Quick Answer

Miami is worth it for winter sun: from December to April, NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Miami International Airport show average highs of about 25 to 29°C and only around 46 to 85 mm of rain a month, while June to September brings about 190 to 270 mm and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Stay in South Beach for the Art Deco district and Ocean Drive, Mid-Beach for quieter hotels on the same sand, or Brickell and Downtown for Metrorail and lower prices. From the airport, Metrobus Route 150, the Miami Beach Airport Express, runs from the airport’s Metrorail station to South Beach. Four to five days covers the beach, the Miami Design Preservation League’s two-hour Art Deco walking tour ($50), Little Havana, Vizcaya and a day in Everglades National Park, where non-US residents pay a $100 surcharge on top of the $35 vehicle pass.

Miami is the warmest big city you can reach easily in a North American winter, and the one place on the US mainland where a January beach day is the normal plan, not a gamble. The trip comes down to three choices: the month, which side of Biscayne Bay you sleep on, and how you get to the Everglades. Fares and fees below were checked on 8 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Miami?

December to April. It is warm all year, so the real variables are rain, humidity and storms, and the dry season wins on all three.

Figures are NOAA’s 1991-2020 climate normals for the Miami International Airport station. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November; the National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic peak around 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A late-summer trip is cheaper for a reason: read our hurricane season travel guide before you book one.

Where should you stay in Miami?

Miami Beach is a barrier island across Biscayne Bay from the mainland city, and the bay is the real dividing line for your budget.

AreaBest forTrade-off
South BeachThe Art Deco district, Ocean Drive, Lummus Park beach, walkable restaurantsHighest room prices; loud and crowded at weekends
Mid-BeachBigger hotels on the same beach, a calmer feelFewer places to walk to; you rely on the trolley
Brickell and DowntownMetrorail and Metromover, Bayfront Park, usually lower pricesNo beach on the doorstep; a bus ride to the sand
Coconut Grove and Coral GablesLeafy streets, Vizcaya, a local feelFar from the beach; a car or ride-hail helps

First trip in winter and the beach is the point? Book South Beach, south of Lincoln Road, where the Art Deco Welcome Center, the beach and the Route 150 airport bus are all a short walk apart. On a tighter budget, stay in Brickell and treat the beach as a day trip. Compare Miami hotel prices by area .

The Art Deco district is the reason Miami Beach looks the way it does: pastel hotels, porthole windows and neon along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. The Miami Design Preservation League’s tour covers Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern buildings; walk Ocean Drive again after dark, when the neon comes on. Eat in Little Havana rather than on Ocean Drive, where the tourist menus cost more for less.

What day trips can you take from Miami?

  • Everglades National Park. Shark Valley is 25 miles west along US 41 (Tamiami Trail) from the Florida Turnpike. A paved 15-mile loop runs through the sawgrass, with an observation tower halfway, guided tram tours run by the park’s concessioner and bike hire on site. Entry is $35 per private vehicle or $20 per person on foot or by bike, both for seven days; non-US residents aged 16 and over pay $100 more each unless they hold the $250 non-resident annual pass. The park takes cards only.
  • Biscayne National Park. Mostly water and reef south of the city, with no entrance fee; boat trips and paddling start near Homestead.
  • The Florida Keys and Key West. The Overseas Highway is 113 miles long with 42 bridges, so Key West is a very long day or, better, an overnight trip.

What goes wrong on a Miami trip?

  • Booking the cheapest month without asking why. August to October is the hurricane peak and the wettest stretch of the year.
  • The Everglades surprise. The $100 non-resident surcharge applies per person, including on commercial tours. If you plan several US parks on one trip, price the $250 non-resident annual pass first.
  • Stranding yourself at Shark Valley. The park warns that ride-hail and taxi returns are hard to find out there; arrange the ride back with your driver or drive yourself.
  • Arriving at Vizcaya on a Tuesday. It is closed that day.
  • Forgetting tax and tips. US prices usually exclude sales tax, and tipping in sit-down restaurants is expected. Our USA guide explains both.
  • Using a copycat ESTA site. Visa Waiver Program travellers need an approved ESTA, which costs $40.27 on the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov site.

How many days do you need in Miami?

Four to five days covers it: a beach day and the Art Deco tour in South Beach, Little Havana and Wynwood, Vizcaya, and a full day in the Everglades. Add two days for Key West. Pairing Miami with a cold-weather city? New York is a short flight north and at its most festive in December; or fly across to Cancún for more Caribbean sand.

Yes, for most people. Miami International Airport averages highs of about 25.7°C in December, 24.6°C in January and 25.7°C in February, with lows around 16 to 18°C, according to NOAA. Expect the odd cooler, windy day when a cold front passes, so pack a light layer for evenings.

Mid-Beach is quieter on the same sand, linked by the free Miami Beach trolley. Brickell and Downtown are on Metrorail and usually cheaper, but you ride to the beach.

How do I get from Miami airport to South Beach?

Take the MIA Mover train from the terminal to the Miami International Airport Metrorail station, where Metrobus Route 150, the Miami Beach Airport Express, stops on the ground level. How much does it cost to visit the Everglades from Miami?

Everglades National Park charges $35 per private vehicle or $20 per person on foot or by bike, both valid for seven days. Non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 each unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass; the non-resident annual pass costs $250. The park is cashless, so bring a card.

How many days do you need in Miami?

Start planning your Miami trip

If a cruise or package already covers your stay, you don’t need this part. If you’re booking flights and a room separately, compare a few dates between January and April first, when the weather is most reliable and the holiday-week prices have passed.
