Cyprus is the easternmost island of the EU and the sunniest winter option on the Mediterranean, with Roman mosaics, a mountain range that gets real snow, and a coastline that stays swimmable well into autumn. This guide covers the Republic of Cyprus: when to go, which trip each season suits, what it costs and how to get around. All prices and rules below were checked on 8 October 2026.
Cyprus month by month
The climate is hot and dry from mid-May to mid-October, with mild, wetter winters from December to February. The figures are Cyprus Department of Meteorology averages for 2002-2011 as published on the WMO World Weather Information Service: Nicosia for the inland capital, Paphos Airport for the west coast.

Best time to visit Cyprus by trip type
Winter sun (December to February)
Cyprus is the warmest Mediterranean island in winter, but it is mild, not beach-hot. Paphos averages 19.6°C by day in December, 17.7°C in January and 17.6°C in February, and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism counts an average of about six hours of bright sunshine a day even in December and January. That is ideal weather for the mosaics, the coast path and day trips, with hotels at their cheapest. For a beach-warm January, the Canaries are the better pick: our winter sun in Europe guide compares the two by the met-office numbers.
Our Paphos city guide has the sights, fees and the best areas to stay for a winter trip.
Snow and skiing in the Troodos (January to March)
The Troodos range rises behind Limassol and Paphos, and snow usually arrives before Christmas. At Prodromos, one of the highest villages, the January average is 6.9°C by day and 1.0°C at night. The Cyprus Ski Club runs a chairlift and three T-bars on Mount Olympus (1,951 metres), usually from the beginning of January to the end of March, and its runs suit beginners as well as advanced skiers. The slopes are about an hour’s drive from Limassol and Nicosia, so a snow day fits into a coast-based trip. Pack a warm layer: see our packable down jackets guide.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is green and the best season for walking the Akamas peninsula, the Avakas Gorge and the Troodos nature trails. May is the best all-round month, with Paphos averaging 24.8°C before the summer crowds.
Summer (June to September)
Beach season: Paphos averages 28 to 31°C and the sea reaches around 27°C in August, while inland Nicosia averages 37.5°C in July and August.
Autumn (October to November)
October is the island’s sweet spot. Paphos still averages 26.8°C, the sea stays above 22°C until November, and the archaeological sites are quieter. November keeps going with around 23°C on the coast, which makes Cyprus one of the best places to go in November.
Where to stay in Cyprus
Paphos is the best base for a first trip: it has the UNESCO-listed archaeological park, the harbour, its own airport and easy day trips to Aphrodite’s Rock, the Akamas peninsula and the Troodos. Stay in Kato Paphos, the lower town by the harbour, to walk to the mosaics and the seafront. Limassol suits travellers who want a bigger city and the Troodos within reach; Larnaca is closest to the main airport; Ayia Napa and Protaras are the summer beach resorts of the east; Nicosia is the capital and the base for museums and the old town inside its Venetian walls.
How much does Cyprus cost per day?

Getting around Cyprus
By bus. Cyprus has no railway or metro. The island has four kinds of bus service: airport shuttles linking every town with Larnaca and Paphos airports, intercity buses between the main towns, urban buses in each city and rural buses with two or three runs a day. Kapnos Airport Shuttle runs Paphos Airport to Nicosia and Larnaca, and in Paphos itself, Pafos Buses (OSYPA) charges 2 euros for a single ticket and 6.50 euros for a day ticket, paid to the driver.
By car. A rental car is the easiest way to reach the Troodos villages, the Akamas peninsula and the smaller beaches. Traffic drives on the left, four-lane motorways link Nicosia with Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa, and rental cars carry red plates whose numbers often start with Z. Forest roads are often unsurfaced, so drive them with care after rain. Local agencies often undercut the big brands here: see our LocalRent review.
Entry requirements, money and connectivity
Entry. Cyprus is in the EU but not yet fully in the Schengen area. It applies its own short-stay rule of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and time spent there does not use up your Schengen days: see our Schengen 90/180 rule guide. EU, Swiss, Icelandic, Liechtenstein and Norwegian citizens can enter with a national identity card that carries a photo. According to the Cyprus government, many travellers holding a valid two-entry or multiple-entry Schengen visa do not need a separate Cyprus visa for stays of up to 90 days, but check your nationality on the official list. Cyprus does not run the EU’s Entry/Exit System; ETIAS, once it starts, will cover it: our EES and ETIAS guide tracks both.
Crossing points. This guide covers the areas under the control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism notes that crossings to the areas not under its effective control are possible only at designated crossing points, under the rules in force at the time, and advises checking official guidance first.
Money. Cyprus has used the euro since 1 January 2008. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, and contactless payment works at nearly all card terminals.
Language. Greek and Turkish are the official languages, and English is widely spoken.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Cyprus?
April to May and October to November are the best months for most trips. Cyprus Department of Meteorology averages put Paphos at about 22 to 27°C by day in those months, warm enough for the beach in October without the heat of July and August, when Nicosia averages 37.5°C. December to February is the time for mild winter sun, and January to March for snow on the Troodos mountains.
Is Cyprus warm in winter?
Mild rather than hot. Paphos averages 19.6°C by day in December and 17.7°C in January, with nights around 9 to 11°C, according to Cyprus Department of Meteorology figures. January is the wettest month at about 92 mm of rain in Paphos, and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism puts the sea at 16 to 17°C from January to March: good for sightseeing and coast walks, too cool for most swimmers.
Is Cyprus in the Schengen area?
No. Cyprus is an EU member, but it is not yet fully in the Schengen area, so it runs its own short-stay rule of up to 90 days in any 180-day period and its days do not count towards your Schengen allowance. EU citizens can enter with a national identity card. According to the Cyprus government, many holders of a valid two-entry or multiple-entry Schengen visa do not need a separate Cyprus visa for stays of up to 90 days.
Can you ski in Cyprus?
Yes. The Cyprus Ski Club runs four lifts on Mount Olympus, at 1,951 metres the highest point of the Troodos range, and the season usually lasts from the beginning of January to the end of March. All runs suit beginners as well as intermediate and advanced skiers. The slopes are about an hour’s drive from Limassol and Nicosia.
How do you get around Cyprus without a car?
By bus. Cyprus has no railway, but intercity buses link the main towns daily, airport shuttles connect every town with Larnaca and Paphos airports, and urban buses run in each city. In Paphos a single ticket costs 2 euros, or 3 euros after 21:00. If you do rent a car, remember that traffic in Cyprus drives on the left.
How much does a trip to Cyprus cost per day?
As a rough guide, around 70 to 100 euros a day on a budget and around 130 to 200 euros mid-range, with winter hotel rooms in Kato Paphos from around 60 euros a night. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism lists a cappuccino at 4 to 4.50 euros and a fixed-menu lunch at 12 to 14 euros, and the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park costs 4.50 euros.

For winter sun, book the room first: the best-value Kato Paphos hotels near the harbour go early for Christmas and New Year. For spring or autumn, compare a few dates in May and October.
