New York is enormous, but a first trip mostly happens in Manhattan, with one or two rides out to Brooklyn or Queens. The decisions that matter are the month, the neighbourhood you sleep in and which paid sights you book ahead. Every date and price below was checked on 4 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit New York?
Spring and autumn have the most comfortable weather. Late November to late December is the Christmas season: cold, sometimes snowy, and the busiest and most expensive time of the winter.
| Month | Average high / low (°C) | Average high / low (°F) | Precipitation (mm) | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 12.2 / 5.6 | 54 / 42 | 91 | Holiday season opens; tree arrives 7 November |
| December | 6.8 / 1.0 | 44 / 34 | 111 | Tree lighting 2 December, windows, rinks, markets |
| January | 4.2 / -2.3 | 40 / 28 | 92 | Coldest month; quieter after the holidays |
| February | 5.7 / -1.4 | 42 / 30 | 81 | Snowiest month on average; rinks still open |
| March to April | 9.9 to 16.6 / 2.1 to 7.5 | 50 to 62 / 36 to 46 | 104 to 109 | Spring arrives in April; Central Park blossoms |
| May to June | 21.9 to 26.5 / 12.8 to 18.0 | 71 to 80 / 55 to 64 | 101 to 115 | Warm, long days, often the best weather |
| July to August | 28.5 to 29.4 / 20.5 to 21.2 | 83 to 85 / 69 to 70 | 116 to 117 | Hot and humid, with summer storms |
| September to October | 24.6 to 18.1 / 16.8 to 10.8 | 76 to 65 / 62 to 51 | 109 to 111 | Warm September, crisp October; a strong pick |
Figures are NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Central Park. Snow falls mostly from December to March: Central Park averages about 76 cm (30 inches) a season, with February the snowiest month, so a trip in that window can include a snowy day or two.
New York at Christmas in 2026
New York does Christmas with lights, shop windows, ice rinks and outdoor markets of food and crafts rather than one big traditional market.
| Event | 2026 dates | Entry |
|---|---|---|
| Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree | Arrives 7 Nov; lighting ceremony 2 Dec 2026 | Free to see; The Rink from around $22 |
| Bryant Park Winter Village rink | 28 Oct 2026 to 28 Feb 2027, open daily | Free admission; skate rental extra |
| Bryant Park Holiday Shops | 28 Oct 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | Free |
| Union Square Holiday Market | Ran 13 Nov to 24 Dec in 2025; 2026 dates not yet published | Free |
Bryant Park’s rink opens 8:00 to 22:00, staying open until midnight from 19 November to 3 January, and its Holiday Shops are open daily, including holidays. Rockefeller Center was still to publish its full 2026 tree details when we checked, so confirm viewing hours on its site before you build an evening around them. Winter in New York is colder than in London or Paris, so dress for it: winter boots for travel, a packable down jacket and heated gloves make long evenings outside comfortable.
Where should you stay in New York?
Most visitors stay in Manhattan, but the subway makes parts of Queens and Brooklyn practical too.
| Area | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Midtown (Times Square, Rockefeller Center) | First-timers, Broadway, walking to the tree, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue | Highest prices and the biggest crowds in December |
| Chelsea and Greenwich Village | Calmer streets, the High Line, cafés, good subway links | Fewer large hotels; rooms can be small |
| Upper West Side | Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, a residential feel | A subway ride to Lower Manhattan |
| Lower Manhattan (Financial District) | The Statue of Liberty ferry, the 9/11 Memorial, the free Staten Island Ferry | Quiet in the evenings |
| Long Island City (Queens) | Often cheaper rooms one or two subway stops from Midtown | Less to do on the doorstep |
| Brooklyn (Downtown, Williamsburg) | Food, neighbourhoods, skyline views | Longer rides to the Midtown sights |
First time and short on days? Stay in Midtown or Chelsea, or in Long Island City if Manhattan is priced up for the holidays. Compare New York hotel prices by area before you commit, and expect the final bill to be higher than the nightly rate: New York City adds a hotel room occupancy tax, state and city sales tax and a $1.50 a night state hotel unit fee, according to the city’s Department of Finance.
