Finland is two trips. The south, around Helsinki, is a Baltic city break with mild summers and grey, snow-dusted winters. Lapland in the north is Arctic: deep snow from November to April, auroras on clear nights and real cold. Pick the trip first, then the month. Every date and price below was checked on 8 October 2026.
The best time to visit Finland, month by month
Temperatures are the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991-2020 normals for Helsinki Kaisaniemi (the capital) and Rovaniemi Airport (Lapland).
| Month | Helsinki high / low (°C) | Rovaniemi high / low (°C) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | -0.7 / -5.6 | -7.3 / -13.5 | Snow, husky and reindeer rides, auroras |
| February | -1.3 / -6.3 | -7.3 / -13.3 | Aurora season peak, deep snow |
| March | 2.3 / -3.6 | -1.9 / -9.1 | The best Lapland month: snow plus longer days |
| April | 8.1 / 1.1 | 4.1 / -3.4 | Late skiing in the north, spring in Helsinki |
| May | 14.6 / 6.4 | 11.0 / 2.5 | Quiet shoulder month; snow melts in Lapland |
| June | 18.8 / 11.2 | 17.0 / 8.5 | Midnight sun in Rovaniemi from around 6 June |
| July | 21.9 / 14.5 | 20.1 / 11.8 | Warmest month; lakes, islands, festivals |
| August | 20.5 / 13.5 | 17.2 / 9.6 | Summer in Helsinki; wettest month in both |
| September | 15.4 / 9.3 | 11.1 / 4.9 | Autumn colours and the first auroras |
| October | 9.2 / 4.2 | 3.1 / -1.3 | Aurora season, cheap shoulder prices |
| November | 4.4 / 0.4 | -2.1 / -6.7 | Snow arrives in Lapland; Santa season opens |
| December | 1.4 / -2.9 | -4.9 / -10.6 | Santa, Christmas markets, shortest days |
Snow is the other number to watch. On the 15th of the month, the institute’s normals give Rovaniemi an average snow depth of about 28 cm in December, 47 cm in January, 66 cm in February and 77 cm in March. Helsinki’s winter is far milder and often slushy rather than white.

Santa and Christmas in Lapland (late November to early January)
Rovaniemi is the Santa trip. Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of the town centre, is open every day of the year, and charges nothing to enter the village or Santa Claus Office; you pay only for photos and activities. The Santa Claus Office keeps its longest hours, 08:00 to 20:00, from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and the village recommends arriving early in the day in that period. Our Rovaniemi guide covers the husky and reindeer rides, prices and where to stay.
In Helsinki, the Helsinki Christmas Market on Senate Square runs from 27 November to 22 December 2026. For more market cities, see our Christmas markets 2026 guide, and for a side-by-side of December trips, where to go in December.
Northern lights (September to early April)
Auroras are a matter of latitude, darkness and clear sky. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s figures:
| Where | How often auroras appear (clear nights) |
|---|---|
| Kilpisjärvi, far northwest | About 75% of nights |
| Lapland resorts: Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä | Roughly 50% of nights |
| Central Finland: Oulu, Kuusamo | Roughly 25% of nights |
| South coast: Helsinki, Turku | About once a month |
The institute puts the best window at 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. local time, and the best months at September to October and February to March. Summer nights are too light for auroras anywhere in Lapland. Cloud is the real enemy, so give yourself at least three or four nights in the north. If you are weighing up destinations, our Iceland guide is the other classic aurora trip in Europe.
Polar night and daylight
Rovaniemi is just south of the Arctic Circle, so it never quite gets polar night: the sun is up for about 3 hours 45 minutes on 1 December 2026 and about 2 hours 14 minutes on 21 December, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. In Utsjoki, at the top of Finland, the sun does not rise at all from about late November to mid-January. Plan outdoor activities around midday, and expect long blue twilight rather than total darkness.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is Helsinki’s season: highs around 19 to 22°C, ferries to the islands, and long evenings. In Rovaniemi the sun does not set from around 6 June to 7 July. August is the wettest month in both cities, with around 68 to 81 mm of rain.
How much does a day in Finland cost?
Finland is not cheap, but its transport and the big Lapland experiences have clear published prices.
| Item (2026) | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki single ticket, zones AB | from 3.30 euros | HSL |
| Helsinki single ticket, zones ABC (covers the airport) | from 4.50 euros | HSL |
| Helsinki day ticket, zones ABC | 12.80 euros for 24 hours | HSL |
| Night train cabin, Helsinki to Lapland | from 59 euros | VR |
| Rovaniemi Airport Express bus | 8 euros one way | Airport Express |
| Musher-driven husky ride, Santa Claus Village | 63 euros (adult) | Santa’s Husky Rides |
| Short reindeer sleigh ride (400 m) | from 30 euros | Santa Claus Reindeer |
The cost that surprises people is December accommodation in Rovaniemi, where a short peak meets a small supply of rooms. Price your nights as soon as you have dates, and compare the cheapest European countries to visit if Finland stretches the budget.
Getting around Finland
Entry rules, money and staying connected
Entry: Finland is in the Schengen area, so non-EU visitors count their days under the Schengen 90/180 rule. The EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers at the external border; our EES and ETIAS guide explains what to expect.
Money: Finland uses the euro. Cards and contactless payments are the norm, and some services, such as Rovaniemi’s Airport Express bus, take no cash at all. When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros.
What to pack for Lapland: layers beat bulk. Start with a thermal base layer, add a packable down jacket and insulated winter boots, and consider heated gloves for long aurora nights.
Data: a travel eSIM gets you online on landing; see the best eSIM for Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to visit Finland?
It depends on the trip. March is the best month for Lapland, with deep snow, longer days and what the Finnish Meteorological Institute calls the best aurora odds in the north. December is the month for Santa and Christmas in Rovaniemi. For Helsinki and the lakes, July is warmest, with average highs of about 22°C in the capital.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Finland?
From September to early April, on clear nights between about 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. local time. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names September to October and February to March as the best months, and says auroras appear on roughly 50% of nights in Lapland resorts such as Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä, against about once a month in Helsinki.
How cold is Lapland in winter?
Very cold. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991-2020 normals for Rovaniemi Airport give average January highs of minus 7.3°C and lows of minus 13.5°C, with nights below minus 10°C on about 20 days of an average January. The record low there is minus 38.1°C, set in January 1999, so pack thermal layers, insulated boots and warm gloves.
Does Rovaniemi have polar night?
No. Rovaniemi sits just south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun still rises in midwinter, though only briefly: on 21 December 2026 it is up for about 2 hours 14 minutes, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. True polar night is further north: in Utsjoki the sun does not rise from about late November to mid-January.
How do I get from Helsinki to Rovaniemi?
By train or plane. VR’s daytime InterCity trains take about 8 to 8.5 hours, and the overnight Santa Claus Express takes about 12 hours, with private cabins from 59 euros. Finnair flies the route daily, and Rovaniemi Airport sits about 3 km from Santa Claus Village, with the Airport Express bus at 8 euros one way.
What currency does Finland use, and are cards accepted?
Finland uses the euro. Cards and contactless payments are widely used, and some services take no cash at all: Rovaniemi’s Airport Express bus only accepts cards or prebooked tickets. If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros, because the conversion rate is usually worse.
