Quick Answer

The best time to visit Uruguay is December to March, the southern summer, when INUMET’s 1991-2020 normals give Montevideo average highs of 26 to 28°C. Late December and January are the peak on the Atlantic coast, led by Punta del Este at New Year, so book early or come in March for the same warmth at lower prices: in a Booking.com check on 29 October 2026, the same three nights in Punta del Este cost roughly three to four times more over New Year than in mid-March. Most visitors combine Montevideo, the UNESCO-listed old town of Colonia del Sacramento (a Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires) and the beaches around Punta del Este. COT buses link them cheaply: Montevideo to Punta del Este takes about 2.5 hours for 466 pesos. Give the country five to seven days. Uruguay uses the peso, and travellers from the US, UK, EU and Japan need no visa.

Uruguay is small and easy to move around: a relaxed capital on the Río de la Plata, a 17th-century river town an hour by ferry from Buenos Aires, and a long Atlantic coast of beach towns. The real decisions are the month, how much of the summer peak you can live with, and whether you base yourself in Montevideo or on the coast. Every date and price below was checked on 29 October 2026.

Uruguay month by month

The seasons are reversed from Europe and North America: summer runs December to March and winter June to August. Rain is spread evenly through the year, at roughly 80 to 110 mm a month, so there is no dry season to wait for. The figures are INUMET’s 1991-2020 normals for Montevideo’s Prado station.

MonthAverage high / lowRainBest for
January27.8°C / 18.8°C95 mmPeak beach season; Punta del Este is at its busiest
February27.0°C / 18.6°C94 mmStill high summer, slightly quieter after mid-month
March25.3°C / 17.1°C106 mmWarm sea air, fewer crowds, lower coastal prices
April22.0°C / 14.1°C111 mmAutumn city breaks in Montevideo and Colonia
May18.5°C / 11.0°C83 mmMild, quiet, good for Colonia’s old town
June15.6°C / 8.2°C89 mmWinter; beach towns largely closed
July14.7°C / 7.3°C93 mmThe coldest month; museums and food markets
August16.7°C / 8.5°C90 mmLate winter, cheapest hotels
September17.9°C / 9.8°C92 mmSpring starts; mild sightseeing weather
October20.7°C / 12.4°C102 mmPleasant city weather, coast still quiet
November23.7°C / 14.7°C96 mmWarm days before the summer rush
December26.4°C / 17.1°C91 mmSummer begins; Christmas and New Year on the coast

The rest of the country is close to these numbers. Colonia averages a January high of 28.6°C and Rocha, on the eastern coast, 28.1°C, with cooler nights in Rocha (16.7°C). Winter is mild by European standards, with July highs around 15°C, but the coast empties out and many seasonal beach businesses close.

The best value compression set going. A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

Best time to visit Uruguay by trip type

Beach summer and New Year (December to February)

This is Uruguay’s big season. Argentines, Brazilians and Uruguayans fill the coast from Christmas through January, and Punta del Este is the centre of it, with its calm Playa Mansa on the bay side and the surf of Playa Brava on the Atlantic. New Year’s Eve is the single busiest night of the year there. If you want the coast in this window, book flights and rooms months ahead, and read our where to go in December and where to go in January guides for how Uruguay compares with other warm-weather options.

Late summer value (March)

March is the smart month for most visitors. Montevideo still averages 25.3°C, the sea air is warm, and coastal hotels drop sharply: in our Booking.com check, a mid-range Punta del Este hotel charging around 690 euros for three nights over New Year cost around 190 euros for three nights in mid-March.

City breaks (April to May, September to November)

Spring and autumn suit Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento, with highs of roughly 18 to 24°C. These are the months to walk Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja and the long riverside promenade (the Rambla) without summer heat.

Winter (June to August)

Highs around 15 to 17°C and lows near 7 to 8°C. Montevideo works fine as a city break, but most of the beach towns are shuttered, so this is not the season for the coast. If you are coming from the northern hemisphere for winter sun, aim for December to March instead.

Where to go in Uruguay

Montevideo. The capital on the Río de la Plata, where most long-haul flights land at Carrasco International Airport. Base yourself near the Ciudad Vieja (old town) for sights and the port, or in a riverside neighbourhood along the Rambla for beaches and evening walks.

Colonia del Sacramento. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680 on a short peninsula facing Buenos Aires, its Historic Quarter has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Most visitors arrive by Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires or by COT bus from Montevideo in about 2 hours 45 minutes.