How do you get to and around New York?
JFK is the main international airport, in Queens, and it has three sensible ways into Manhattan.
Most visitors who fly in under the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA first: see the USA guide for entry rules. Heading south afterwards? What should you not miss in New York?
| Sight | Adult entry (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| The Metropolitan Museum of Art | $30 | Closed Wednesdays; open to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays |
| MoMA | $30 | Open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas; Fridays to 20:30 |
| Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island | Ferry $26 | Buy only from Statue City Cruises, the one authorised ferry; book ahead |
| Staten Island Ferry | Free | Runs 24 hours a day and passes the Statue of Liberty |
| Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and The Rink | Tree free; skating from around $22 | Go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds |
| Central Park | Free | Combine it with the Met on Fifth Avenue |
The Met is closed on Thanksgiving, 25 December and 1 January, and MoMA on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, so plan the museum day around the holidays. The National Park Service warns about unauthorised ticket sellers around The Battery: the ferry ticket from Statue City Cruises is the only one that lands you on the islands.
Day trips from New York
- Philadelphia and Washington, DC: Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast Regional trains run south from Penn Station; Philadelphia works as a day trip.
- Boston: the same corridor heads north to Boston, better as an overnight than a day trip.
- New England in autumn: in late September and October the foliage season starts a few hours north; see our New England fall foliage guide.
What goes wrong on a New York winter trip?
- Planning around Thanksgiving and 25 December. Museums close on those days and the weeks between them are the busiest of the year, so check opening days before you fix the dates.
- Underdressing. A December day of about 7°C with wind between tall buildings feels colder than it reads; a thermal base layer helps on long evenings at the rinks and markets.
- Crowds at the tree and in Times Square. These are pickpocket territory in December; keep your phone and wallet in a zipped crossbody bag worn in front.
- Paying twice for transport. Switching between cards or between a phone and a card breaks the weekly fare cap.
- Budgeting the room rate only. Hotel taxes and fees, sales tax and tips are added on top of most prices you see.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in 2026?
Rockefeller Center says the 2026 tree arrives on the plaza on 7 November and the Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on 2 December 2026. The plaza is very crowded on lighting night, so a weekday morning visit in the following weeks is the calmer way to see the tree. Skating on The Rink below it is ticketed, from around $22.
What is the best time to visit New York?
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months, with average highs of about 17 to 27°C in Central Park, according to NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals. For Christmas lights, window displays and ice rinks, go from late November to late December, when highs average about 7 to 12°C. January and February are the coldest and quietest months.
Where should I stay in New York for the first time?
Midtown Manhattan puts you within walking distance of Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue, but it is busy and pricey in December. Chelsea and Greenwich Village are calmer and still central. Lower Manhattan suits the Statue of Liberty ferry, and Long Island City in Queens is often cheaper, a short subway ride from Midtown.
How do I get from JFK Airport to Manhattan?
The cheapest way is the AirTrain ($8.75) to Jamaica or Howard Beach, then the subway ($3), for $11.75 in total. The AirTrain plus the Long Island Rail Road is faster, about 20 minutes from Jamaica to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. A yellow taxi between JFK and Manhattan costs a flat $70 plus surcharges, tolls and tip.
How much does the subway cost in New York?
The MTA fare is $3 a ride on the subway and local buses, with one free transfer within two hours. Tap the same contactless card, phone or OMNY Card every time and you never pay more than $35 in a 7-day period for subway and local bus rides. Express buses cost $7.25.
How many days do you need in New York?
Four to five days covers New York well: a day for Midtown and Rockefeller Center, a museum day at the Met or MoMA, a day for Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, and time for Central Park, Brooklyn and, in season, the holiday markets. Add a day for a train trip to Philadelphia or Washington.
Start planning your New York trip
If you are going for Christmas, aim for a weekday stay between the tree lighting on 2 December and mid-December, before the busiest holiday weeks. Compare a few dates before you book.
