Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, and most winter visitors come for one address on the Arctic Circle. The decisions that matter are the month, how much cold you can handle, where you sleep and which one or two paid experiences are worth it. Every date and price below was checked on 8 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Rovaniemi?
December is for Santa, February and March are for snow and auroras with more daylight, and summer brings the midnight sun.
| Month | Average high / low (°C) | Snow depth mid-month | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | -2.1 / -6.7 | about 9 cm | Snow arrives; Santa season opens late in the month |
| December | -4.9 / -10.6 | about 28 cm | Peak Santa season, shortest days, highest prices |
| January | -7.3 / -13.5 | about 47 cm | Coldest month; clear nights for auroras |
| February | -7.3 / -13.3 | about 66 cm | Deep snow, days lengthening fast, aurora peak |
| March | -1.9 / -9.1 | about 77 cm | The best all-round winter month |
| April | 4.1 / -3.4 | about 64 cm | Spring snow; the aurora season ends as nights get light |
| June to August | 17.0 to 20.1 / 8.5 to 11.8 | none | Midnight sun from around 6 June to 7 July |
| September to October | 11.1 to 3.1 / 4.9 to -1.3 | none to light | Autumn colours, first auroras, lower prices |
Figures are the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991-2020 normals for Rovaniemi Airport. Averages hide the cold snaps: nights fall below minus 10°C on about 20 days of an average January, and the airport’s record low is minus 38.1°C, set in January 1999.
Daylight and the northern lights
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s sunrise data puts daylight at about 3 hours 45 minutes on 1 December 2026 and 2 hours 14 minutes on 21 December. By 1 March the sun is up from about 07:32 to 17:27, which is why late winter is easier for sightseeing. Rovaniemi is just south of the Arctic Circle, so there is no true polar night here.
For auroras, the Finnish Meteorological Institute says displays appear on roughly 50% of nights in Lapland resorts such as Levi and Ylläs, and on roughly 25% in central Finland. Rovaniemi sits between the two, so your odds are good but not guaranteed. Watch between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. local time, get away from street lights, and plan several evenings, because cloud is the usual reason people miss them.
Where should you stay in Rovaniemi?
| Area | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| City centre | Restaurants, the Arktikum, buses and taxis, the best range of hotels | You need a bus or taxi to Santa Claus Village, about 8 km away |
| Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle | Families, cabins, Santa on foot | Few places to eat in the evening once the village closes |
| Ounasvaara, across the river | Quieter stays next to the town’s ski and outdoor area | Less walkable to the centre in deep cold |
| Wilderness cabins outside town | Dark skies for auroras, silence, a log-fire cabin | You depend on a car, a transfer or a tour operator |
First visit with children? Stay in the centre for more choice and price, and bus out to the village, or stay near the village if being on the Arctic Circle is the point of the trip. Compare Rovaniemi hotel prices by area as soon as you have dates: December rooms are the first to go.

What should you not miss in Rovaniemi?
| Experience | Price (2026-27 season) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle line | Free | Open every day; cross the marked line for the photo |
| Santa Claus Office | Free entry; photos and video extra | Open 08:00 to 20:00, 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027; arrive early |
| Santa Claus Main Post Office | Free entry | Open 09:00 to 20:00, 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 |
| Santa’s Husky Rides, at the village | 63 euros adult, 52 euros child (4 to 11) | 2.5 km musher-driven ride in a 30-minute slot; open 30 November 2026 to 4 April 2027 |
| Santa Claus Reindeer sleigh ride | from 30 euros (400 m) or 50 euros (800 m) | No pre-booking for the short rides |
| Northern lights reindeer safari | from 169 euros | Around 3 hours with Santa Claus Reindeer |
| Arktikum science centre and museum | 22 euros adult | Arctic and Lapland exhibitions; closed Mondays from March to November |
Short rides at the village are the easy way to try huskies and reindeer with small children. Longer safaris further out, often combined with an evening aurora hunt, cost more but get you into dark forest away from the lights. The Arktikum is the best indoor option for the hours when the sun is down, which in December is most of the day.
Beyond Rovaniemi
- Further north for better aurora odds: the Finnish Meteorological Institute counts roughly 50% aurora nights in resorts such as Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä, and about 75% at Kilpisjärvi.
- True polar night: in Utsjoki, at the top of Finland, the sun does not rise from about late November to mid-January.
- Helsinki: an easy add-on at the start or end of the trip, by flight or by the night train. See the Finland guide.
What goes wrong on a Rovaniemi winter trip?
- Underdressing. Minus 10°C at the airport can feel far colder on a snowmobile or in a sled. Layer a thermal base layer, a packable down jacket and insulated winter boots; heated gloves or hand warmers help on long aurora nights.
- Planning sightseeing for the afternoon. In December the sun sets around 14:00; do outdoor activities in the late morning.
- Queues at Santa’s office. From late November to early January, Santa Claus Village recommends arriving earlier in the day to make sure of same-day entry.
- Christmas Eve hours. On 24 December 2026 many village venues keep shorter hours, some closing at 15:00.
- Betting the trip on one aurora night. Clouds can sit over Lapland for days; give yourself three or four evenings.
- Booking late. December accommodation sells out early and costs far more than in March.
How many days do you need in Rovaniemi?
Three to four days covers it: one for Santa Claus Village, one for a husky or reindeer safari, one for the Arktikum and the town, and several evenings for the northern lights. Comparing December trips? Our where to go in December guide sets Rovaniemi against the Christmas-market cities, and the Iceland guide is the main alternative for an aurora trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Santa Claus Village free?
Yes. Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi is open every day of the year, and entry to the village and to the Santa Claus Office is free of charge. You pay only if you buy photos or videos of your visit, or book activities such as husky or reindeer rides. From 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 the Santa Claus Office is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
Can you see the northern lights in Rovaniemi?
Yes, on clear, dark nights from about September to early April. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says auroras appear on roughly 50% of nights in Lapland resorts such as Levi and Ylläs, and on roughly 25% in central Finland; Rovaniemi lies between the two. The best window is 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., away from street lights, and February to March and September to October are the best months.
How cold is Rovaniemi in December?
Cold. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991-2020 normals for Rovaniemi Airport give a December average high of minus 4.9°C and a low of minus 10.6°C. January is colder, at minus 7.3°C by day and minus 13.5°C at night, and the airport’s record low is minus 38.1°C. Cold snaps well below minus 20°C are possible, so dress in layers.
How many hours of daylight does Rovaniemi get in winter?
Very few, but it is never fully dark all day. On 1 December 2026 the sun is up from about 10:13 to 13:58, and on 21 December from about 11:08 to 13:22, roughly 2 hours 14 minutes, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Rovaniemi sits just south of the Arctic Circle, so it has no true polar night.
How do I get from Rovaniemi Airport to the city and Santa Claus Village?
Take the Airport Express bus, which links the airport, the city centre, the railway station and Santa Claus Village for 8 euros one way; it takes cards or prebooked tickets, not cash. Taxis wait at three stands outside the terminal. Santa Claus Village is about 3 km from the airport and 8 km north of the centre, and local bus 8 runs there year-round.
How many days do you need in Rovaniemi?
Three to four days is enough for most visits: one day for Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle, one for a husky or reindeer safari, one for the Arktikum museum and the town, and at least two or three evenings to try for the northern lights, because cloud can block several nights in a row.
