Quick Answer

Udaipur is worth two to three days for its lakes and palaces, and the best time to visit is October to March, when India Meteorological Department normals put average highs at about 25 to 34°C with almost no rain; May averages above 40°C, and July and August bring the monsoon. The City Palace Museum charges a single 400-rupee adult ticket for Indian and foreign visitors alike, according to the museum’s published FAQ, and Lake Pichola boat excursions from Rameshwar Ghat, which stop at Jag Mandir island, cost around 600 rupees. Udaipur is the Rajasthan city people add to a Golden Triangle trip when they want to slow down. Instead of desert forts and traffic, you get a white palace rising from a lake, ghats where the old city meets the water, and hills on every side. The trip comes down to three choices: the season, which side of the lake you sleep on, and whether you give a day to the forts outside town. Prices below were checked on 10 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Udaipur?

October to March. Udaipur sits in the Aravalli hills, a little milder than the plains around Delhi and Agra, and the season is set by heat and the monsoon.

MonthAverage high / low (IMD 1981-2010)RainWhat to expect
October33.5°C / 17.0°C12.8 mmWarm days, the season opens
November29.6°C / 12.0°C11.2 mmIdeal sightseeing weather

January24.6°C / 7.3°C2.4 mmCoolest month, bring a warm layer
February27.7°C / 9.6°C2.7 mmDry and pleasant
March33.4°C / 15.4°C1.4 mmWarming up by the end of the month
April to June37.6 to 40.2°C highs6.8 to 81.3 mmHot; sightsee early and late
July to September30.5 to 32.5°C highs94.8 to 208.8 mmMonsoon; the lakes fill, fewer visitors

Figures are the India Meteorological Department’s 1981-2010 climatological table for Udaipur. Winter is the clear winner: dry, sunny days and evenings cool enough for a jacket. The monsoon has its fans, because the lakes are at their fullest afterwards, but July and August each average more than 200 mm of rain.

Where should you stay in Udaipur?

Udaipur hotels cluster around Lake Pichola, and the real choice is between the busy old city on the east bank and the calmer side across the water.

AreaBest forTrade-off
Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat (old city)Walking to the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and Bagore ki Haveli, rooftop lake viewsNarrow, busy lanes, little parking
Hanuman Ghat and Ambrai (west bank)Quieter guesthouses and the best views back to the palaceA footbridge walk or short ride to the main sights
Fateh Sagar Lake areaNewer and larger hotels, a lakeside promenadeYou need an auto-rickshaw for the old city
Lake Pichola islands and lakefront palacesHeritage palace hotels on the waterThe highest prices in the city

First visit? Book in the old city near Lal Ghat or Gangaur Ghat, ideally with a rooftop, so the palace and the evening show at Bagore ki Haveli are a short walk away. Compare Udaipur hotel prices and check whether a “lake view” room actually faces the water.

  • Lake Pichola by boat: the excursions from Rameshwar Ghat were listed at 600 rupees for an adult and 300 for a child on the 2025-26 tariff, with sunset trips at 800 rupees. In winter, regular trips run from 10:00 to 14:00 and sunset trips until 17:00. The operator reserves the right to change times and prices, so check at the jetty.
  • Jag Mandir: the 17th-century island palace is where the boat stops. You can walk the gardens and the heritage exhibition, then take any later boat back.
  • Bagore ki Haveli: run by the West Zone Cultural Centre. The museum shows the rooms and costumes of an 18th-century noble house, and the Dharohar show brings together folk dances from across Rajasthan; buy its ticket at the haveli on the day.
  • Sajjangarh: the palace sits inside Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, managed by the Rajasthan Forest Department, so you pay the sanctuary entry and a vehicle charge at the gate below the hill.
  • Food: try dal baati churma, kachori and a full Rajasthani thali at busy local places in the old city, and finish the evening with a chai on a rooftop above the ghats.

What day trips can you take from Udaipur?

Kumbhalgarh is the big one. Its fort is one of the six Hill Forts of Rajasthan on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and its walls run for kilometres over the hills. Ranakpur, on the same road, has a white marble Jain temple famous for its carved pillars; it is a working temple, so dress modestly and check the visiting hours for non-worshippers before you set off. Most people combine the two in one long day by car. Chittorgarh, another of the UNESCO hill forts, is a separate day trip to the east.

What goes wrong on an Udaipur trip?

  • Coming in May or June. Average highs above 40°C make the palace terraces and the boat rides hard work in the middle of the day.
  • Assuming the lakes are always full. After a weak monsoon, water levels in Lake Pichola can drop. If the view is the reason for a lake-view room, look at recent guest photos before you book.
  • Rushing Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur. Both are a long drive away, and squeezing them into a half day means seeing neither. Give them a full day.
  • Commission stops. Drivers and guides may steer you to painting and textile shops. Say at the start that you do not want shopping stops.
  • Sunset at the wrong place. Popular viewpoints like Sajjangarh and Ambrai Ghat fill up; arrive early in peak season.

How many days do you need in Udaipur?

Two to three days is right. Spend the first on the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and a Lake Pichola boat ride, the evening at Bagore ki Haveli, and the second on Fateh Sagar, Saheliyon ki Bari garden and the sunset from Sajjangarh. A third day covers Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur.

Udaipur is the classic extension of the Golden Triangle. Jaipur is the natural stop before it, Agra and Delhi complete the loop, and our India itinerary shows how to fit Udaipur into a 10-day trip.
