért (Buda) | Closed | Closed since 1 October 2025; reopening planned for 2028 | Not an option until it reopens |
Rudas is only open to visitors aged 14 and over, and its Turkish bath section is single-sex on some weekdays (women only on Tuesday, men only on Wednesday), so check before you go. Széchenyi’s cash desks close an hour before closing, and pool areas must be left 20 minutes before closing. Széchenyi accepts the Budapest Card for a day ticket with locker.
What should you not miss in Budapest?
| Sight | Entry (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Hungarian Parliament | 7,000 Ft for EEA citizens, 14,000 Ft for others | Advance tickets online only; limited same-day tickets at the Visitor Centre |
| Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion | Castle grounds free to walk | Go at sunrise for the Parliament view without crowds |
| Danube promenade and the Chain Bridge | Free | Walk it after dark, when the bridges and Parliament are lit |
| St Stephen’s Basilica | See the official site | In November and December, the Advent Basilica market fills the square |
| Andrássy Avenue to Heroes’ Square | Free | Ride the historic M1 metro under the avenue |
Children under 6 visit the Parliament free, and students aged 6 to 24 pay half. Eat where locals do: a lunchtime menu at a neighbourhood restaurant, or the stalls of the Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge for lángos, paprika and pastries.
What day trips can you take from Budapest?
- Szentendre: a riverside town of painted houses and small museums at the end of the suburban HÉV line.
- The Danube Bend: Visegrád’s hilltop castle and Esztergom’s basilica above the river.
- Lake Balaton: summer swimming and lakeside towns, a train ride south-west; see our Hungary guide for the best months.
What goes wrong in Budapest?
- Dynamic currency conversion. Card machines and cash machines often offer to charge you in your home currency. Always choose forints: the conversion rate offered is usually worse than your bank’s.
- Assuming Gellért is open. It closed on 1 October 2025 for a renovation planned to run to 2028.
- Booking District VII for sleep. It is central and cheap, but weekend nights are loud; ask for a courtyard room.
- Cold, slippery cobbles in December. Grippy, waterproof shoes and a crossbody bag for the crowded market squares make the evenings easier.
- Activate before you fly: data works on arrival
- Plans for 200+ countries from a few dollars
- Keep your number; no physical SIM swap
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Budapest?
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months, with average highs of about 16 to 26°C according to HungaroMet. Mid-November to December is the best time for a winter city break: the Christmas markets open on 13 November 2026, and average highs drop to about 9°C in November and 3.5°C in December, which is perfect weather for an outdoor thermal pool.
Where should I stay in Budapest for the first time?
District V (Belváros and Lipótváros) puts you between the Parliament, the Danube and both Christmas markets, but costs the most. District VI around Andrássy Avenue is quieter and close to Széchenyi Bath on the M1 metro. District VII is the cheapest central area but is noisy at night. The Castle District in Buda is calm and scenic, but hilly and far from most restaurants.
How do I get from Budapest airport into the city centre?
Airport Express bus 100E runs around the clock between Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and Deák Ferenc tér, via Kálvin tér. It needs its own airport shuttle ticket at 2,500 Ft, which you can buy with a bank card on board or in the BudapestGO app. Ordinary single tickets and the 24-hour or 72-hour travelcards are not valid on it on their own.
How much do the thermal baths cost in Budapest?
Széchenyi Thermal Bath charges 13,200 Ft for an adult day ticket with locker from Monday to Thursday, 14,800 Ft on Fridays and weekends and 15,800 Ft on holidays and peak days in 2026. Rudas Thermal Bath charges 12,000 Ft on weekdays and 15,000 Ft from Friday to Sunday, and its Friday and Saturday night bathing costs 15,000 Ft, online only. Gellért Bath is closed for renovation until a planned reopening in 2028.
When are the Budapest Christmas markets in 2026?
Both main markets open on 13 November 2026. Advent Basilica on St Stephen’s Square runs until 1 January 2027, open from 11:00 to 22:00 Sunday to Thursday and to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with shorter hours on 24 to 26 December. Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty Square had not published its closing date on 4 October 2026.
How many days do you need in Budapest?
Three to four days covers Budapest well: one day for Buda Castle and the Parliament, one for the Danube and the Pest side, a half day at a thermal bath, and a day trip to Szentendre or the Danube Bend. Add a day in Christmas-market season, when the markets are at their best after dark.
Start planning your Budapest trip
If you are only coming for a weekend of markets, book the room first: central District V fills before the flights do. For a longer trip, compare a few dates in May, September or the weeks before Christmas.
