Quick Answer

Strasbourg is worth it above all from late November to Christmas, when the City of Strasbourg turns its UNESCO-listed old town into eight Christmas markets: the 2026 edition opens on Friday 27 November, and the city had not yet published the closing date on 8 October 2026 (the 2025 market ran to 24 December). Get there by TGV from Paris Est: SNCF Connect lists the fastest train at 1 hour 45 minutes, with fares from around 25 euros booked early. Stay on the Grande-Île, the historic island around the cathedral, to walk to every market; the station area and Krutenau are the cheaper, still walkable alternatives. Two days covers the cathedral (free entry, 10 euros for the 330-step platform climb), Petite France and the markets, and a third day fits Colmar, 26 minutes away by the fastest train. December is cold: Météo-France averages a high of about 6°C and a low near 1°C.

Strasbourg sits on the Rhine border with Germany, and it feels like both countries at once: half-timbered houses on the canals, a Gothic cathedral in pink sandstone, and a Christmas market that has run since 1570. The trip comes down to three choices: whether you go for the markets, where you sleep in a city that fills up in December, and whether you add a day in Colmar. Dates, fares and fees below were checked on 8 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Strasbourg?

There are two good Strasbourgs. Late November to 24 December is the famous one: lights, markets and crowds. May to September is the easy one: warm evenings, the canals at their best and no queue for anything.

Figures are 1991-2020 normals for Strasbourg-Entzheim. In December the cold is damp rather than dramatic: pack the layers from our thermal base layers guide, a packable down jacket and warm waterproof boots, or use the Christmas market packing list.

What do you need to know about the Strasbourg Christmas market?

The City of Strasbourg runs it as “Strasbourg Capitale de Noël”: not one market but eight, spread across the Grande-Île and all within walking distance of each other.

  • Dates: the city says the 2026 market opens on Friday 27 November 2026. The closing date had not been published on 8 October 2026; in 2025 it ran to 24 December, closing at 18:00 on Christmas Eve.
  • Hours: the city’s FAQ gives 11:30 to 21:00 daily, from 14:00 on opening day.
  • Cars are banned from the Grande-Île during market hours. Driving in? The city’s Park and Ride sites cost 4.20 euros a day, including return tram tickets for everyone in the car.
  • Go early in the week. The city itself names Monday, Tuesday and mornings as the quietest times, and Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings and weekends as the busiest.
  • Bring hot chocolate money, not a cup: drinks come in a returnable cup with a 1 euro deposit, refunded or donated to charity when you hand it back.

Where should you stay in Strasbourg?

In December, your base matters more than your hotel. Rooms on the island go first, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.

  • Neustadt: the grand avenues and Place de la République, built under German administration from 1871, a quieter walk than the island.
  • Food, not drink: at the markets, look for bredele (Alsatian Christmas biscuits), pretzels, gingerbread and hot chocolate; away from them, an Alsatian lunch of tarte flambée (flammekueche) or a café on Place Kléber.

What day trips can you take from Strasbourg?

  • Colmar: 26 minutes by the fastest train, from around 6 euros, and around 41 trains a day according to SNCF Connect. Its own Christmas markets run from 23 November to 29 December 2026, so they carry on after Strasbourg’s close.
  • Alsace villages: Eguisheim and Turckheim hold markets from 27 November to 30 December 2026, Riquewihr from 27 November to 20 December, according to Colmar Tourist Office.
  • Haut-Koenigsbourg castle: a rebuilt medieval castle above the Alsace plain, 12 euros for adults; check winter opening hours before you go.
  • Kehl: a German riverside town across the Rhine, on tram D with a CTS single ticket.

What can go wrong in Strasbourg?

  • Hotels sell out for Advent weekends. Book early, or base yourself by the station or in Kehl.
  • The weekend crush. The city calls Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings and weekends the busiest; plan the market you care about for a Monday or Tuesday morning.
  • Security checks and slow queues at the cathedral: carry a small bag you can open quickly.
  • 24 and 25 December: the market closes at 18:00 on Christmas Eve, and city museums close on 25 December and 1 January.
  • Dates not final yet: re-check the closing date on the city’s site before you book anything non-refundable.

How many days do you need in Strasbourg?

Two days is the sweet spot: one for the cathedral, the astronomical clock and Petite France, one for the markets and a boat tour. Add a third for Colmar or a museum day on the Pass Musées. Strasbourg also pairs well with Paris, under two hours away by TGV; further south, Bordeaux is a different, milder France.
