Punta del Este sits on a small peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, so you get two very different beaches a few blocks apart. In January it is packed; in March it is a calm, warm beach town at a fraction of the price. The choices that matter are when you go, which side of the peninsula you sleep on, and how you get there. Prices and dates below were checked on 29 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Punta del Este?
Summer runs December to March. INUMET publishes no climate normal for Punta del Este itself, so the table uses its 1991-2020 normals for Carrasco, Montevideo’s airport station on the same coast.
| Season | Average high / low (INUMET, Carrasco) | Crowds and prices | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 26.0°C / 16.3°C | Building fast; New Year is the peak | Christmas and New Year on the coast |
| January | 27.3°C / 17.9°C | The busiest and most expensive month | Beach life at full volume |
| February | 26.7°C / 17.9°C | Still busy, easing later in the month | Summer with slightly more room |
| March | 25.2°C / 16.4°C | Far quieter, prices fall sharply | The best-value beach month |
| April to November | 14.5 to 23.2°C highs | Many seasonal businesses closed | Quiet walks, not a beach trip |
Rain is spread through the year at roughly 90 to 110 mm a month, so expect the odd wet day in any season. The coast is often windy, and evenings can feel cool even in January: pack a light layer.
New Year in Punta del Este
New Year’s Eve is the town’s biggest night. Demand for 2026/27 is up again: HomeToGo’s 2026 holiday report puts New Year’s Eve searches for Punta del Este up 87%, and Expedia’s travel trends report lists it up 65%. Last New Year, crowds filled Playa Mansa for fireworks and a drone show, according to Montevideo Portal; the 2027 programme had not been published on 29 October 2026.
The honest catch is the price. In a Booking.com check on 29 October 2026 for two adults, only 57 properties were still available for 30 December to 2 January, against 328 for 10 to 13 March 2027. Hotel San Marcos cost 687 euros for the New Year nights and 191 euros in March; Hotel La Vista 32 cost 776 euros against 194 euros. If New Year is the point of the trip, book now; if it is not, March gives you nearly the same weather for roughly a quarter of the price. Our where to go in December and where to go in January guides compare it with other warm-weather options.

25 x 18 x 4 cm, 254 g, 2.1 L. Locking zips, a cut-resistant double-cable strap, an RFID passport pocket and a strap that clips to a chair. Reader’s Digest’s best crossbody for travel.

A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The Península (old centre) | Walking to both beaches, the port and restaurants | Busiest and loudest in January |
| Playa Mansa side | Calm water, families, apartment towers with views | Long beachfront, so check the distance to the centre |
| Playa Brava side | Surf, La Mano, Atlantic views | Rougher sea for swimming |
| La Barra | A beach village just east of town | You need a bus, taxi or car for the centre |
| José Ignacio | A quiet, upmarket village roughly 40 km east | Expensive and far from everything else |
First time? Stay on the Península or near the start of Playa Mansa and you can do most of the trip on foot. For a beach-first stay outside the centre, look at La Barra; for a quiet splurge, José Ignacio.

How do you get to Punta del Este?
From Montevideo and Carrasco airport. Most international travellers land at Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo. COT’s Montevideo to Punta del Este buses stop at Carrasco airport about 25 minutes after leaving the city, and the whole trip takes about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes, depending on the service. The fare from Montevideo is 466 pesos, roughly US$12. COT’s timetable lists around 30 departures, though not every one runs daily. COPSA also connects Montevideo with Maldonado, the city next to Punta del Este.
By air to Laguna del Sauce. Punta del Este International Airport, on Route 93 at km 113 near Laguna del Sauce, has mostly seasonal flights. Its route map lists Buenos Aires (Aerolíneas Argentinas and GOL), São Paulo (GOL, Azul and Aerolíneas Argentinas), Porto Alegre, Córdoba and Asunción (Paranair), most of them summer-only.
From Buenos Aires. Take a Buquebus ferry to Colonia del Sacramento or Montevideo, then a COT bus along the coast; our Uruguay guide covers the crossing, and our Buenos Aires guide covers the Argentine side.
What should you not miss in Punta del Este?
| Sight | Cost (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| La Mano (Los Dedos), Playa Brava | Free | Mario Irarrázabal’s 1982 hand rising from the sand at Parada 1; go early to beat the crowds |
| Playa Mansa | Free | The calm, bay-side beach; best for swimming |
| Casapueblo, Punta Ballena | 600 pesos adults; under 12 free | Open daily 10:00 to sunset; arrive 40 minutes before the sunset Ceremonia al Sol |
| Isla de Lobos | Boat trip price varies | View only from the water: landing is prohibited |
| José Ignacio | Free | A lighthouse and a quiet beach village about 40 km east |
Casapueblo. The white, sculpted house and studio of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró on the cliffs of Punta Ballena, west of town, is now a museum, hotel and lookout. Every evening at sunset the museum holds the Ceremonia al Sol, a recording of the artist’s voice reading a poem as the sun goes down. Adults pay 600 pesos, residents and over-65s 500 pesos, and children under 12 go free.
Isla de Lobos. This rocky island 8.1 km off the coast became Uruguay’s first fully oceanic protected area in August 2024, as the Isla e Islote de Lobos National Park. It shelters South American fur seals and South American sea lions, and the decree prohibits landing for recreation or tourism, so boat trips from the port watch the colony from the water.
Playa Brava vs Playa Mansa. The two beaches sit back to back across the peninsula. Mansa faces the bay and is the calmer swimming beach; Brava takes the Atlantic swell and suits surfers and walkers. On either side, swim where lifeguards are on duty.
Food. Grilled fish and the chivito, Uruguay’s loaded steak sandwich, are the local staples; a café in the old centre makes an easy break between beaches.
Day trips from Punta del Este
- José Ignacio: roughly 40 km east, a small village with a lighthouse and a calmer beach scene.
- Piriápolis: an older, quieter resort on the bay to the west, on the same COT line from Montevideo.
- Montevideo: the capital’s Ciudad Vieja and riverside Rambla, around 2.5 hours by COT bus.
- Colonia del Sacramento: the UNESCO-listed old town is far to the west, so it fits better as a stop on the way to or from Buenos Aires than as a day trip.
What goes wrong in Punta del Este?
- Leaving New Year too late. By late October 2026 most rooms for the New Year nights were already gone, and the rest were priced accordingly.
- Expecting a winter beach. From April to November many seasonal restaurants and beach businesses close, and highs drop to 14 to 23°C.
- Underestimating the sea on Playa Brava. The Atlantic side has real surf; La Mano is a reminder, not a swimming spot.
- Planning to land on Isla de Lobos. Landing is prohibited; see it from a boat.
How many days do you need in Punta del Este?
Three to four days covers it: a day on the Península with both beaches and La Mano, an afternoon at Casapueblo for sunset, a boat trip toward Isla de Lobos, and a day in José Ignacio or La Barra. Add Montevideo for two days at the start or end of your trip.

Yes, if you book early and accept peak prices. Punta del Este is the classic New Year beach destination of the Río de la Plata, and New Year’s Eve searches were up 87% in HomeToGo’s 2026 holiday report. In a Booking.com check on 29 October 2026, only 57 properties were still available for 30 December to 2 January, and a mid-range hotel cost around 690 euros for those three nights against around 190 euros in mid-March.
What is the best time to visit Punta del Este?

Late December and January are the busiest and most expensive weeks; March is warm, quieter and much cheaper.
What is the difference between Playa Brava and Playa Mansa?
