Quick Answer

Los Angeles is worth it as a mild winter city break: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Los Angeles International Airport show average highs of about 19°C from December to February, and almost no rain from May to October. December to February is the wettest stretch, at about 57 to 76 mm a month. Stay in Santa Monica for the beach and the Metro E Line, Hollywood for the B Line and first-timer sights, or Downtown for the most rail connections and usually lower prices. From the airport, the free LAX Shuttle runs to the LAX/Metro Transit Center for the C and K Lines on a $1.75 Metro fare, while the FlyAway bus to Union Station costs $12.75. Griffith Observatory and the Getty Center are both free to enter, though Getty parking is $25 per car. Plan four to five days, and get an ESTA ($40.27) on the official CBP site before you fly.

Los Angeles is not one city you walk around, it is a cluster of neighbourhoods joined by freeways, and the trip goes well or badly depending on where you sleep. The good news is that winter is a fine time to come, rail now reaches the airport, and two of the best sights cost nothing to enter. Fares and fees below were checked on 9 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Los Angeles?

Any month works. The coast stays mild all year, so the real choice is between a dry, warm late summer and a cooler, greener winter with a few rainy days.

For the winter-sun comparison, Miami runs about 5°C warmer in January; Los Angeles wins on dry late summers and culture. See our where to go in December and where to go in January guides for more winter options.

Griffith Observatory gives you the classic view over the city and the Hollywood Sign; go for sunset and stay after dark. Parking near the building is paid, limited and cards only, so the low-cost DASH Observatory/Los Feliz bus from Vermont/Sunset station on the Metro B Line is the stress-free option. At the Getty Center, the tram from the parking structure climbs to the hilltop museum, with gardens and art from the Middle Ages to today.

What day trips can you take from Los Angeles?

  • Malibu and the Getty Villa. The coast road north of Santa Monica passes beaches and the Villa’s Roman-style gardens; reserve your free Villa entry before you drive.
  • Anaheim theme parks. Disneyland Resort is in Orange County, south-east of Downtown; it is a full day on its own, so plan it as a separate day rather than a half-day add-on.
  • The coast north. Santa Barbara and the Central Coast make a good overnight trip if you have a car.

What goes wrong on a Los Angeles trip?

  • Planning the city like a walkable capital. Distances are large and traffic is heavy at peak hours. Group each day around one area and travel between areas outside rush hour.
  • Waiting at the curb for a ride app. At LAX, ride apps and taxis pick up only at LAX-it, not outside the terminals.
  • Turning up at Griffith or the Getty on a Monday. Griffith Observatory, the Getty Center and The Broad are all closed on Mondays; the Getty Villa closes on Tuesdays.
  • Driving to the Getty without the numbers. Parking is $25 a car before 3 p.m. and the fee is cashless.
  • Forgetting tax and tips. US prices usually exclude sales tax, and tipping in sit-down restaurants is expected; our USA guide explains both.
  • Using a copycat ESTA site. Visa Waiver Program travellers need an approved ESTA, which costs $40.27 on the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov site.

How many days do you need in Los Angeles?

Four to five days covers it: a beach day in Santa Monica and Venice, Hollywood and Griffith Observatory, Downtown and The Broad, the Getty Center, and a day for Malibu and the Getty Villa. Add a day for a theme park. Pairing Los Angeles with another city? New York is a cross-country flight away and at its most festive in December, and Honolulu is the warmer winter add-on across the Pacific.

If a package already covers your hotel, you don’t need this part. If you’re booking flights and a room separately, compare a few dates between October and April first, when the weather is still mild and the summer peak has passed.
