Quick Answer

Frankfurt is worth one or two days, and it works well as a long layover because the S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 reach the main station from the airport in about 15 minutes, according to the RMV transport association. The best reason to come in winter is the Frankfurt Christmas market, which Visit Frankfurt lists from 23 November to 22 December 2026 with more than 230 stalls across six central squares, from Römerberg to Hauptwache. December is cold and grey, with a mean of about 3°C at the Deutscher Wetterdienst Frankfurt/Main station. Stay in the Altstadt or Innenstadt to walk to the market, the Kleinmarkthalle and the Main Tower (9 euros for the 200-metre platform), or in Sachsenhausen for the Städel and the Museum Embankment. A one-day Frankfurt Card costs 13 euros and covers trains to and from the airport.

Frankfurt is Germany’s banking city and its biggest airport hub, which is why most people only change planes here. The centre is small: the main station, the Römerberg square, the river Main and the museums along its south bank all sit within a few S-Bahn stops or a half-hour walk. The decisions that matter are your dates (the market ends on 22 December), which ticket to buy at the airport and which side of the river to sleep on. Every date and price below was checked on 9 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Frankfurt?

Summer is warm and sunny. Late November to 22 December is market season, and it is cold and dark, with around 14 frost nights in December.

SeasonMean temperature (DWD, Frankfurt/Main, 1991-2020)What it is likeBest for
Novemberabout 6°CGrey, around 52 hours of sun in the monthThe market from 23 November, museums
Decemberabout 3°CShort days, around 40 hours of sun, about 55 mm of rainThe Christmas market to 22 December
January to Februaryabout 2 to 3°CThe coldest stretch, around 15 frost nights in JanuaryMuseums, low hotel prices outside trade fairs
March to Aprilabout 7 to 11°CCool and changeableWalks along the Main before the crowds
May to Septemberabout 15 to 20.5°CWarmest and sunniest, July the peakRiver walks, the Museum Embankment, day trips
Octoberabout 11°CCooling, autumn colourA quiet city break

The figures are monthly means of day and night from the Deutscher Wetterdienst for its Frankfurt/Main station at the airport, 1991-2020. For a winter visit, a waterproof pair of winter boots, a packable down jacket and a thermal base layer do more than one heavy coat.

The Frankfurt Christmas market in 2026

Visit Frankfurt, the city’s tourist board, lists the market from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026. It is one big market spread across six squares rather than several rival ones, so you can walk the whole thing in an evening.

The tourist board traces the market back to 1498, which makes it one of the oldest in Germany. Römerberg, with the half-timbered Ostzeile facing the Römer town hall, is the postcard corner; Mainkai along the river is calmer. Go for the crafts, ornaments, gingerbread, roasted almonds and hot chocolate, and come back after dark when the squares are lit.

The trap is the end date: the market closes on 22 December, earlier than many German markets, and Totensonntag (22 November) falls the day before it opens. For every big market in Europe in one table, see our Christmas markets 2026 guide and the Christmas market packing list.

Where should you stay in Frankfurt?

Most visitors need only one or two nights, so pick the area that saves you the most walking for your plan.

AreaBest forThe trade-off
Altstadt and Innenstadt (Römerberg, Zeil, Hauptwache)First-timers, the Christmas market, the Kleinmarkthalle on footThe priciest area on Advent weekends
Sachsenhausen (south bank)The Städel and the Museum Embankment, quieter streetsA bridge walk to the market each evening
Bahnhofsviertel (main station)The airport train, early departures, often lower pricesParts of it feel rough at night; choose a hotel on a main street
Westend and the MesseBusiness trips, the trade-fair groundsPrices jump sharply during big fairs

First trip and here for the market? Stay in the Altstadt or Innenstadt; for an early flight, the station district saves you a change. Compare Frankfurt hotel prices by area and check the Messe Frankfurt calendar before you book, because a large trade fair can push the price of the same room up sharply.

How do you get to and around Frankfurt?

Frankfurt Airport is Lufthansa’s main hub (see our Lufthansa review), and its regional station sits in the basement of Terminal 1.

Germany is in the Schengen area: see the 90/180-day rule and our EES and ETIAS guide before you go.

Can you see Frankfurt on a long layover?

