Quick Answer

Munich is worth it in winter if you time it for the Christmas market. The City of Munich lists the Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz from 20 November to 24 December 2026, opening earlier than in past years, with an early close at 14:00 on 24 December, so plan to leave before Christmas. Winters are cold: January is the coldest month, with a mean of about 1°C at the München-Stadt station over 1991-2020, so pack for long evenings outdoors. For milder sightseeing, go in May, June or September. The best first-time base is the Altstadt around Marienplatz; Maxvorstadt, Haidhausen and the streets near the Hauptbahnhof usually cost less. From the airport, the S1 and S8 S-Bahn reach the centre in roughly 35 to 45 minutes, and the MVV Airport-City-Day-Ticket costs around 17.50 euros. Three days covers the old town, the Residenz, one big museum and a day trip to Neuschwanstein, where tickets cost 21 euros.

Munich is a compact city with a walkable old town, a royal palace in the middle and the Alps close enough for a day trip. The decisions that matter are the dates (the market closes on Christmas Eve), the district and whether to book Neuschwanstein. Every date and price below was checked on 4 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Munich?

Spring and early autumn are the comfortable months. Late November to 23 December is the market season, and it is cold.

At around 515 metres above sea level, Munich is a little colder in winter than Berlin.

Munich’s Christmas market in 2026

The City of Munich says the Christkindlmarkt now opens on the Friday before Totensonntag, which puts the 2026 start on 20 November. It fills Marienplatz in front of the Neues Rathaus and the streets around it, with stalls for crafts, ornaments, candles, gingerbread, roasted almonds and hot chocolate, and a giant Christmas tree.

The trap is the end date: like most German markets, Marienplatz closes at 14:00 on 24 December, so a Christmas-to-New-Year trip should go to Berlin, Vienna or Prague instead. For every big market across Europe in one table, see our Christmas markets 2026 guide, and pack with our Christmas market packing list, waterproof winter boots and a packable down jacket.

Where should you stay in Munich?

Munich’s centre is small, and everything below is within about 15 minutes of Marienplatz by U-Bahn, S-Bahn or tram.

Day trips from Munich

  • Neuschwanstein: regional trains reach Füssen from Munich Hauptbahnhof in around 2 to 2.5 hours, then a short bus ride takes you to the castle area. The Bavarian Palace Administration runs visits by guided tour only, and box-office tickets often sell out early, so book a timed slot online.
  • Salzburg: around 1 hour 30 minutes by railjet, with its own Christmas market. See our Austria guide.
  • Nuremberg: around an hour by ICE, home of the Christkindlesmarkt (27 November to 24 December 2026).

What goes wrong on a Munich winter trip?

  • Arriving on 24 December. The Christkindlmarkt closes at 14:00 that day and does not reopen.
  • Turning up at Neuschwanstein without a ticket. Box-office tickets often sell out early; book online.
  • The wrong airport ticket. A city-zone single does not cover the airport; buy the Airport-City-Day-Ticket.
  • Underdressing. January averages about 1°C; a thermal base layer makes long evenings at the market comfortable.
  • Crowded Marienplatz. Weekend evenings are packed; keep your phone and wallet in a zipped crossbody bag worn in front.
