San Francisco packs a lot into a small, hilly peninsula: a prison island, a famous bridge you can walk across for free, and cable cars that still climb the steepest streets. Most of the city is reachable on foot and by Muni, so you can skip the rental car until you head out of town. Fares and fees below were checked on 9 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit San Francisco?
Early autumn. The city’s summer is cool and often foggy, and its warmest weather comes in September and October. Winter is mild but wet.
| Month | Average high / low, Downtown (NOAA) | Rain | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 14.4°C / 8.3°C | about 121 mm, the wettest | Cool, rainy spells, holiday lights |
| January | 14.3°C / 8.1°C | about 112 mm | Mild days between storms, lower hotel prices |
| February | 15.8°C / 8.8°C | about 111 mm | Green hills, still wet |
| March | 16.7°C / 9.4°C | about 80 mm | Drying out, clearer days |
| April–June | 17.2–19.2°C / 9.8–11.7°C | 5–41 mm | Mostly dry, fog building by June |
| July–August | 19.1–19.9°C / 12.4–13.1°C | 0–2 mm | Dry but foggy and windy, busiest months |
| September–October | 21.0–21.2°C / 12.4–13.1°C | 3–24 mm | Warmest and clearest, the best window |
| November | 17.6°C / 10.4°C | about 66 mm | Rain returns, fewer crowds |
Figures are NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the San Francisco Downtown station. The airport station, south of the city, is slightly warmer by day in summer (about 23°C in August). If you want real winter sun, Los Angeles is about 5°C warmer in January and Honolulu is warmer still; see our where to go in December guide for more options.
Where should you stay in San Francisco?
Neighbourhoods change block by block here, so the exact street matters as much as the area.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Union Square | First-timers: Powell Street cable cars, BART, shopping, the most hotels | Edges onto the Tenderloin to the south-west, where street drug use and homelessness are visible; pick a hotel north or east of the square |
| Fisherman’s Wharf | The Alcatraz ferry at Pier 33, the waterfront, families | Touristy and pricey for what you get; quiet after dark |
| North Beach and Chinatown | Cafés, bakeries, walkable to the Wharf and downtown | Older, smaller rooms; hilly streets |
| Marina and Cow Hollow | A calmer base near the Golden Gate Bridge and Presidio | Few rail links; you rely on Muni buses |
| SoMa | Newer hotels, the Moscone Center, often weekend deals | Some empty blocks at night, especially around Sixth Street |
First trip? Union Square is the practical choice for transport, as long as you book north of Market Street, while North Beach suits travellers who want a neighbourhood feel. Compare San Francisco hotel prices by area .
How do you get to and around San Francisco?
San Francisco International Airport sits about 30 minutes south of downtown by train. Flying on to Hawaii? See cheap flights from San Francisco to Honolulu, and our United Airlines review, since SFO is one of United’s hubs.
What should you not miss in San Francisco?
| Sight | Price (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Alcatraz | Day tour $47.95 adults, $45.15 seniors 62+, $29.15 ages 5–11; night tour $59.65 adults | Only via Alcatraz City Cruises from Pier 33; tickets open 90 days ahead; allow a few hours on the island |
| Golden Gate Bridge | Free to walk | Pedestrians use the east sidewalk, open 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in winter and to 9 p.m. in summer |
| Cable cars | $9 a ride | The two Powell lines run from Powell and Market to the Fisherman’s Wharf area; the California line runs to Van Ness Avenue |
| Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park | Paid timed entry; free Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9–10 a.m. | Last entry 4:30 p.m. from November to February; reserve a time slot in advance |
| Golden Gate Park | Free | Walk or cycle from the park west to Ocean Beach |
| Chinatown and North Beach | Free to walk | Bakeries, dim sum and cafés, a short walk from Union Square |
Alcatraz is the one sight to book first: the National Park Service says the weather on the island changes quickly, so bring a light jacket even on a sunny day. For the bridge, the classic viewpoints are on the San Francisco side near the Presidio; walking the full span and back takes an afternoon, and the sidewalk closes at 6:30 p.m. in winter.
What day trips can you take from San Francisco?
- Muir Woods. Old-growth redwoods across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. Entry costs $15 per person aged 16 and over, and every car and shuttle rider needs a reservation on GoMuirWoods.com ($10 to park a standard car, $4 for an adult shuttle ticket).
- Yosemite. Better as an overnight trip than a day trip, given the drive. Yosemite dropped its timed-entry reservation system for 2026, but entry is $35 per car for seven days, plus a $100 per person fee for non-US residents aged 16 and over unless they hold the $250 America the Beautiful nonresident pass.
What goes wrong on a San Francisco trip?
- Packing for California sun in July. Summer days at the Downtown station average under 20°C, and the fog makes it feel colder. Bring a warm layer in every season.
- Leaving anything in a parked car. Car break-ins are common at viewpoints and in tourist areas. Leave the car empty, or skip renting one while you stay in the city.
- Booking the cheapest hotel without checking the block. Some low-priced hotels sit in the Tenderloin or on the rougher stretches of Market and Sixth Street. Check the exact address before you pay.
- Expecting to buy Alcatraz tickets on the day. Day tours regularly sell out; book on the official Alcatraz City Cruises site, not a reseller.
- Missing the bridge’s closing time. The pedestrian sidewalk shuts at 6:30 p.m. in winter, so a sunset walk needs planning.
- Using a copycat ESTA site. Visa Waiver Program travellers need an approved ESTA, which costs $40.27 on the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov site.

How many days do you need in San Francisco?
Three to four days covers it: Alcatraz and the waterfront on day one, the Golden Gate Bridge, Presidio and Golden Gate Park on day two, cable cars, Chinatown and North Beach on day three, and Muir Woods on day four. Combining coasts? New York is a cross-country flight away, and Los Angeles is the obvious pairing down the coast.

If a package already covers your hotel, you don’t need this part. If you’re booking flights and a room separately, look at September and October first for the best weather, or January for lower hotel prices.