Yes, with at least six or seven hours and the right to enter the Schengen area. A realistic loop: S-Bahn to Hauptwache, walk to the Kleinmarkthalle for lunch, through the New Old Town to Römerberg, along the Main, then up the Main Tower before the train back. Allow plenty of time for passport control and security on the return, and skip the trip if you arrive from outside Schengen without the right to enter.

Plan a Museum Embankment day. The Museumsufer on the south bank lines up the Städel and a string of other museums along the river. The MuseumsuferTicket costs 21 euros (32 euros for a family) and covers 39 museums on two consecutive days, and on the last Saturday of each month the Satourday programme makes entry free at many of them.

Eat Frankfurt, not just market snacks. The city’s signature dish is Grüne Soße, a cold sauce of seven herbs (borage, chervil, cress, parsley, burnet, sorrel and chives) served with boiled eggs and potatoes; it has carried protected geographical indication since 2016. The Kleinmarkthalle, Hasengasse 5-7, has more than 60 stalls of fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread and deli food and is the easiest place to try local specialities. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Day trips from Frankfurt

  • Heidelberg: the castle ruin and the old town on the Neckar, reached by train.
  • Mainz: the cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum across the Rhine, by S-Bahn or regional train.
  • The Upper Middle Rhine Valley: a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of castles and cliffs, by regional train along the river.
  • Further afield: Cologne is a fast ICE trip for its own cluster of markets, Nuremberg has the best-known Christkindlesmarkt, and Munich and Berlin are longer ICE rides. Our Christmas markets by train guide strings several together.

What goes wrong on a Frankfurt trip?

  • Arriving on 23 December. The Christmas market closed on the 22nd.
  • Booking during a trade fair. Big fairs at the Messe fill the city and push prices up everywhere, not just near the grounds.
  • Planning a Monday museum day. The Städel is closed on Mondays.
  • Saving the Kleinmarkthalle for Sunday. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
  • Buying the wrong airport ticket. The 13 euro Frankfurt Card covers the airport and the city for the day, for 50 cents less than the Airport-to-City ticket, and adds discounts.
  • Crowded market evenings. Römerberg and Hauptwache are packed on Advent weekends; keep your phone and wallet zipped and in front of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Frankfurt Christmas market in 2026?

Visit Frankfurt lists the Frankfurt Christmas market from 23 November to 22 December 2026, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday from 11:00 to 21:00. It has more than 230 stalls spread over Römerberg, Paulsplatz, Mainkai, Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, Hauptwache and Roßmarkt, with a 26-metre Christmas tree on Römerberg. It closes on 22 December, so a trip that starts on the 23rd misses it.

How do I get from Frankfurt Airport to the city centre?

Take S-Bahn line S8 or S9 from the regional station under Terminal 1. RMV puts the ride to Frankfurt main station at about 15 minutes and to Hauptwache at about 15 to 20 minutes. From Terminal 2, take the SkyLine shuttle to Terminal 1 first. RMV’s Airport-to-City day ticket costs 13.50 euros, and a one-day Frankfurt Card costs 13 euros and also covers the airport.

What is the best time to visit Frankfurt?

May to September is the warm season, with July the warmest month at a mean of about 20.5°C at the Deutscher Wetterdienst Frankfurt/Main station over 1991-2020. Late November to 22 December is Christmas-market season: December averages about 3°C, with around 40 hours of sunshine in the whole month, so plan for cold, grey evenings.

Where should I stay in Frankfurt?

The Altstadt and Innenstadt around Römerberg and the Zeil put the market, the Kleinmarkthalle and the Main Tower on foot. Sachsenhausen across the river is quieter and close to the Museum Embankment. The station district is the most convenient for the airport train and often cheaper, but parts of it feel rough at night. Hotel prices across the city jump during big trade fairs.

Is Frankfurt worth it on a long layover?

Yes, if you have at least six or seven hours and can leave the airport. The S-Bahn reaches the main station in about 15 minutes, so you can see Römerberg and the New Old Town, eat at the Kleinmarkthalle and ride up the Main Tower, then return. Travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area must pass passport control and be allowed to enter to do this.

How much does the Main Tower cost?

An adult ticket for the Main Tower viewing platform, 200 metres up, costs 9 euros, or 6 euros reduced, and a family ticket costs 20 euros. In winter the platform opens Sunday to Thursday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00, with the last lift 45 minutes before closing. The Frankfurt Card saves 20% on the adult ticket.
