Chicago is the big American city that most visitors underrate: a skyline that taught the world how to build skyscrapers, two of the country’s great museums side by side on the lakefront, and neighbourhoods that are cheaper and calmer than New York’s. The questions are when to go, how to handle the cold if you go in winter, and where to sleep. Fares and fees below were checked on 10 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Chicago?
May to October for comfortable sightseeing, and late November to December if the Christmas market and the lights are the reason you are going.
| Month | Average high / low (NOAA) | Precipitation | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 2.6°C / -4.2°C | about 54 mm, 19 cm of snow | Christkindlmarket, ice rinks, holiday lights |
| January | -0.2°C / -7.3°C | about 51 mm, 29 cm of snow | The coldest month; lowest hotel prices |
| February | 2.1°C / -5.7°C | about 50 mm, 27 cm of snow | Still deep winter; indoor museum days |
| March | 8.3°C / -0.6°C | about 62 mm | Thaw begins; river cruises restart |
| April | 15.0°C / 4.6°C | about 95 mm | Mild, changeable, the occasional late snow |
| May | 21.4°C / 10.3°C | about 114 mm | Parks green up; the wettest month |
| June–August | 26.9–29.2°C / 16.0–19.1°C | 94–108 mm | Peak season: lakefront beaches, festivals, top prices |
| September | 24.2°C / 13.9°C | about 81 mm | Warm days, thinner crowds: the sweet spot |
| October | 17.1°C / 7.4°C | about 87 mm | Crisp and clear, autumn colour |
| November | 9.1°C / 1.2°C | about 61 mm | Grey and cool; markets open late in the month |
Figures are NOAA’s 1991-2020 climate normals for the Chicago O’Hare International Airport station. The thermometer only tells half the story in winter: wind off Lake Michigan drives the wind chill far below the air temperature, and the National Weather Service warns that exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes at a wind chill of -19°F (about -28°C). A winter trip needs a proper coat, a hat, gloves and boots with grip; our guides to the best packable down jackets, thermal base layers and winter boots for travel cover what to pack.
Comparing festive city breaks? Chicago sits alongside our where to go in December picks, and New York is the obvious pairing for a two-city Christmas trip.
Chicago at Christmas: the Christkindlmarket
The Christkindlmarket is a German-style holiday market and Chicago’s best-known winter event. In 2026 it runs at three locations, all free to enter:
- Daley Plaza (the Loop): 20 November to 24 December 2026, daily from 11 am to 8 pm Sunday to Thursday and 11 am to 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with special hours on Thanksgiving and other holidays.
- Gallagher Way (Wrigleyville): 20 November to 31 December 2026, from 3 pm to 9 pm Monday to Thursday, 11 am to 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 11 am to 7 pm on Sundays.
- Aurora, in the western suburbs, for those staying outside the city.
Go for the handmade ornaments, wooden toys and crafts, roasted nuts, pretzels and the lights after dark. Weekday afternoons are far calmer than Friday and Saturday evenings. A few minutes’ walk east, the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park ran from 21 November 2025 to early February 2026 last season: admission is free, online reservations are required and skate rental costs extra. The 2026-27 dates had not been announced when this page was checked.
Where should you stay in Chicago?
Downtown hotels cluster on both sides of the Chicago River, and that is where most first-time visitors should be.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The Loop | Millennium Park, the Art Institute, the Christkindlmarket, the most ‘L’ lines | Quiet after office hours; business-hotel feel |
| River North | Restaurants, the Riverwalk, a short walk to the Loop | Busy and pricier on weekends |
| Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile | Shopping, Navy Pier, family-friendly hotels | Touristy; fewer ‘L’ stops on the lake side |
| West Loop | Chicago’s best food streets, Union Station for trains | A walk or a train ride to the lakefront sights |
| Lincoln Park | Leafy streets, the free Lincoln Park Zoo, a local feel | A train or bus ride to downtown |
First trip, especially in winter? Book the Loop or River North, so the museums, the market and the river are walkable and you spend less time outside in the wind. January and February are the quietest months for tourism, so that is when to look for lower rates. Compare Chicago hotel prices by area .

What should you not miss in Chicago?
| Sight | Price (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Art Institute of Chicago | $32 adults, $26 seniors, students and teens 14–17; under-14s free | Closed Tuesdays; open until 8 pm on Thursdays |
| Field Museum | From $30 for visitors | Home of SUE the T. rex, on the Museum Campus |
| Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise | From $57, 90 minutes | Runs March to November, aboard First Lady |
| Millennium Park and Cloud Gate | Free | Combine with the ice rink in winter |
| Lincoln Park Zoo | Free, open every day | Gates open at 8 am |
| Chicago Riverwalk | Free | Best walked in spring, summer and autumn |
The architecture cruise is the single best introduction to the city: Chicago Architecture Center volunteer docents explain the buildings along all three branches of the river, and it is the main reason to visit between March and November. The Art Institute is one of the great art museums in North America, and the Field Museum’s natural history halls fill a cold afternoon on their own. Illinois residents get free days at both, so check the calendars if you live in the state.
Food is the other draw. Deep-dish pizza, Italian beef sandwiches and the Chicago-style hot dog are the classics; the West Loop and Pilsen are where locals eat out, and a coffee in a Loop café is the best way to warm up between sights in January.
What day trips can you take from Chicago?
- Milwaukee. Amtrak’s Hiawatha takes 1 hour 29 minutes from Chicago Union Station, with seven round trips a day (six on Sundays): easy for a museum day by Lake Michigan.
- Indiana Dunes National Park. Beaches and dunes on the lake’s southern shore, best from late spring to early autumn. A vehicle pass costs $25 and is valid for seven days.
- The suburbs at Christmas. The Aurora Christkindlmarket adds a second market day if one is not enough.
What goes wrong on a Chicago trip?
- Underestimating the wind chill. A -5°C day can feel far colder by the lake. Plan indoor stops and dress in layers from December to February.
- Trying to book a winter river cruise. The architecture cruise season runs from March to November only.
- Showing up at the Art Institute on a Tuesday. It is closed that day.
- Forgetting the O’Hare fare. The $5 fare is charged when you enter at O’Hare; a cheaper single only applies at other stations.
- Forgetting tax and tips. US prices usually exclude sales tax, and tipping in sit-down restaurants is expected. Our USA guide explains both.
- Using a copycat ESTA site. Visa Waiver Program travellers need an approved ESTA; apply only on the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov site.

How many days do you need in Chicago?
Three to four days covers it: Millennium Park, the Art Institute and the Riverwalk on day one; the Museum Campus and the Field Museum on day two; the architecture cruise in season, or the Christkindlmarket and the ice rink in December, on day three; and a neighbourhood day in Lincoln Park or the West Loop. Add a day for Milwaukee or the dunes.

How cold is Chicago in winter?
Very cold. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for O’Hare give January an average high of about -0.2°C and a low of about -7.3°C, with around 29 cm of snow in the month.