Punta del Este. The famous beach town on a peninsula between the river mouth and the Atlantic, with La Mano sculpture on Playa Brava, Casapueblo at Punta Ballena and boat trips to see the sea lions off Isla de Lobos. Our Punta del Este guide covers areas, prices and the New Year crowds.

Piriápolis. A quieter resort on the bay west of Punta del Este, about 1 hour 35 minutes from Montevideo by COT bus for 334 pesos.

José Ignacio. A small, upmarket beach village with a lighthouse, roughly 40 km east of Punta del Este, popular as a calmer base in high summer.

How to get to and around Uruguay

By air. Carrasco International Airport serves Montevideo, and the airport lists COT, COPSA, CUTCSA and Turismar buses from the terminal (they are run by independent companies, not the airport). COT’s Montevideo to Punta del Este buses stop at Carrasco airport, so you can head straight to the coast after landing. Punta del Este’s own airport at Laguna del Sauce mainly has seasonal summer flights from Buenos Aires and Brazilian cities such as São Paulo.

By ferry from Buenos Aires. Buquebus sails from its terminal in Puerto Madero, close to central Buenos Aires, to Colonia del Sacramento, which it markets as about an hour away, and to its own terminal at the port in Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja. If you are combining both countries, our Buenos Aires guide and Argentina guide cover the other side of the river.

By bus. Intercity buses are the backbone of travel in Uruguay. COT’s timetable lists around 30 departures from Montevideo to Punta del Este (not all run daily), taking roughly 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes, and Montevideo to Colonia in about 2 hours 45 minutes. COPSA connects Montevideo with Maldonado and Canelones. Some services do not run on Sundays and public holidays, so check the timetable for your day, and book ahead for late December and January.

Entry requirements, money and connectivity

Entry. The Ministry of the Interior’s visa table lists no visa requirement for ordinary passports from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Japan, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Chinese and Indian passport holders need prior authorisation, although Chinese travellers with a valid US, Canadian, UK or EU visa can enter without one when they first arrive via Carrasco, Montevideo port, Colonia or Laguna del Sauce. Uruguay’s consulates give a tourist stay of 90 days, extendable once by the National Migration Directorate. Rules change, so check your nationality on the official table before you book.

Money. Uruguay uses the peso (UYU), at roughly 40 pesos to the US dollar in late October 2026. When a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choose pesos to avoid a poor conversion rate.

Mobile data. A travel eSIM is the easiest way to get data on arrival; compare plans in our best eSIM for travel guide, and check plugs in our travel adapters by country guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Uruguay?

December to March, the southern summer, is the best time for most trips. INUMET’s 1991-2020 normals give Montevideo (Prado station) average highs of 26.4°C in December, 27.8°C in January and 27.0°C in February. Late December and January are the peak on the east coast, so March brings the same warm weather with fewer crowds and much lower prices.

Is Uruguay worth visiting in December and January?

Yes, if you book early. It is high summer, with Montevideo averaging highs of 26 to 28°C, and Punta del Este is the region’s classic New Year beach destination. That demand shows in prices: in a Booking.com check on 29 October 2026, only 57 properties were still available in Punta del Este for 30 December to 2 January, against 328 for the same three nights in mid-March.

How do you get from Buenos Aires to Uruguay?

By ferry or by plane. Buquebus sails from its Puerto Madero terminal in Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, which it markets as about an hour away, and also to its terminal in Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja. Flights land at Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, and in summer at Punta del Este’s Laguna del Sauce airport.

Do I need a visa for Uruguay?

Not for most Western travellers. The Ministry of the Interior’s visa table lists no visa for ordinary passports from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Japan, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Uruguay’s consulates give a tourist stay of 90 days, extendable once by the National Migration Directorate. Check your own nationality before booking.

What currency does Uruguay use?

The Uruguayan peso (UYU), at roughly 40 pesos to the US dollar in late October 2026. For the 2026/2027 season, the Ministry of Tourism lists zero VAT on accommodation for non-resident visitors and a refund of 9 points of VAT on restaurants and car rental, so keep your passport handy when you check in and pay.

How do you get around Uruguay without a car?

By intercity bus. COT runs from Montevideo to Punta del Este in about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes for 466 pesos, stopping at Carrasco airport, and to Colonia del Sacramento in about 2 hours 45 minutes for 579 pesos. COPSA also connects Montevideo with Maldonado and Canelones.
