St. Anton sits at about 1,300 metres on the Tyrol side of the Arlberg pass, and it trades on one thing: a huge, steep, snow-sure ski area joined to Lech, Zürs and Stuben by lifts. Interest is climbing fast for this winter, with HomeToGo’s 2026 holiday report showing Christmas searches for the Arlberg up 279%. Dates, prices and train times below were checked on 29 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit St. Anton?
Mid-January to mid-March is the most reliable window: the village has snow on the ground almost every day, and the days are getting longer. December is festive but darker, and early April brings spring snow and the cheaper Wedel and Sun weeks.
| Month | Average high / low | Precipitation | Days with snow cover | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 5.9°C / -2.6°C | 74 mm | about 13 | Lifts still closed; the season opens on 2 December |
| December | 1.1°C / -6.3°C | 90 mm | about 25 | Wedel and Sun prices until 18 December, then peak season |
| January | 1.1°C / -7.8°C | 86 mm | about 30 | The coldest month, snow almost every day on the ground |
| February | 3.2°C / -7.2°C | 70 mm | about 28 | School-holiday crowds, cold nights |
| March | 7.1°C / -3.4°C | 80 mm | about 25 | Longer, brighter days on good snow |
| April | 11.6°C / 0.2°C | 52 mm | about 9 | Spring snow; lifts close on 18 April 2027 |
| July | 21.8°C / 9.7°C | 146 mm | none | Hiking season, among the wettest months |
Temperatures and precipitation are 1991-2020 averages we calculated from GeoSphere Austria’s monthly records for the St. Anton am Arlberg station at 1,304 metres; snow-cover days average the years in that period with snow records. The ski area climbs far higher than the village, so pack for real cold: our guides to thermal base layers, heated gloves, packable down jackets and winter boots cover what works.

A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

St. Anton is not a cheap ski week. Compare it with the resorts in our cheapest ski resorts in Europe guide, and read ski gear to buy before you rent before you pay resort rental rates for everything.
Where should you stay in St. Anton?
The lifts start in the village, so the choice is mostly about walking distance and price.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Village centre, near the station | Arriving by train, walking to the Galzigbahn and the shops | The busiest and most expensive streets |
| Nasserein | The Nassereinbahn gondola, the Gampen toboggan run, families | A walk or bus ride into the centre in the evening |
| St. Christoph | Staying high on the pass, right on the slopes | Few hotels and very little in the evening |
| Pettneu, Schnann and Flirsch | Lower prices down the valley | You ride the ski bus every day |
Rooms are scarce in peak season. A Booking.com search on 29 October 2026 for a mid-January weekend showed only six properties in St. Anton itself still available, with two-night totals for two adults from about €870. Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays fill first. Compare St. Anton hotel prices for your dates as soon as your week is fixed.
How do you get to St. Anton and around it?
St. Anton sits on ÖBB’s Arlberg line, so the train is the easiest way in.
Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180-day rule applies, and the EU Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the external border. You pay in euros.
What should you not miss in St. Anton?

| Gampen toboggan run | Gondola ticket | 4 km down 500 metres in about 15 minutes; open 11.15 am to 4.15 pm |

- The RUN of FAME: Ski Arlberg calls it the longest continuous ski circuit in the Alps. It runs from St. Anton and the Rendl via Stuben, Zürs, Lech and Schröcken to Warth and back, over the Arlberg, Flexen and Hochtannberg passes, entirely on skis and lifts. It is rated advanced.
- After skiing, keep it simple: a café stop in the village, a long sauna at ARLBERG WellCom, or the toboggan run and a meal at the Gampen restaurant at its start.
- Stanton Ski Open: free ski and snowboard testing, live music and food trucks from 4 to 6 December 2026, with free entry to the festival grounds.
What day trips can you take from St. Anton?
- Lech and Zürs on skis: the Ski Arlberg pass covers both, and the lifts link them to St. Anton through Stuben, so a full day of skiing can loop around the whole area.
- Innsbruck: about 1 hour 10 minutes by direct train, for the old town and a city day when the wind closes the high lifts.
- Salzburg: a long trip by rail, so better as a stop on the way in or out than a day trip. See our Salzburg guide.
What can go wrong in St. Anton?
- Avalanches off-piste. The 200 km of off-piste descents are not controlled ski runs. Read the Euregio avalanche bulletin for Tyrol at avalanche.report, published by the avalanche warning services of Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino, before you leave the marked runs, and go with a qualified guide.
- Rescue costs. Ski Arlberg sells the Arlberg Safety Card at its pass desks, which reimburses rescue costs after a ski accident anywhere in the area under its terms. Check your travel insurance covers winter sports too.
- Early and late snow. Both season dates come with “limited operation possible”, so a trip in the first or last week may not have every lift open.
- The price creep. Passes, rentals and mountain lunches add up. Buy your pass online once your dates are fixed, and bring your own base layers and gloves.
- Emergency numbers: mountain rescue 140, ambulance 144, and the European emergency number 112.
How many days do you need in St. Anton?
Plan five to seven days for a ski trip: enough to learn St. Anton’s own runs, cross to Stuben, Zürs and Lech, ride the RUN of FAME on a clear day, and keep a spare day for a storm. For more of the country, read our Austria travel guide; for comparison with a Swiss resort, see Zermatt, and for wider planning, the ski travel guide.

Ski Arlberg’s six-day pass costs 468 euros in peak season, so a week is where the multi-day prices make most sense.

If you already have a package with lift pass and hotel, you are set. If you are booking separately, fix the room first: the lift pass can be bought online later, but the village fills early.
