Quick Answer

Nuremberg is worth a winter trip for its Christkindlesmarkt, which the official site lists on the Hauptmarkt from 27 November to 24 December 2026, open daily from 10:00 to 21:00 and closing at 14:00 on 24 December. The Christkind opens it at 17:30 on 27 November. Around 180 wooden stalls sell ornaments, Lebkuchen gingerbread and finger-sized Rostbratwürste, and the children’s market on Hans-Sachs-Platz adds a carousel and a steam railway. Dress for real cold: the Deutscher Wetterdienst’s 1991-2020 means are about 1.6°C in December and 0.7°C in January. Stay inside the city walls, on the castle side of St. Sebald or the St. Lorenz side nearer the station. The U2 underground reaches the airport in about 12 minutes, and ICE trains link Munich in around an hour. Two days covers the market, the Imperial Castle (10 euros, closed 24, 25 and 31 December) and the Documentation Center at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds (7.50 euros).

Nuremberg is a walled medieval old town with a castle on its hill, one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets in the square below, and some of the most important 20th-century history sites in Europe a tram ride away. The choices that shape the trip are the dates (the market closes at lunchtime on Christmas Eve), which side of the river to sleep on, and how much time to give the history. Every date and price below was checked on 8 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Nuremberg?

Summer is the comfortable season. Late November to 23 December is the market season, and it is properly cold.

The figures are monthly means of day and night from the Deutscher Wetterdienst station Nürnberg, 1991-2020; the annual mean is about 9.8°C. December averages around 18 frost days, so pavements on the castle hill can be icy in the evening.

Nuremberg’s Christmas market in 2026

The Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt below the Church of Our Lady with around 180 wooden stalls under red-and-white canvas roofs. The Nuremberg Christkind opens it on the Friday before the first Advent with a prologue from the church balcony, which in 2026 is 27 November at 17:30. Expect crafts, ornaments, Lebkuchen gingerbread, Spekulatius biscuits and grilled Nürnberger Rostbratwürste in a bun.

The hours are as the organiser publishes them; check the site in November before you plan an evening around them. The trap is the end date: like Munich, Nuremberg closes at 14:00 on 24 December, so a trip between Christmas and New Year belongs in Vienna, Salzburg or Prague. The opening evening is the most crowded of the season; come on a weekday morning to see the stalls. For every major market across Europe in one table, see our Christmas markets 2026 guide, and pack with our Christmas market packing list, waterproof winter boots and a packable down jacket.

Where should you stay in Nuremberg?

The walled old town is compact, and the river Pegnitz splits it into two halves. Anywhere inside the walls is a walk from the market.

AreaBest forThe trade-off
St. Sebald (north of the river)The Hauptmarkt, the Imperial Castle and the Dürer House on footThe highest prices in Advent, and steep cobbled lanes up the castle hill
St. Lorenz (south of the river)The main shopping streets, St. Lorenz church, a short walk from the stationBusier and more commercial than the castle side
Around the Hauptbahnhof (just outside the walls)The airport U2, ICE trains and day tripsChain hotels and a busy ring road, a longer walk to the Hauptmarkt
Gostenhof and St. Johannis (west and north-west of the walls)Quieter residential streets, often lower pricesA tram or a longer walk to the market

First time and here for the market? Stay in St. Sebald or St. Lorenz, or by the Hauptbahnhof if the old town is booked out. Compare Nuremberg hotel prices by area early: market-season weekends fill first, and a midweek stay is usually cheaper.

  • Turning up at the castle on 24, 25 or 31 December. It is closed, and in winter it shuts at 16:00 on the days it is open.
  • Booking late for Advent weekends. Old-town hotels fill first; book early or stay by the station.
  • Underdressing. December averages around 18 frost days; a thermal base layer makes long evenings outdoors comfortable.
  • Crowds on the Hauptmarkt. Weekend evenings are packed; keep your phone and wallet in a zipped crossbody bag worn in front.

What is the best time to visit Nuremberg?
