Quick Answer

Cologne is one of the best Christmas-market cities in Germany because it has several big markets within walking distance of the main station. The organisers list the cathedral market on Roncalliplatz and the Markt der Engel on Neumarkt from 16 November to 23 December 2026, both closed on Sunday 22 November, while Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town, with its ice rink, runs on to 10 January 2027. One change since summer: Cologne Cathedral has charged for visits since 1 July 2026, at 12 euros for adults, with services and prayer still free. December is cold rather than freezing, with a mean of about 4°C at the Deutscher Wetterdienst Köln/Bonn station. Stay in the Altstadt by the cathedral for the markets, or in the Belgian Quarter or Deutz for lower prices. Trains from the airport station reach the city centre, and two to three days covers the cathedral, two museums and the markets.

Cologne is a compact Rhine city where the cathedral, the main station and the biggest Christmas markets sit within a few minutes of each other. The decisions that matter are your dates (most markets close on 23 December), whether to book a cathedral ticket and which side of the Rhine to sleep on. Every date and price below was checked on 8 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Cologne?

Summer is the mild season. Mid-November to 23 December is the market season, and it is grey and cold, though rarely icy.

SeasonMean temperature (DWD, Köln/Bonn, 1991-2020)What it is likeBest for
Novemberabout 7°CGrey, around 59 hours of sun in the monthEarly markets from 13 November
Decemberabout 4°CShort days, around 45 hours of sun, about 69 mm of rainAll the Christmas markets
January to Februaryabout 3 to 4°CThe coldest stretch, around 13 frost nights in JanuaryMuseums, low hotel prices, the Heinzels ice rink to 10 January
March to Aprilabout 7 to 10°CCool and changeableSightseeing before the crowds
May to Septemberabout 14 to 19°CMildest and sunniest, July the warmestRhine walks, terraces, day trips
Octoberabout 11°CCooling, autumn colour along the riverA quiet city break

The figures are monthly means of day and night from the Deutscher Wetterdienst for its Köln/Bonn station at the airport, 1991-2020. Pack for long, damp evenings outdoors: a waterproof pair of winter boots, a packable down jacket and a thermal base layer matter more than a heavy coat.

The cathedral market fills Roncalliplatz with more than 140 stalls and puts on over 100 free events on its central stage, according to the organiser. Heinzels Wintermärchen adds more than 100 stalls and an open-air ice rink with straights over 100 metres long. Go for the crafts, ornaments, gingerbread, roasted almonds, hot chocolate and the stage concerts.

The trap is Sunday 22 November: Totensonntag, the German day of remembrance, shuts both the cathedral market and the Markt der Engel, and the Stadtgarten opens only at 18:00. For Cologne between Christmas and New Year, only Heinzels Wintermärchen (from 26 December) and the harbour market are still open. For every big market in Europe in one table, see our Christmas markets 2026 guide and our Christmas market packing list.

How do you get to and around Cologne?

Cologne is one of Germany’s big rail hubs: the Cologne Tourist Board counts more than 1,300 passenger trains a day linking the city with Germany and abroad.

Cologne is the first stop on the Rhine and Alsace market route (Cologne, Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel) and on the Benelux loop from Brussels in our Christmas markets by train guide. Germany is in the Schengen area: see the 90/180-day rule and our EES and ETIAS guide before you go.

Cologne Cathedral now needs a ticket. Since 1 July 2026, sightseeing visits are paid and run through the main portal; you enter free through the north portal to pray, light a candle or visit the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visiting hours are typically 10:00 to 17:45 on weekdays and much shorter on Sundays and church holidays, so check the cathedral’s opening-hours page before you go.

The Romano-Germanic Museum is closed for renovation at Roncalliplatz. Part of the collection is shown at the Belgisches Haus, Cäcilienstraße 46, near Neumarkt.

Day trips from Cologne

  • Aachen: Charlemagne’s cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under an hour by train.
  • Bonn: the former capital, on the Rhine just south of Cologne, by regional train or S-Bahn.
  • Düsseldorf: a short regional-train hop north for the Rhine promenade and the old town.
  • Further afield: Berlin and Munich are long-distance ICE trips, and Nuremberg has Germany’s best-known Christkindlesmarkt. For a December mix of cities, see where to go in December.

What goes wrong on a Cologne Christmas trip?

  • Booking for Sunday 22 November. The cathedral market and the Markt der Engel are both closed for Totensonntag.
  • Arriving on 24 December. Most markets closed on the 23rd, and Heinzels Wintermärchen is shut on 24 and 25 December.
  • Turning up at the cathedral without a ticket. Since July 2026, sightseeing needs a 12 euro timed ticket; buy it online.
  • Trade-fair weeks. Hotel prices across the city, and especially in Deutz, rise sharply during big Koelnmesse fairs; check the dates before you book.
  • Crowded Saturday evenings. Roncalliplatz and the old town are packed; keep your phone and wallet zipped and in front of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the Cologne Christmas markets in 2026?

The cathedral market on Roncalliplatz and the Markt der Engel on Neumarkt both run from 16 November to 23 December 2026 and both close on Sunday 22 November for Totensonntag. The Stadtgarten market opens first, on 13 November, and closes on 23 December. Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town runs from 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, closed on 24 and 25 December, and the harbour market at the Chocolate Museum runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Do you have to pay to enter Cologne Cathedral?

Yes, since 1 July 2026. A ticket to visit the cathedral costs 12 euros, or 6 euros reduced, and children under 14 go free. Attending a church service, praying or lighting a candle stays free through the north portal. The tower climb, 533 steps to the viewing platform, and the treasury cost 8 euros each, or 12 euros together.

What is the best time to visit Cologne?

May to September is the mildest stretch, with July the warmest month at a mean of about 19°C at the Köln/Bonn station over 1991-2020. Mid-November to 23 December is the Christmas-market season. It is cold and dark but rarely freezing: December averages about 4°C and gets around 45 hours of sunshine in the whole month.

Where should I stay in Cologne for the first time?

The Altstadt around the cathedral and the main station puts the big markets and the trains within a short walk, but it is the busiest and priciest area in Advent. The Belgian Quarter is quieter, with cafés and independent shops, and Deutz across the Rhine is close to the station by train or on foot over the Hohenzollern Bridge, though prices jump there during big trade fairs.

How do I get from Cologne Bonn Airport to the city centre?

Take the train. Cologne Bonn Airport has its own railway station between Terminals 1 and 2, served by S-Bahn and regional trains to Cologne’s main station next to the cathedral. A 24-hour KölnCard costs 9 euros and covers buses, trams and local trains within the city of Cologne, plus discounts at many museums.

How many days do you need in Cologne?

Two to three days is enough: a day for the cathedral, its tower and the old town, a museum day at Museum Ludwig or the Chocolate Museum, and an evening for each of the big Christmas markets. Add a day trip by train to Aachen, Bonn or Düsseldorf if you have a third or fourth day.

Start planning your Cologne trip

If the markets are the point, aim for a midweek stay between 17 November and 21 December, avoid Sunday 22 November, and book the cathedral ticket once your dates are fixed. Compare a few dates before you book.
